“No, please stay Phil…” She urged.

“What the fuck did he do?” said Adam angrily.

“Nothing. It was fine. We got on all right at the start. It was just heated disagreement. We had an argument and I asked him to bring me home. I won’t have him messing me about. We’re through. I won’t be working for him anymore.” She spun her half lie. She hoped it was convincing.

“Well you seem to be in a rather a state over this little row, if you ask me!”  Phil pointed out, looking grim.

God knows what was going through his mind after their little encounter on the sofa. Now he knows she has been staying with another man this weekend. Although he didn’t know the half of it… He must really, really hate her now!

“Perhaps I’m just emotionally overwrought. You know, tired and that. We went out till late last night. I’ll be better soon” She lied.  “You two carry on watching your film. I’ll just sit here with you, if you don’t mind, calm down a bit…”

The film continued and she stared at it unseeingly. Her mind was processing all the little details of the last 24 hours.  Adam and Phil kept glancing her way, checking on her. It just a few short minutes the film finished and Adam stood up stretching.

“Okay, I’m off to bed now; I’m in work tomorrow at 8am… How can they do this to me on a Sunday…?  You sure you’re all right Serry? You look kinda pale?” Adam gave her a searching look.

“Adam it’s okay… off you go – I am feeling a lot better now” she said forcing a smile and he disappeared out of the room to his bedroom and closed the door.

Phil got up to leave. She asked him to sit back down and thought she would take this opportunity to apologise to him again, properly whilst he was here. But really she wanted him to stay a little longer because didn’t want to be on her own just yet;  to go to her room;  to lie awake thinking, worrying and probably crying half the night.

She looked at Phil who was sitting there stony faced but somewhat curious too.

“Fancy a diet coke?” She said “I’m having one.”

“Yeah, I’ll have one Serry, thank you.” he said settling back into the sofa.

She got the drinks and sat down with him opening a packet of peanuts and they both devoured them hungrily.

“So what’s the story with your boss then? Adam told me about it…”

“Well he asked me to stay to see how we got on… but it’s all rather complicated Phil… I don’t want to talk about him at the moment, or think about him either actually.” She wanted to change the subject, to stop Ethan’s face swimming into her mind. “Phil, I was wondering you know, how do you cope with being around our golden boy?” She asked him, steering their conversation to more common ground. “It must be difficult, with all his girls and that. You don’t have many girlfriends, do you?”

“I’m cool with it. I don’t want to be like Adam. That’s his thing. I have dates now and then… anyway I have my own agenda”

“Oh, you do? What kind of agenda is that Phil?” She asked with interest.

“I really can’t tell you that. It’s private.”

“Okay, well that’s up to you. I can’t expect you to treat me as a friend anymore can I? Not after what I’ve put you through.  I really must apologise to you again Phil. I feel so very bad about what happened between us. I like you a lot. We have a long old history don’t we… You, Adam and I.  I don’t want you to think I have become some strange crazy woman or a cold hearted bitch. I didn’t appreciate what I was doing the other day. You see I’ve been having a few issues. Personal development ones.”

“Mmm, I gathered that. It took me a few days to calm down but when I did, I realised that you were behaving rather out of character. You’re normally so reserved! And Serry… I shouldn’t have kissed you so much the other night when we were out. I was the one who put the idea into your head. It’s just as much my fault as yours. I’m so sorry too. I couldn’t help it.”

“You couldn’t?”

“No. Look I should be going now…” Phil gulped down his drink quickly and stood up. She followed him to the door.

“So, we’re good then?” she said.

“We’re good.” He said turning to her. “Night Serry, sleep tight.”

She reached up to him and planted a chaste kiss on his mouth. He was really very, very sweet. She was so glad they were friends again.

“Please … don’t …” he said closing his eyes.

“You said we’re good?” She reminded him.

“No, I’m not good at all. I lied.” He said pulling her to him.

“Oh no…” She murmured softly as his mouth came towards hers.

