She flipped up the green stone and pointing to the wall pressed the button.  “Damn, I’d forgotten, Olaf wrecked it but see, the mechanism is still there”.  She held out her arm and Herger looked at the crushed micro circuits and gasped.  Then she smiled and lifted the blue button and touched the communicator underneath, increasing the volume to full.  “I’d almost forgotten about this” she said “are you there Father?”

Suddenly Jake’s voice filled the room, the sound of the men’s voices in the background.  “Alodie, what is it?  This is very inconvenient.  We’re at the castle and I’m just about to eat a huge meal.  The men are going to think I’m crazy, talking into my bracelet.”

“I’ve had  to tell Herger who and what we are, say something to him”

Alodie held up her arm.  Herger backed away, his face a mask of fear.  “Sorcery” he whispered.

“No, not sorcery young man, science” crackled Jake.  “Where Alodie and  I are from this is an every day commonplace.  Your men vanquished Olaf’s by the way, in case you’re interested, and Emma was turned over to the villagers for punishment – I dread to think what’s going to happen to her.  Anyway, are you looking after my little girl?”

Herger nodded.  “Y – yes” he whispered.

“Good, you had better be Viking!  Look, I’ll have to go, that red headed bear Bjarnie is heading this way carrying what looks like half a cow on a plate.  We’re boarding the ship after we’ve eaten and will probably arrive at Seinshaven about dawn tomorrow according to the lads. I’m too old for this! I’ll see you soon”.

With that, the bracelet went silent.  Alodie flicked down the stone and smiled.  Herger swallowed and gestured to the bracelet.  “So all the time I was wearing that thing, all the time I had it on I could have spoken to you just by pressing that button?”

Alodie smiled and nodded.  “We call the medical part of it ‘autodoc’, it’s the cream of twenty fifth century medical expertise.  Now do you know how you recovered from your wounds so quickly?”.

Herger shrugged.  “I thought it was magic and a strong body”

Alodie rubbed her nose, it had begun to tickle.  “So you prefer to believe in magic rather than science?” she asked.

He shrugged again.  “I do not know what to believe Alodie, this story is all so fantastic”

“Olaf believed in it Herger” she said “does that explain his ‘powers’ now?”

Herger nodded, turned to her and picking up a tress of her hair brought it to his lips.  “Did he hurt you, there on the island?”

Alodie got out of bed and walking over to the fire, warmed her hands.  The light shone through her nightrail highlighting her curves.  Herger felt himself begin to go hard.  She turned.  “not physically, I switched myself off from that, but up here, mentally, I felt – filthy.  Rape is a very, very horrible thing.  After I killed him I went into the sea and scrubbed myself clean for ages”

Herger clenched his fist and gritted his teeth. “What if you are with child by him?”

Alodie shook her head.  “There is no chance of that, thank goodness, I had my moon time whilst I was in that cell.  Very nasty it was too, that’s the second time I have had a moon time in a cell – yeuch!”

Herger smiled and climbing off the bed shrugged off his jerkin then unfastened his braeis  and stepped out of them.  Clad in a tiny loin cloth which accentuated rather than hid his bulging manhood, he beckoned to Alodie.  “Come here, wench” he growled “navigate this”

Alodie grinned, impishly “I am used to navigating billions – trillions of miles, not mere inches” she giggled – then shrieked as Herger sprung over the bed and landed in front of her.  “How do you do that? It’s very impressive” she asked airily as she backed up against the wall with him following her, step for step.

“I keep myself fit” he replied, clenching his great ham-like fists, “I lift things – logs, anvils, nightrails”

Alodie moaned as he pushed himself against her. She could feel every hot, throbbing inch of him.  He buried his hand in her hair, pulled her head toward him and kissed her deeply, plunging his tongue into her mouth, tasting the sweetness there.  Alodie could taste the mint in his mouth.  She was lucky to love a hygienic man in a very unhygienic age.  She answered him by burying her own hands in his thick dark hair and pulling his head back, gently nibbling his lips, his nose, his eyes, his chin.  “So you can still love me Herger,  even after you know the truth, and about Olaf?”

“Still love you?  Woman, you are unmatched on the planet.  I knew you were special but not how special, besides” he lifted her in his arms and walking over to the bed, dropped her on it then began to unfasten her nightrail, kissing her body as it appeared to his gaze.  “I have never made love to a captain before, or rather I had and did not know it”

Alodie groaned again as he kissed her gently on the throat then, running his fingers down the side of her body cupped her breasts and pushing them together began to lick first one, then the other nipple into a state of burgeoning readiness.

