She opened her eyes, her brows furrowed in confusion, “What-“ she started, but the sight of what looked like a needle in wedged in between his fingers stopped her in her tracks. Her heart stopped as he raised his hand just above her neck. “Wait, stop!” she hissed breathlessly, but she had barely gotten that last word out before he depressed the syringe into her neck. Her jaw swung open as the severe ache, her toes curling and her hands clutching him even harder, digging into his perfect skin. Before she knew it, her eyelids were becoming far too heavy to keep open, and her knees were going weak. With a sigh, she collapsed, her hands losing her grip, her mind losing consciousness.
Chapter Five
Janette’s eyelids flipped open. She was lying down, but could see nothing above her but a glass window. She sucked in a deep breath. The air felt harsh and artificial. It burned at the inside of her trachea and lungs and left a stain on the glass above her. She lifted her arm, wincing at the subsequent thump and shot of pain. One short glance to her right and to her left told her that she was enclosed in what seemed to be a glass pod. She wriggled her left arm to raise it, this time, being careful not to hit it against the walls of her pod again, and pressed it against the glass on top of her. She pushed against it, taking in shallow breaths to try to ease the pain, but it wouldn’t budge. Something about being in that tiny space planted a seed of anxiety in the back of her mind, which, once she had acknowledged, she could not ignore. She slammed her hand against the walls and the ceilings of her tiny pod, her calm shallow breaths, becoming more and more shallow until she failed to take in any air; her panic rendering her helpless. She kicked her legs, her bare feet hitting the bottom of her pod and causing even more pain. “Help!” she meant it as a scream, but it came out as a mere croak, one that burned her neck coming out.
When she felt no response from the outside world, she slammed her fists against the glass, bruising her knuckles but uttering absolutely no pain to the glass itself and opened her mouth yet again, “Help me!” she screeched. It hurt even more this time, and she had the distinct feeling that her voice wasn’t even reaching past the tiny pod that trapped her.
Just when she was about to give up and fall back into her restless, panicked slumber, she heard footsteps in the distance. They were tiny thumping sounds that shook the ground beneath her and made her little glass pod tremble. Her first thought was a positive one, as she was excited that she was finally being set free, but that optimism vanished as quickly as it had come, for she realized that the person approaching her had to be her captor, and there was little to no chance that whatever he had to offer her was good in any way.
Finally, she saw the feet in front of her, heavy boots she vaguely recognized from a moment she hardly remembered. She had no time to rack her brains before the person bent over, punching in what sounded like a code into the side of her pod. Just like that, the glass gave way, releasing all of her stale air and letting in even more harsh, artificial oxygen. Without even thinking of it, she shot up, her frizzy, damp hair flying around her. Her eyes darting around, catching sight of a control panel about ten feet away, three other men with heavy boots walking around, a strange, gun-resembling contraption on their hips and their eyes covered with what looked like extremely expensive sunglasses, and at last four hundred other pods. She couldn’t believe her eyes. In all of her years as a criminal defense lawyer, she had not seen anything like this. Through the glass pods that surrounded her, she was sure she even recognized some of the sedated woman. Had they kidnapped the whole town?
Just as she was pondering this, she felt a heavy hand on her shoulder. She flinched and shifted away from it, trying to shove it off, but she was unsuccessful. Looking down at her was the man she had met in the bar. He had taken his sunglasses off so that she could see his eyes, but something about him seemed off. It didn’t take her long to get over this. Anger sprouted in the pit of her stomach and spread through out her entire being, her blood boiling hot with frustration. She swung her up at his face. “What the hell have you done to me? Where the fuck am-“ but he grabbed her wrist with his right hand and pressed his left over her lips, muffling whatever sound she tried to make. Without so much as a half-ass explanation, her pressed another one of those massive needles into her neck, allowing her to lose consciousness in less than a minute…

The next time she woke up, the glass dome had been sitting open for some time. She could hear the sounds of women shrieking complaints, some crying, and some angrily demanding a phone. Some of the men stopped to comfort some of the women, while the others continued along with their business, zooming in between the pods, administering what looked like vitamins to the women, forcing their mouths open and shining bright lights onto their tongues and in their eyes and ears. As Janette sat up, gazing all about her, her heart much too caught in the confusion of what was going on around her to panic just yet, she couldn’t help but to notice some of the women being helped out of their pods and led away by some of the men. They were trembling, confused and out of place. Some of them wore evening gowns, some club attire, some pajamas, compression pants and sports bras, lingerie, jeans, or absolutely nothing at all. Janette looked at all of these women, realizing that they all had stories, accomplishments, families, but they were all taken, just like her.
As she sat there, her eyes began to blur, the tears stealing her vision from her. She had no idea where she was or how far she was from home, but one thing she knew was that it was going to take a lot more than just her quick legs and a surprise attack to get her out of whatever mess this was. And that’s when the panic finally set in. She drew her legs up to her chest, wrapping her arms around her knees and resting her chin on them. Her heart stopped beating, plummeting to her stomach like a dead rock and leaving her completely thought less. The loss settled in, turning her blood into cold molasses and lifting goose bumps above her skin. Her face was soaked in tears by the time she saw a familiar face.
