You Called Me-ARE and Apple epub (25 page)

An hour later she sat curled up on her sofa resting her head on her mother's lap. Kenya never told her mother of the threat on her father's life. They would go to the police and Brian could have the entire precinct in his pocket. Precinct, Jonathan held a close relationship with the police. It made sense why they spoke so highly of him when she questioned them down at the station before the trip to the woods. What family had she truly gotten involved with?

Her aunt disinfected her kitchen as she tried to tell them what happened and a garbled voice no one understood came out of her mouth.

“Baby, you did the right thing,” her mother said. “It'll hurt for a while, but if you know staying in his life puts him in danger, what other choice did you have?”

“I know, Momma, but this won't stop his father from going after him when another woman enters his life. I just hate that it's happening at all. He could be saying all this because I'm black and nothing to do with the estate.”

“You had another choice, Kenya. Don't go flying sideways, just listen. If there was a chance you two were moving toward marriage would you have stayed? Think about it. You're not the casual guy type any way and Jonathan, according to you, wanted you to go to Ireland with him. That screams meet the family...marriage...you and him.” Her aunt laid it out in vivid colors. Were they moving toward marriage and Brian's threats scared her prematurely?

That had her sitting up, brushing hair off her face. Pulling a tissue from the box on the table she wiped her tears and thought about her aunt and mother's words and what she felt for Jonathan. She liked his drive and determination. His unrelenting unselfish deeds for the kids screamed
Man of the Year
. Of course, she wanted Jonathan, but it was too late and dangerous for her family as well. Brian could have her apartment watched as she lay there waiting for her to go warn Jonathan. Was leaving him the right choice? Was she ready for marriage? Did she want to marry Jonathan? She'd never trick him into anything.

“I want him safe. You never saw him around the kids, he's amazing.”

“But I've seen him around you and Jonathan Blakemore wanted more than a passing relationship with you, Kenya.”

Her aunt leaned over the counter. “I know we joke a lot, Kenya, me and you, but seriously.” Her aunt paused, sighed deep in her chest. “Baby...Jonathan Blakemore rescheduled going home to be there for your night out. Think about it before you throw him away. Give him a chance to tell you if his father’s mentality is even stable.”

Kenya wanted him to tell her it was a wicked joke. She'd accept that, over Brian being truly that cruel of a father.

“Right now I can't think about Jonathan, I'm out of tears.” Shakily, she stood peering out the window then back at her mother. “Momma, you two should get back home before the roads ice over. If the temperature drops, it'll be dangerous out there. Daddy'll be worried and so will I.”

“You're right, honey,” her mother started fluffing the pillows on the sofa. “How's work going with the new position?”

Kenya eyed her new Kate Spade tote. It was her one indulgence for the promotion. She'd bought that with the gift card Jonathan gave her. Feeling a bit lonely, she slid her hands into her front pockets and answered her mother. “I love it. This has the potential to lead to more traveling to meet clients in other countries so it's an amazing opportunity and career move.” She squeezed her shoulders together gave her back a good stretch. Her life had changed by the hour, since meeting Jonathan and now he was no longer a part of it. She'd had someone to love. A man that didn’t smother her. He respected her career came first and didn't pressure her for anything. Kenya smiled and it held all the humor of a root canal. Giving him up, ripped at her heart. Unfair.

Knock knock!

She flinched. Smoothing down her rumpled top then wiping the dried tears from her face, she stepped around the coffee table. Swallowing thickly, Kenya braced in case Jonathan stood on the other side of that door. Her aunt shot her a look then pressed her face to the peephole.

“I’m not up for company…”Kenya moaned rubbing her stomach under her tank.

Her aunt shook her head and stepped away from the door pulling it open.

The moment worsened.

Morgan bounced on her heels beneath the threshold…smiling...and then grinning.

What on earth could she be smiling about? Kenya’s heart was breaking and here Morgan pranced like she’d won the lottery. She didn’t need this, not today, any day but today.

“Not today, Morgan.” Tension rode her body as she rested along the counter, squeezing the bridge of her nose between her thumb and fore finger. She’d broken up with a man to save his life. Wasn’t her sister supposed be there for comfort?

“Kenya, it’s best you ended whatever you thought you had with that man,” Morgan said, a selfish tone spread around the room. Kenya straightened her body tucking, her arms beneath her breast. This was the only way she’d keep from hitting her sister.

“What are you talking about? You know nothing of my relationship with Jonathan nor the man. Just stay out of it, Morgan.”

Morgan pulled a crumpled newspaper from her bag. Spreading it out over the counter as if she’d just slapped her with a pair of dueling gloves. Kenya ran her finger over the article…the words fed acid to her joints…her stomach dropped. This can’t be true.

She shot a glare on her sister. “Get out of my house. You don’t know him.”

Morgan held up a hand fingers folded back as if she held a gun and tilted her head. She said with a evil smirk, “I know he’s a murderer…and so does the police,” and squeezed the fake trigger. The barstool spun around...after Kenya fainted.