She could feel his throbbing manhood against her thigh and leaning down, began to rub his length, through the cloth, very gently with the tips of her fingers.  Then, slowly and with infinite care, she lowered her head and began to worry at the cloth with her teeth.  Herger arched his back and groaned.  After a few seconds she had made a small hole in the material and she began, with feather like darts of her tongue, to lick the end of his staff.  Herger groaned again, Alodie’s answer was to take a little more of his manhood into her mouth and tease it with her tongue.  What happened next surprised them both.  With a rip the thin material tore and his manhood stood free and unencumbered.

“You little..................” laughed Herger and pushing Alodie onto her back he began to run his tongue down the length of her honey gold body – opening the moist petals of her womanhood and running his tongue round her salty folds. Alodie sighed and arching her back, thrust herself nearer to the source of her pleasure.  Herger raised his head, grinned at her and began to lick her further into a state of sexual frenzy.

“Oh my God Herger, I can’t stand.......please!” she gasped.

Herger did not need to be asked twice.  Throwing aside the remnants of his loin cloth he pulled her closer to him and slid his length inside her.  Alodie wrapped her legs round his waist and moved strongly with him.  They had a perfect sexual understanding, both of them knowing instinctively what the other needed and, unasked, supplying that need.  She felt that a great weight had been lifted from her mind.  Herger knew all about her and still wanted her.  He knew Olaf and Alfred’s men had raped her and it did not make him hate her body as she had feared it would.

As Herger moved strongly inside her, he hoped and prayed that this lovemaking would result in another child.  Surely a child born of this particular mating would be strong and perfect.  He could never have thought that sex with Alodie could get any better but he had found out it could.  As far as he was concerned it was part awe at his discovery of who she was and part relief at getting her back safely, and she needed to know she was still loved, it was his job to prove to her she was.

Alodie began to thrash under him in a huge orgasm, sweat springing from her brow as she clasped and unclasped his huge upper arms.

He also felt that familiar rush in his loins and, as he spilled his seed in three tremendous gouts, he collapsed, sated, on top of her.

There was silence for a few moments, apart from the crackle and pop of the logs on the fire, then Herger looked up.  “Well, star maiden” he quipped.  “You excelled yourself that time!”

Alodie grinned and rubbed his cheekbone with her index finger.  “I love you Viking, just remember that”

“and you have no feelings left for Edric?”

Alodie shook her head.  “I never really did have any feelings for Edric.  I liked him and he loved me”

Herger wanted to ask her, in this truthful mood, whether she had given herself to Edric again after she had left him that time in
Wessex
but he held his tongue.  What was past was past and they had their whole lives together.

“Move up woman” he whispered gently. “I haven’t slept for days”.

*************************

Alodie woke with the dawn and climbing out of bed went to open the shutters.  The pearly light was filtering over the steep sides of the fjord and where it touched it turned the vista into a pink shimmering nimbus.  Alodie felt a lump in her throat.  The Earth was beautiful, indescribably so.  No one in the plexi-glassed twenty fifth century could ever begin to imagine anything so wonderful as the dawn, here, now, in the ninth.

As if on cue birds began their morning warble and, to Alodie’s delight, she heard the splash and grate of a ship grounding on the shingle of the landing and Bjarnie’s voice shouting orders.  Soon she would see her father again and her children and Anstice and little Alodie, the whole microcosm of her world was here, now, but for the moment she was alone, alone with the dawn and everything to look forward to.

There was no way of knowing yet, of course, but she had a gut feeling she was pregnant again, the intensity of feeling she and Herger had encountered during their lovemaking last night had created another person.

Herger – her husband.  Turning, she walked back to the bed.  The dawn light was playing on his raven dark hair, bringing out tints of gold.  She ran her finger lightly down his chin, he needed a shave, or maybe with winter coming along he would grow a beard.  She did not know, there were all sorts of things about this marvellous man she did not know and had a lifetime to find out.  They were born fifteen hundred years apart but were fated to be together, all she was and all she wanted to be were summed up in her feelings for this one man, this Viking pirate, this – barbarian.

She glanced at her bracelet – at the communicator button.  Just suppose the Dolwayans homed in on her signal and took her back, back to the time of plexi glass covered cities, hot showers, coffee, stable temperatures.  Back to the time when she was someone in her own right, back to the time when she was Captain Austen, not someone’s wife.  If they contacted her, what would she do?

Smiling, she crossed over to the table, picked up a bone hairpin and ever so gently, ever so gingerly
,
disabled the homing device on her communicator.
