He slammed the wheel as he hit a light. He
had to get there. Even though the nurse claimed she was stable, a
part of him feared that some higher power would intervene and rip
Jess away before he could talk to her.

He wanted to tell her that while their sex
was the best he'd had and when he was inside her, it was the
closest to heaven he'd been, she meant so much more to him than a
good lay. He wanted to tell her that he pressed her about school
because she had so much potential. He wanted to tell her that she
made him excited for the future--for a future where they might
become more than a forbidden tryst. Together, he'd tell her, they
might start over and create something new.

His Lexus careened into the ER parking lot
and with sharp, decisive moves, he parked and pushed out of the
car. 5am runs before work paid off--he made it to the reception
desk in less than five seconds without even breathing.

"Jessica Capshaw," he barked at a bleary eyed
nurse. "I'm her fa-stepfather. Where is she?"

Everything was a blur as he moved through the
double doors.

E86, he thought to himself, scanning the mass
produced cubicles. E86.

When he arrived at the right curtain, he
threw it back...and his heart stopped.

The first thing he saw was her eyes. Her
beautiful, round blue eyes. In the yellow light of the hospital,
they looked more washed out and gray. They were swollen and red
from crying, dozens of balls of tissue peppering her blanket.

Next, he saw a purpling bruise on her caramel
cheek. He breezed to her side and brushed her cheek. "Oh, Jessica.
What happened?"

She turned her face away. "You shouldn't have
come. I'm fine."

"Don't be silly," Davis said, pulling a chair
to her side. "I'm your emergency contact. And I care about
you."

"Right," she said sarcastically. "That's why
your dick spends more time in my pussy than anything else?"

Davis glanced around, like he was worried her
voice would carry and some morality police would arrest him for
what he'd done.

He leaned in, his voice lowered. "I've just
been caught up in all of this, Jess. It's fresh and new-"

"And once you get bored or I get old, you'll
trade me in for a younger model?"

His mouth fell open like she slapped him
across the face. "Where is this coming from? A few hours ago we
were fine. You were going to the library. Everything was fine."

Jess let out a snort, finally turning back to
Davis. "Yeah. I was going to the library and the first thing out of
your mouth was 'you wanna fuck in the stacks?'"

Davis' face was warm with shame. She spoke
the truth. Hell, he'd gone home and jerked off, thinking about
bending her over a book cart.

He reached out and grasped her hand. "I know
my actions say otherwise, but it's really important to me that you
know that you're more than just a piece of ass."

The look of pure disdain on Jess' face made
his words catch in his throat.

"What AM I to you?" Jess asked with a snarl.
"I'm eighteen, Davis. You're forty-one. You've lived. I
haven't."

Davis furrowed his brow. "What are you
saying? I WANT you to live. I just want an opportunity to be a part
of your life."

Jess let out a bitter chuckle that made
Davis' blood run cold. He'd worried that his revelation wouldn't go
over well, but this was something else. He could feel it.

"What aren't you telling me, Jess?" Davis
asked firmly.

"What do you care?" she said savagely. A
familiar look spread across her face, but it was laced with poison.
"I know what you want." She flipped back her covers and started to
undo her gown.

Davis lurched forward. "What the hell, Jess!"
He tied her strings back, shaking his head. "I can't help you if
you don't tell me what's wrong."

She jutted out her lip, but whatever she was
keeping hidden overwhelmed her and she started sobbing.

Davis scooped her in his arms, the feel of
her strong body now frail and broken eliciting some tears of his
own. "Please tell me what's wrong."

"It was supposed to just be fun," she said
through hiccups. "Then I started falling for you."

Davis swiped his face as his heart skipped a
beat. "Really, baby? I'm falling for you too and-"

She pulled away, wiping her eyes with a
snotty tissue. "Don't, Davis. Please don't make this any harder."
She sniffed, then glanced down at the bed, fumbling with her
blanket. "You really want to know?"

"Yes," Davis said adamantly. "I want to
know."

Jess's sharp intake of air sucked all the
oxygen from the room as Davis prepared himself for what came next.
If he would have known what words were due to fall from her lips,
he would have amended his sentence. He wouldn't have wanted to
know. Reality changed everything.

"I almost had a miscarriage tonight," Jess
said finally, her big, blue eyes boring into his. "You got me
pregnant."
