Chapter Twenty-Six

When Emma got home, she turned on the bath water and walked around looking for books to read while she was in the Jacuzzi tub. Coming up with nothing, she got her E-Reader and looked at “Mommy to be” books. Sitting on the side of the tub, waiting until it filled up, Emma read a couple parts of the books. Tearing up, she realized how beautiful the process of building a life inside of her would be, regardless of if she would do it alone or not.

She had enough funds to handle the baby on her own because of investments and she was actually a partner in the mediation firm as well. But there was nothing that compared to having the love of a man next to her to help her through this process. Emma sighed at the loneliness that crept up over her.

When the water filled up, Emma sank into the warmth of the water and put the jets on low, another rule she learned about in the pamphlets. Closing her eyes and allowing the feeling to consume her, Emma began to tear up. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones that made her so emotional lately, but she teared up because she knew that she was going to become a mother. A position that she never thought she’d be worthy of after all she’d been through in her life. A position that she thought she would never make it to. She was scared shitless to say the least. But she prayed while she was in the bathtub for guidance.

She placed a hand on her stomach and smiled tears of joy for the first time since she’d found out about her pregnancy. Her child. Her baby. Her choice. She chose to keep this baby, not because it was the right thing to do. She chose to keep this baby because she finally had a chance at giving someone else life, and loving someone like she’d wished she’d been loved all of her life. With no family around, just her friends, Emma knew what it was like to desire a family. Placing a kiss to her hands and placing it towards her child in her abdomen, she whispered a vow to her unborn child. “I promise, Mommy won’t leave you until God takes me home. It’s you and me against the world my love.” Leaning her head back and humming a lullaby she repeated, “It’s us against the world.”

Emma went to sleep with such joy that night. Embracing motherhood and taking it a day at a time was all she could do. Being a single parent would be fine, and she had to make no explanation about who the father was either. She wouldn’t even give the amount of weeks she was along until she felt like she was showing. Emma couldn’t help but smile at the idea.

Zack woke up the next morning anticipating his visit to Emma’s office. This was so crazy! He’d finally get to see her again and visually see that she was real. Seeing her outside of Hawaii would be different but he anticipated it regardless.

When he arrived at her office, he told his driver to standby because he wasn’t sure what time he’d be out. Walking through the doors and taking the elevator to her office, Zack looked around at how elegant the waiting room was. The beautiful colors of crème and black made the room pop yet made you not want to ruin anything you sat on or touched. He walked toward the desk that held the nametag of Samantha and she looked up at him with curious, almost flirtatious, eyes.

“Good morning Sir, how may I help you?” Samantha asked politely.

“Hi, I’m Mr. More. I’m here for my appointment with Emma.”

The gleam in Samantha’s eyes dulled a little but she still kept up a smile that made him curious to just how much she really loved Kevin.

“Oh yes, good timing. Please fill out this paperwork and Miss Sanget will be out with you shortly.”

“Thank you.”

Zack filled out the paperwork and handed it back to Samantha within a few minutes. He sat back down and looked at the clock on the wall awaiting the time until he’d be face to face with Emma again. He couldn’t wait. Before he knew it Samantha said, “Miss Sanget will see you now. Her office is behind me.”

Zack nodded and walked over to Emma’s door. He knocked on it.

More? Wasn’t Zack’s last name More? Gregory? Zack never mentioned a Gregory. This is just stupid. There was no way. I’m just being foolish. You’re being paranoid Emma, stop it!
She said to herself. When she heard the knock on the door, she put on her best business smile and said, “Come in.”

When the door opened, her eyes met with the man who fathered her unborn child.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

The same heat and sexual tension that they had felt before never left. Zack closed the door and seductively said, “Good afternoon Emma.”

Emma sputtered for words but lost the chance to speak when Zack came around the table as she rose to find words to say and he kissed her. He kissed her with the lips that she’d been craving and missing since she hadn’t seen him over five weeks ago. Emma had somehow lost her mind and had forgotten that she was in her office because she wrapped her arms around Zack at the feel of his body once again.

It didn’t matter that this man was a stranger in her life, but he was no stranger to her body and soul. She needed to feel him again. Oh how she missed him. When he began to lift up her skirt Emma held no type of resistance. The pencil skirt rose and he laid her down on her desk, glad that there was only one paper on it and her computer.

