“Is he drinking?”
Trina nodded her head yes.
“So everything is going to plan then?”
“Yes,” Trina said “Everything is. I was worried that it would be different. He was different to me on the phone yesterday and downstairs today.”
“Different how?”
“He was...nice. I think he knows something is up. He looked at me like he knows something is off.”
“How can he possibly know anything? Don't stress yourself out. Don't worry. You have done your part. Now it is time for me to do mine. This will be all over soon.”
John and Trina watched television for thirty minutes. Waiting.
“I think it is time,” John said.
Trina gulped hard. “Good luck.”
John took out a piece of rope from a backpack. A long and thick strand, impossible to tear or break.
“This will be quick and easy,” John said as he exited the bedroom.
Trina waited at the door, listening.
She heard a slight scuffling of feet and a muffled cry of pain.
Then a loud thump.
And silence.
She waited and waited for about two minutes until she heard footsteps coming back up the steps.
Trina could not help but smile from ear to ear. She could not believe it could be this easy. Fially free from Roy, she could now be together with John. Forever.
She felt a tinge of guilt in celebrating the death of her husband but she could help it.
“Free!” she whispered to herself, walking back into the bedroom.
The door opened.
To Trina's surprise, Roy stood there. Covered in blood.
“Roy! Roy! What have you done?”
“What's wrong darlin'? Didn't expect to see me come up them steps, right? Expecting your little boyfriend instead?”
Trina screamed.
“Screaming don't help,” Roy said. “Figured you'd learn that by now. But I admit, you had a good plan. Not good enough to fool me, though. You want to know how I did it? I'll tell ya. I saw you talking to that man two weeks ago. I saw the way you looked at him, the way he looked at you. Do you think I'm stupid or something? I had my suspicions. But, I had to go on a job. So I left. Still, all the time I was there, I was wondering about you and him. So I came back early. A whole week early, actually. Was expecting to find you, by yourself, and say that the job changed and I had to come home, make up some excuse. But, I don't see you by yourself. What do I see instead? You and him, going in the forest, taking your clothes off and letting him have his way with you right there, out in the open like some common whore. I wanted to kill you both right there and then. I got closer- made sure I was real careful like, not to make a sound. I got closer, and I saw what he was. That pale skin, that bone structure, those eyes. Everything about him that you found so attractive. He is a vampire. How do I know? Let me tell you a story. Before I met you, before I started my life with you, I was a vampire slayer. My father was, and his father before him. We would go around together, hunting out these beasts, these monsters, and kill them. I got pretty good at it. The best in the business, actually. But then I met you. Didn't want to put you through that, too dangerous. Couldn't be putting my girl in any danger now, could I? So I gave it up, to drive trucks around the country. Worst thing I ever did. Then, I come home and you are sleeping with one of these monsters? I know that I can't just kill him outright, I have to make a plan. I watch you, I follow you. I listen to your conversations. I listen to how you are going to kill me and let him drink my blood. I could have gone in and finished him when you were at work, when he was asleep in our bed, in MY bed after sleeping with MY wife. But, where's the fun in that? You had gone to so much effort with your plan, put so much thought into it. I let you think your plan was going to work, but I knew he was coming. Thanks to you, I knew when, and I knew how. You wanted to strangle me and let him drink my blood. You know what I did to him? I put a steak, right through his heart. And I looked into his eyes as the life went out of him. Pretty eyes, eh? Shame you won't be seeing them again. Did you really think you could outsmart me? You will never get rid of me.”
Roy came as close to Trina as he could without touching her.
“It's you and me forever, darlin,” Roy said as he playfully bit into her neck.
