Read Crash for Me (The Blankenships Book 7) Online
Authors: Evelyn Glass
He turned another look at the laptop. It sat on the desk, innocent and mild. It was coiled up like a snake, though, rattling and teasing at how very much damage it could do to them. How it could tear them both apart at the whim of someone.
He knew that name. Wes Black. He was someone his mother had known through Aaron Schwartz. He’d stood in the hallway before the trip to London, threatening Alex with his bulk and presence. He hadn’t thought the man was a killer, but—well. He hadn’t thought a lot of things.
“Go,” he said. “Go now. Go fast. I want us on the move as soon as Leo’s ready to put whatever plans he has in play.”
She got as far as the door, then turned and ran back to him, flinging her arms around his neck again, claiming his mouth with hers. It was nothing like the calm and gentle kiss from before. She tore at him with her lips and her teeth, and he tore right back, giving her whatever it was that she seemed to need. Courage, control, trust, faith. Whatever she needed.
“Go,” he said again. She gave a brief nod, and she went.
Once she was down the hallway, moving fast, he allowed himself one brief moment to collapse against the wall. He allowed himself to feel the fear, to be paralyzed by it, completely terrified. And then he hauled himself back together and put himself back in motion.
He’d lost his sister. He’d lost his mother. There was no way under the sky that he was going to let anyone or anything take Zoey away from him. His stride down the hall was purposeful. He told himself that there was nothing to fear.
He was a Blankenship. For better or worse, he’d take care of his own.