“The door, lock the door” Emma urged against his lips.

Emma stopped Zack before he got to the door and remembered she forgot to shave her legs that day! Shit! She hadn’t expected to be getting any for a long time. “Umm, wait Zack, I--” Emma thought quickly, “I have to use the bathroom really quick and freshen up. Stay here.”

“I don’t care what you look like Emma, I want you right now” Zack said through his heated gaze.

Licking her lips at the delicious sight of him Emma almost chose to allow him to feel her porcupine legs but replayed the image in her head and decided against it. She licked his lips and giggled as she ran away from his quick grasp. She took up her pocket book that held her extra razors and did a quick cleanup of herself in the bathroom.

Taking no more time than necessary, Emma sped back to her office. She walked slowly passed the open doors with her colleagues inside and went into a sprint every moment she got. She needed to feel Zack. Now!

As soon as he got back to her office, Emma nodded at Samantha, and closed her door.

Before Emma could think, Zack grabbed Emma and locked the door. He pushed Emma back down onto her desk and sucked her lips. Kissing her neck and pulling her hair out of the bun she kept it in. Feeling the smoothness of her legs drove him wild. “
Thank heavens for my Venus razors
!” Emma thought in her head as she began to lose herself in Zack’s caresses. She couldn’t take it anymore. She pulled down the pants he wore and without thinking, he plunged into Emma as her legs wrapped around him.

Trying to muffle her moans, Zack placed his hand over Emma’s mouth as he pounded into her. Not being able to resist, Zack made a noise wanting to say her name and Emma’s hand went over his mouth as well. She milked his body with her core, feeling everything that she missed for over a month. They came, shaking in each other’s arms and smiling mischievously at one another because of what they’d just done. But just as soon as he’d seen the smile in Emma’s eyes, it was gone.

Emma looked at Zack and then looked away. “Zack, we umm…we have to talk.”

Zack looked at Emma with concern and wondered what could be bothering her. Slapping his forehead “Oh shit, we didn’t use a condom. I’m so sorry. We’ll get the morning after pill.” Grabbing some paper towels from on top of the cabinet in her office, Zack wiped him and Emma up.

“It’s a little late for that” she mumbled to herself inaudibly.

“What’d you say?” Zack asked.

“Nothing. Can you meet me at my place later or would you like to talk over dinner?”

“I think I want to be at your place. We’d be more comfortable.”

“That’s fine. Here’s my address, and come over at around eight. I’ll order pizza if you want.”

Zack laughed, “Pizza is fine. Now, is it good or bad? You have me a little worried.”

Emma smiled gently and shrugged, “Depends. I’ll see you at seven.” With that, Zack placed a kiss on Emma’s lips before he left the room. Sheesh! Her office smelled like sex. She sprayed Febreze around the room and laughed to herself. “Let’s see how it goes tonight.” Emma sighed at the thought of seeing Zack again. She didn’t know if she could get enough of that man. But reality hit her immediately after that she might just have to if he didn’t want the baby that they’d created together.

When the doorbell rang at seven on the dot, Emma walked over to the door feeling nauseous as ever. She didn’t know how he’d take the news, but she did know that he was the father of her child and regardless she was keeping this baby. She inhaled and then exhaled as she opened the door. She wore yoga pants and a fitted t-shirt. She barely showed so she knew he wouldn’t exactly see a difference.

The pizza had just gotten there minutes before he arrived and she took out plates to set the table and some wine and sparkling grape juice. She placed the wine on Zack’s side and the sparkling grape juice on hers. Zack stood at the door, looking as delicious as ever. She almost forgot she was hungry. He kissed her on the lips. “Good evening Emma.”

“Stop saying my name like that. I don’t know what to do with myself when you do.”

Zack chuckled and hugged her. “I missed you Em.”

“I missed you too Zack”, she sighed into his hug. Her stomach growled and she remembered she was eating for two. “But I’m also starving so let’s eat!”

Zack smiled at her rush to eat, and walked over to the table. He looked around at her condo and smiled. “You have a really nice place here. I didn’t think you’d live in Jersey too.”

“Too? You live in New Jersey?”

“Yup. I live in Essex County. About twenty minutes from here.”

