“That was before.”
“And you’ve come far. I know. I’m not saying you haven’t but this obsession
you’ve got? Nothing good can come from it. You’re trying to make up for how you screwed up…commendable but not feasible.”
“Not after what I’ve done…
is that it?”
“No…
because you already paid your price and forgave yourself. You accepted the Grace of God as your own. You have hell to pay for consequences. That doesn’t go away…but you did your time. The obsession? Just another way to somehow make what happened right or better. And I’m sorry Alder, but nothing's going to bring him back. Creston is dead.”
“You really know how to cheer a guy up.” I remarked sarcastically as I spun and strode to the bag once more, hitting it a few times to alleviate the tension and turmoil boiling within me.
“I’m not trying to cheer you up, amigo. I’m trying to pull your head from your ass and give you some good solid advice. This girl? Brynn? Just because you made and
mistake that cost her brother—”
“Her twin.”
“Her twin, his life…
doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice yours. And you watching this girl, knowing so much about her without ever having met her before your little hero operation, it’s not only creepy—”
He raised his eyebrows. “But it’s a recipe for disaster. Like I said before, and will say again because it’s so damn right; some people can’t forgive. I don’t know if Brynn is one of them. But I do know that you spending time with her will only increase the feeling of betrayal when she finds out the truth. A truth that you knew but didn’t share.”
“I get your point.” I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration.
“Don’t just get it…do it. For my sanity’s sake please.” The sound of Raphael’s steps crinkled the plastic mat as he came over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder.
“I’ll leave her alone.”
“Atta boy.”
“You going to scratch my ears too?” I cocked an eyebrow.
“Funny.” He gave me a sarcastic grin. “I’m done with all the pouring out of feelings crap. Can we beat up something now?” He widened his arms as he asked.
“Yeah. I’ll start with you.” I grinned and took a wrestling position.
“Bring it on, white boy.” Raphael chuckled and followed my lead.