The man she had met at the bar; the man who was obviously responsible for kidnapping her, stepped towards her. Her eyes went wide as they witnessed his perfect body, his skin, tan and glimmering just like the night before, his hazel eyes, practically as deep as the ocean, and his muscles, cut and just as precise as even the very best sculptor could have imagined. But, unlike that night at the bar, the sight of him just profoundly agitated her. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she asked as he motioned for her to stand up.
He scoffed. “Don’t make this difficult for me. You see all the other men?” he asked, pointing to everyone around him, “Their women are all complying nicely.”
“First of all, I am not, your woman, and, second of all, I won’t comply nicely to anything until you tell me what the hell is going on.” Janette snapped.
He shrugged. “Fair enough.” He then leaned down towards her.
Even at that distance, she could already feel herself giving in to his persuasion, so she reached up, pressing her palm against his chest. “No. That’s close enough.” She snapped. “I learn from my goddamn mistakes.”
The man raised an eyebrow. “Okay. Have it your way, but if you don’t come with me of your own accord, I will have to sedate you. Although, I have to admit, that will make my life a lot harder in the end.”
“What are you planning on doing with me?” Janette demanded, crossing her arms.
“Giving you bath? Getting you cleaned up and presentable.”
“To who?” she badgered, glowering at him.
He rolled his eyes. “Look, can we just have this conversation while you’re in your shower? I do not have the time, or the patience to waste.”
Janette opened her mouth to protest again, but something about having a shower sooner rather than later struck her as extremely appealing.
The man, seeming to have read her mind, extended his hand to help her out of the pod, but she shoved it away, preferring to just do it herself. However, as she grabbed each side of the pod in order to pick herself up, but was unpleasantly surprised to find that she could hardly stand up on her own. Her muscles felt like some sort of stiff-Jell-O contraption and her skin stretched tight, like it hadn’t seen water, or lotion in months. In the end, she did need help getting out of that pod and it annoyed her to no end.
“How long have I been in that thing.” She demanded as he led her down the long isle of pods.
He shrugged. “About four months.”
Janette’s stomach flipped. “That’s simply not true.”
Just then, they arrived at a door on the back wall. It had no doorknob to it, but seemed to magically open when the man pressed his palm against it. Across the threshold was a long hallway, spotted with identical doors, all lacking doorknobs, or any sane method of entry,
The next thing she knew, Janette was watching the man do that creepy hand thing with the door at the end of the hall. Once it popped open, he stepped inside and motioned for her to follow. Her eyes went wide at the sight of a shower big enough to be considered the dance floor of a small club, a massive sink lined with vials and containers filled with all kinds of oils and lotions… and a thin, tight-fitting, strapless, gold minidress hanging off of a tiny vanity stool.
“I’m not wearing that.” Janette retorted, pointed at the dress.
To her surprise, the man just shrugged. “You’ll have to be naked for the real thing anyway.”
Janette’s eyes went wide. “What are you talking about?” she demanded. “What real thing?”
He didn’t answer, but crossed the room to the shower and yanked the door open. “Get in and I’ll tell you.”
“I’m not stripping in front of you.” Janette pressed, even going so far as to cross her arms over her breasts. While it was true that her cleavage didn’t have the same effect after four months of being in a chemically induced coma, she still felt better that way.
“I’ll strip you anyway.” The man pressed, but when Janette’s jaw dropped, he scoffed, and continued with, “Look, I assure you, I cannot get aroused by you anyway.” He replied.
Janette glowered at him. “I don’t even know your name and you want me to shower in front of you?”
He let out a humorless laugh at this. “You humans give me such a headache. You know what, fine. My name is Lane.”
If Janette wasn’t so thrown about the, “you humans,” comment, she would have immediately commenced joking about his name. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
He rolled his eyes, stepping inside of the shower if only to get the water running as he replied with, “I don’t know. Just that, you are human and I am not?”
Janette blinked as she slowly began to take her clothes off. The soiled oxford shirt, stockings and skirt pealed off of her, falling to the ground in an oily mess. She stepped into the shower and shut the door behind him, making sure to avoid making eye contact with him. The water felt heavenly against her skin. “You’re really going to have to start explaining things. Who are you?”
He flexed his jaw, stepping towards the shower just as Janette poured what seamed to be shower gel into her palm. It smelled like some combination of lemons and lavender. She spread it all over her body, not wasting any effort being frugal. “You are asking all of the wrong questions. By the time we get through all of them, it will be next year.”
Janette shrugged, “Well, since I’ve already been here for three months, I’m assuming you have plenty of time.” She replied.
“Quite the contrary.” He replied, fiddling with her dress. “In fact, we are landing in Igora in less than an hour, hence your makeover.”
“What?” Janette snapped. She dropped her shower gel onto the ground in front of her. “What is that?”
Lane raised an eyebrow. “Your new home.”
Aliens. “Nasa was right?” Janette hissed.
“What?” Lane snapped, looking up at her.
She just shook her head. “Nothing. I’m just struggling with the reality of all of this.” She replied. It wasn’t a lie…