He kissed her and she responded with a pent up passion. She wanted these vampire lover thoughts to leave her head.  She pushed Ethan’s face out of her mind and focused on the young man in front of her. Phil was so human. She needed some human company and she was having it, right now, all tonight in fact. She didn’t think he would need much persuading as she led him into her room closing the door.

“Serry, please don’t mess with me again” he said in a quiet voice. “I like you way too much…”

“No messing this time Phil. I’m yours for tonight.” She said expectantly. “But, I can’t promise you any more than that, not right now.” That seemed to satisfy him for the moment.

She didn’t stop to think of the complications she was creating or the after effects of this little one night tryst. She just wanted and needed a human to love her and Phil was in the right place at the right time and just too lovely to resist.

He pulled her close and began to kiss her and they moved over to her bed. They lay side by side and she gazed at him fondly as the silvery light from the full moon flooded brightly through the window. Her brother’s childhood friend was now a man and quite an attractive one.  His eyes were wide open and he trailed kisses around her face. His head moved down to her neck.

She tensed a little as he passed the spot where she was bitten but then she relaxed. She knew the marks had already gone…. Little flames of desire started to rise in her belly. Her toes curled in delight. She slipped her hands underneath his t-shirt and felt his warm hard chest beneath. This is how it should be, she thought. If only she felt the same way about Phil as she did about Ethan. She didn’t want some warped version of love that involved drinking blood and producing children who would soon become blood sucking teenagers. She felt horrified at the thought of drinking blood for the rest of her long, possibly immortal life.  She couldn’t stand the sight of blood anyway… it made her feel quite sick!

Blotting out Ethan’s face from her mind yet again she concentrated on what was going on with Phil. She pulled off his t-shirt and took off her top too. She held him close, skin against skin. She lie on top of him and kissed him again for a long, long time. It all felt so natural, simple and nice. He was not going to bite her.

“I’ve wanted you for so long.” He said against her mouth.

“Well now you have me.” She replied softly, feeling warm and comfortable wrapped in his arms. “Was it worth the wait?”

“It was so worth it” he said “Even if it is just for tonight.”

She suddenly felt the urge to take him over for a while. She pulled off his jeans and then hers too… She lie by his side and kissed him lightly all over his chest. She nibbled his ears and licked his neck trailing her hair across him. She gently scraped her nails across him and down to his lower stomach…

“Do you like this… and what about this?” She said smiling as she worked her way over his bare skin.

“Yes, of course I do” he gasped. “especially licking my neck… that is just so hot…do it some more.”

After a while spent gently teasing him she moved back to his side gazing into his soft dark brown eyes.

“So here we are… “ She said. “What shall we do now…?”

He pressed himself to her running his hands over her backside, she felt his hand tugging her panties down, she pulled his underwear down too. Then he was rolling himself on top of her, very gently and sweetly. He made very normal human love to her. Slowly. Twice.  It really was magic. They finally collapsed into sleep wrapped up in each other’s arms.

Chapter 22

Ethan had returned to her flat after driving almost the whole way back to his home. He wanted to be near her tonight. He parked the car a little way back and crept up to the rooftops opposite quickly and stealthily, finding a place to sit. He could stay well hidden in the shadow of the the trees just here. He needed to be close to her like this. Even if he couldn’t see her, it would not matter.

His spirits rose as he looked across the small car park to her window. Her drapes were wide open. He may be able to catch a glimpse of her beautiful face, perhaps watch as she slept.

She was already undressed on her bed, but she was not alone… there was movement inside… who was this…? He moved a little to see more, focusing his vision tightly on the dim interior of the room.

Ethan watched in horrified fascination for a long time as his new mate kissed and touched that man child just like she had done to him. He could see everything all too clearly through her unobscured window … it was like a hot blade stabbing in his stomach. His heart was instantly ripped into a million tiny strips.

Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw tonight.

He wished that his eyesight was not so acute, because he simply had to watch from beginning to end and that his hearing was not so sensitive because he simply had to listen to those little words and sounds of lovemaking….

