Anger flared in his chest and he rubbed a hand over it, trying to keep his animal calm. The beast was usually so easy to appease, but for the last two days it had paced and snarled at every person who entered the room. It even growled when the Alphina came in to do her healing sessions over Verity. He didn’t get it. Well, he did, but he didn’t like it.
Tray was a Wolven. One who deeply believed in the old ways of thought. A Wolven was a pack animal. The pack was everything and nothing got in the way of keeping the pack strong and safe. The needs of the pack far outweighed the needs of the one. His Alpha choosing to mate a Witch had spit in the face of all their teachings. He liked his new Alphina. Allison Carver was a strong Witch, who seemed to fit beside Reginald as a mate should, but she wasn’t a Wolven. She didn’t have a Wolf inside her, pushing her in the right direction to bond with the pack. She couldn’t know the true meaning of being a Wolven mate.
Mates were a single unit. They instinctively knew the other’s thoughts and needs. A mate would die before betraying their bond. A Witch had no such loyalty. Love was strong between his Alpha and the Witch, but whether that love would be strong enough to get them through the dangers of the future, he didn’t know. He hoped it would, for the sake of his alpha’s wolf and the safety of the pack.
A soft moan from the bed had him lunging forward in the chair as he studied the pale face of the prettiest Witch he’d ever known. Her lips, usually a soft pink color, were bloodless as they moved. Dark brows drew together as if she was upset over something and long, curly lashes fluttered against pale cheekbones. He leaned closer, bending to hear what she was trying to say. One arm rested on the pillow above her head as his other hand gently brushed a blonde curl off her cheek.
“What is it? Do you hurt, Verity?” He tilted his head, his ear right next to her lips. He felt his Wolf rear back at her whispered words. Shock had him lifting his head to study her face, once more calm and at peace. Had he really heard her right?
“Love is strong enough?” He repeated her words, confusion creasing his brows together. “Strong enough for what, little one?” Alarm shot through his system as her lips moved into a soft smile full of confidence and hidden knowledge.