“Wow, that’s crazy. Who knew we lived so close to each other?” Emma said to herself.

They both sat down and began to talk about how it’d been going since they’d last seen each other. Catching up was the easy part, but in the back of Emma’s mind she knew that she’d have to be honest with him.

Zack looked over as he realized that Emma drank a different drink than him. “Sparkling grape juice? Why no wine? You don’t like this brand? I think it’s excellent.” Zack peered down at the bottle in his hand as he poured more into his glass.

“No, that’s my favorite brand actually. I just can’t drink anymore.”

“You can’t drink anymore? Were you an alcoholic?” Zack looked questionably at Emma.

“No, it’s not that.” Emma nibbled on the bottom of her lip.

“Then what is it Emma?”

Emma looked down at her fingers and her plate.

“Talk to me Emma. Why can’t you drink anymore? Are you alright?”

“I’m pregnant Zack.”

Everything in the room began to spin as Zack asked Emma to repeat what she had just said.

“You heard me. I’m pregnant Zachary More. And it’s yours.”

“How do you know? Are you sure?” Zack felt his test tighten and he felt light headed. He was glad he was already sitting down because he felt like he would’ve passed out if he was standing up.

Emma nodded. “Yes you jerk, I’m sure. I’m five and a half weeks pregnant and you are the only person I had sex with that day. So don’t give me any BS about who I sleep with. You can even count the days yourself. I’ll even show you the blood work from the doctors.”

Zack nodded and started inhaling deeply. A baby? She was having his kid? What would he do with a child right now? His father was going to kill him. Actually, his father might not kill him because his parents always wanted grandchildren and worried that Zack would never have any at the rate he was going.

Emma took Zack’s silence as an opportunity to speak. “Look Zack, I’m keeping this baby. Whether you want to be in the child’s life is up to you. You don’t have to. I’m fine with doing this alone. And eventually I was going to tell you but I didn’t get around to calling you or anything. But this is your chance to tell me whether or not you want to be there. If you don’t, fine. If you do, even better. But there’s no going back on your decision.”

Zack excused himself to take a moment in her bathroom. He felt like he was barely moving until he got to the bathroom and closed the door. He splashed cold water on his face, looked at himself in the mirror, and slapped himself in the face a couple of times.
This is real life Zack. She’s pregnant. You have to do the right thing! Go on dates. Get to know her. See if what you felt for her was real. You came back to find her for a reason. Maybe this wasn’t the only reason. Maybe this could be the right woman for you. Take a chance. You are good enough. You said you were ready to try. So man up and try.

Zack spoke to himself in the mirror and knew what he had to do. Before he even knew Emma was pregnant he wanted to try and date her. But there was only one condition this time. Zack opened the door to let Emma know what that condition was.

Emma cleaned up the table as she waited for Zack to come out of the bathroom. She’d appreciated that he hadn’t just left and said he didn’t want to be a part of this journey with her. But instead he was realistic and took time out to think things through. When the bathroom door opened, Emma’s hands shook at the fate that awaited her. Would she be a single parent after all?

Zack walked out to Emma and saw that she was scared. He could always read her and he knew that when she spoke, she put on a brave façade, but he also knew that this time she was afraid. Afraid of what his answer might be. Without wanting to keep her waiting, he spoke to her gently. “Sit Emma. Let’s talk.” Emma nodded and placed the dish down in the sink. She walked over to the couch and sat down next to Zack.

“Em, I don’t want you to think I don’t want this baby. If you want this baby, then so do I. But we’re going to have to do this the right way from here on out. No more sex until we know that the chemistry we have is real. So for three months, we’re going to try and not have sex. It’s going to be hard as hell, but if we want to see if we actually have a chance to be a family for this baby than that’s what we’ll have to do. “

Emma stared at Zack and began to cry. “Emma? I’m sorry. Did I upset you? I thought this would be a good thing. Shit.”

Emma smiled and shook her head as she looked up at him. “No Zack, this is a great thing. Thank you. I was so scared to do it alone, but I’m so happy you’re here now.”

Zack smiled and kissed Emma.

“Wait, before we do this abstinence thing, you have to let me enjoy you completely tonight.” Emma said with a seductive wink and licked her lips.