No one had meant so much to him for so very long; the blood match and his attraction to her were so strong…but he couldn’t accept this betrayal…

He felt rage and disappointment boiling up in his mind… an inferno of despair, disbelief and hurt…

Females were treacherous and unfaithful… he thought she might be the one… but she was no different…

Vampires did not cry real tears – but they cried silently inside.

He had had enough searching for someone…

Enough of everything…

Enough of  his life.

Chapter 23

Phil was still there the next morning when she awoke and she almost burst with happiness at this one simple fact.

There was a small knock at the door and Adam poked his head inside the room which was filled with early morning light.

“You awake, Serry?” he whispered.

She pretended she wasn’t. His eyes took in the whole naked Serry and Phil scene.

“Well I’ll be…I’ll be…f..!” he said completely lost for words and quietly closing the door. At least she wouldn’t have to tell him about all this now. She turned to look at Phil. He was just about awake too.

“Hey” he said.

“Hey” she said.

“Just once more, before I go?” he asked her softly.

Serena smiled and wrapped her arms around him. He kissed her face and his long fingers started to arouse her. He was into very straight sex… no funny business at all. It was still magic.

Phil eventually left mid-morning and Serena spent the rest of the afternoon worrying about things. Adam had not returned from work by 5 in the afternoon and she lay on the sofa fretting. He was probably being tactful, leaving them alone.

What on earth was she going to tell Ethan…? She fretted some more. Despite her newly discovered soft passion for her human boyfriend, she knew in the cold light of day that she wanted Ethan so very much more. He was a heady drug that she already craved. She tried to imagine living her life as a vampire. The prospect made her feel so wretched and sad and she shivered at the idea.  She was confused and torn. Why had she created this further complication? She should never have involved Phil just now. Hopping from Ethan’s bed to Phil in a few short hours was bound to be a recipe for disaster. What a mess she was making of things.

A cold finger of fear prodded at her heart. What would Ethan do if he found out about Phil? He might kill him, that’s what! ….and her brother Adam… he might kill him too. He was a vampire after all! He could prove to be very vengeful… She didn’t know him that well at all. A rising panic started to form in her chest.  Ethan considered her to be his mate now … that was a very powerful bond in vampire terms…. How could she keep all these secrets from everyone…?

What on earth had she done?

She had a sudden thought. She could disappear… Yes! She could go to Jan’s for a while… let things cool off. Jan would let her stay. She quickly called her saying she had an emergency and not to tell anyone. She packed a bag and left the flat quickly leaving Adam a note stuck on the middle of the refrigerator which read…

“Ad – I have gone away on my own to think some things over. I can’t explain any more than that just now, but don’t worry I am okay –  love Serena.”

She turned off her phone so that she would not be disturbed and drove off with just enough fuel to get to Jan’s. She had no money and no idea what she was going to do. She needed to discuss this with someone she trusted. She just couldn’t tell Adam… she was so anxious about what might happen.  It was very likely Janet wouldn’t believe her, but she had to try. She would go mad handling this all on her own.

As she drove along the motorway to Jan’s she tried to think what to say. Jan knew her very well. She knew the type of person she was and that she wouldn’t make up such a farfetched story. She decided she would tell her everything exactly as it happened and just see how it went.

In the end it didn’t go quite the way she planned with Jan.

“No Way! That’s the most ridiculous story I have ever heard in my life!” laughed Janet. “Serry what is the matter with you… have you been on drugs or something?”

“Sadly not Jan. I wish that was the case. I agree it does sound ridiculous. I don’t believe it myself at times… but listen… on Adam’s life, I swear to you, everything I have just told you is absolutely true… every single bloodsucking word of it!”

Janet’s pretty face was pale under her freckles and her mouth was slightly agape… She didn’t know what to say or what to believe. Serena felt the same when Ethan revealed all but she had the hard evidence and proof standing right in front of her. Janet didn’t.  She continued to tell her all the nitty gritty details. The complications with Phil; her fears for them all. Serena could see she was struggling with all of it.
