Water Lily in July (14 page)

Rob looked at the photo. “That cavern I was in. There were boxes, a candle, it looked as if someone could have lived there.”

Kaylie glanced at him. “But surely they could have gotten out the way you did, through that hatch. I guess we'll never know, but the journal might give us some idea.”

“When do you go home?” Crispin asked.

“Tomorrow. Well…I don't actually have a home to go to. Neither of us do right now.”

Rob took her hand. “Darren will be here in the morning to pick us up. Tori said we can stay with them for now. If you want to?”

“I do.” She gripped his hand tightly, looking into his eyes.

He held her gaze. “You do?”

“Yes.”

Crispin got up and left quietly, shutting the door behind him.

“How would you feel about a really short courtship?” Rob asked. “Because I don't want to lose you again.”

“Sounds good to me.”

“We could move inland and grow water lilies. I could take Darren up on his job offer and be a systems analyst for his company.”

Kaylie held his gaze. “True. Or we could live on the coast and sell fish and grow water lilies. Only no going out to sea for days on end. I don't fancy getting Rob withdrawal symptoms.”

He tilted his head. “What about the lighthouse?”

Kaylie moved her face to within inches of him. “I think being married to a fisherman is enough adventure for me.”

“Deal.” He moved closer, captured her lips right along with her heart and kissed her.
