“Rainbow!” I hear the unknown man’s voice from the grove once more. “Don’t!”
No. Someone is trying to take me away from the music. I won’t let him.
I push myself forward, touching the water. Ripples move out from my finger, breaking the reflection of the moon. For a moment, I think it’s strange that I can see the moon’s reflection in the water, but no reflection of myself…
“RAINBOW!!!”
The water I just touched starts spinning. Before I can retreat, a gust of wind pushes me towards the watery vortex that just opened up in the pond. I fall, face-first, through the whirlpool. Primal fear submerges all my thoughts. I open my mouth to scream and cold water fills it, gushing down the wrong pipe.
I can’t breathe.
I cough. I choking—it would be difficult not to. But coughing when you’re still in water is a bad idea. I instinctively inhale and more water fills my throat.
I’m going to die.
I claw and kick at the whirlpool’s walls. I’m so disoriented I don’t know which way is up and which way is down. The water’s pressure beats down on my closed eyelids. It hurts so much.
I’m going to die like this. Alone. Afraid.
No. I can’t. I won’t.
I beat against the current. I refuse to go like this. So I keep fighting, even as the strength leaves my body, the pressure in my lungs becomes intolerable, and my ringing ears go silent.
***
I’m sinking in darkness. Hours may have passed—or maybe just seconds. My body is numb. The pain and the desire to struggle have both faded. I can’t even tell if I’m still alive or not.
Then, there’s a faint crash, causing a shiver to run through me. I feel a slight disturbance in the water, too gentle to be a current. Bubbles spill out over my skin right before something hard and strong winds itself around my torso, pressing me against something warm.
The thing that holds me shoots through the water, taking me with it. I moan, expelling the last of the air that was hidden in my lungs. My nails dig into the thing wound around my chest.
It’s human skin
, I realize.
An arm—and a strong one at that
.
We shoot through the water until, suddenly, we’re out of it. I try to inhale, opening my eyes to a world of blinding light.
My savior carries me a few feet before placing me on a bed of grass. His hands move to my chest, pressing down swiftly and firmly. I cough up water, choking. He grabs my nose and chin, opening my mouth…
…And then placing his mouth on mine.
For a moment, lips softer than they have any right to be caress mine, breathing life into me. In the next moment, they’re gone. He pushes down on my chest again. I fist the long blades of grass, coughing, before he grants me another sweet kiss.
After about twenty seconds of this, I come to my senses and I realize just how
not okay
it is to be getting turned on by someone giving you the Heimlich maneuver. Was my messed-up fight-or-flight response permanently stuck in “fuck-or-fuck”?
I crack my eyes open. More blinding light spills through. I can’t make anything out.
“Easy,” a low, musical, and unmistakably
male
voice soothes.
Oh no.
I shiver. My toes curl. Certain parts of me…start throbbing. What is it with this weird crystal world and hot voices? Crazy werewolf man’s voice dripped with primal sex. This man’s is like…sinful chocolate. Forbidden indulgences. Beautiful, dirty secrets.
I open my eyes again and, this time, force them to remain open until the blurry, bright green world becomes clear.
A dark form leans over me. Beads of water run down his immaculate, muscular chest. His body is a work of art—not just structurally, but in the intricate patterns tattooed over his skin. Strands of long black hair spill over his shoulders. And those eyes, dear god, they steal my breath again. They’re too green to be real, like the rarest precious stones. Emeralds. A forest of shadows and sunlight.
He inhales. My body quivers. Even the sound of him breathing is beautiful…which totally shouldn’t even be a thing but with him
it totally is a thing!
“Are you alright?” he asks.
Well, I’m alright enough to want to jump his bones…but I probably shouldn’t say that.
I open my mouth. “Ugghhuug
hurrrr
…”
He frowns. “What?”
Oh shit! Did I just make a zombie noises in front of this beautiful man? WHY???
I have to save this quick. Unfortunately, I’m in no position to, so what comes out is: “Uhhhuu nooouuu…”
His frown deepens.
Okay, at least this exchange can’t get any worse
, I think.
And then it does.
“You heard my song, didn’t you?” he whispers, running his finger along my jaw as his eyes darken.
Every part of me tightens. Oh God,
that song
.
He
was the one who made that amazing song? I nod.
“That’s too bad. It wasn’t finished yet.” His fingernail runs along the bottom of my neck. It’s surprisingly sharp. “I should erase your memory of that.”
