CHAPTER ONE

New York City

January

Today
is huge,

I
said to my best friend, Jennifer Kent, who sat behind me on the edge of my bed
while I flicked through the clothes in my closet.

Huge,
huge.

As
in bigger than huge.

I
would go so far as to say that today is the very definition of huge.

You
know, if I were to look up

huge

in
the dictionary right now?

There
would be a lovely, color photograph of me standing beside a calendar that was
turned to today

s
date.

That

s how huge today is.

It

s so huge, in fact,
that, naturally, I can

t
find anything to wear. Come on.

I
need your help.

Since
when?

You

re the fashionista.

Whose
mind is clogged with anxiety.

You
know exactly what to wear to a high-powered meeting at Wenn

I
don

t.

I write about zombies, for God

s sake.

If my zombie peeps show up in a suit, it

s in tatters.

And
you write about them quite successfully, I might add.

I turned to Jennifer, thinking that
she looked as pretty as ever.

Her
long, dark hair was flat-ironed, parted on the side, and hanging down her
back.

With the exception of her
lips, which were painted deep red, she wore only a hint of makeup.

This morning, she

d chosen a chic black
suit to wear to her job at Wenn Enterprises, where she was a consultant to Wenn

s CEO, Alexander Wenn,
who also happened to be her fianc
é
.

It

s ironic, isn

t it?

I
said.

Who knew that writing
about the undead would add some meat to my wallet?

God bless the U.S.A.!

Lisa
Ward

three-time
best-selling self-published novelist goes traditional.

It

s kind of ridiculous,
isn

t
it?

From an indie to going with a
traditional publisher in less than a year.

I still can

t
believe it.

Hell, I still can

t believe I

m about to earn a
five-million-dollar advance.

Jennifer shrugged at me.

I

m
not surprised.

You

ve been writing since
we were kids.

You worked your ass
off this past year, and you succeeded on your own.

Each of your books hit the bestseller
list, and now others want to be part of your success.

You

ve become your dream.

It happens.

You
can still pinch me.

I

ll leave that to Tank.

Tank,

I
said.

My lovely boyfriend,
now officially, for two whole weeks.

Why
not wear red?

Jennifer
said.

Tank loves you in red,
and for good reason.

Red suits your
complexion and your blonde hair.

What did he think you should wear today?

He
didn

t
give his opinion.

That

s because you still
haven

t
told him what

s
happening today.

That

s not true.

He
knows you

re
about to sign a five-million-dollar contract with Wenn Publishing?

He
knows I

m
about to sign a contract.

But
he doesn

t
know about the amount?

Why
should he?

Because
this is a major life event.

It

s something to
celebrate and share with your boyfriend.

Says
who?

Tank and I have never
discussed money.

I have no idea
what he makes.

He has no idea what
I make.

Lately, all he wants to
know is whether this pleased me, or whether that pleased me.

If I liked his tongue over here, or over
there.

Or if he was too hard on my
—”

Got
it.

Well,
it

s
true.

Do
you think you

ll
tell him the amount?

Why
is that important?

Oh,
I don

t
know.

Her eyes popped.

Because it

s a
big deal!

I
haven

t
really thought of it.

Oh
please.

Well,
maybe I have.

So,
what

s
holding you back?

It

s a lot of money.

I don

t know how he

s going to react to it.

He
should be proud of you.

And the
Tank I know
will
be proud of you.

She
cocked her head at me.

Let me ask you a
question.

How would you feel if
Tank was going to earn that kind of money?
