Criteria (YA Paranormal Romance) (Wisteria) (7 page)

“We had a good harvest this year, so this won’t have any impact. We’d give you ammo if we didn’t think you’d shoot us in the backs,” Wisteria continued with a cold smile. “Like I said, we wanted you to join our community, but it looks like you guys won’t really fit there.”

“You were assessing us?” Fi gasped. “Trying to decide if we were good enough?”

“Naturally, we can’t just let anyone join our community,” Wisteria explained. “Especially a group as unstable as yours.”

“You really have a cult thing going on here.” Garfield shook his head. “Weird swapping thing and bullying.”

“So what’s going to happen now?” Fi inquired.

“They’re leaving. That’s why they brought the food,” Yumi interjected. “They don’t want anything to do with us.”

“Then why round everyone up?” Jack asked.

“Because when we showed up to talk to you, you almost killed my friends,” Wisteria replied. “The Major didn’t want to take that chance again.”

“Your friends?” Fi heard a warm and rich voice remark in surprise.

She turned and saw Steven limp in. His face was banged up and his lip looked swollen.

“What happened to you?” Fi moved toward him.

“So, you consider me a friend.” He grimaced at Wisteria. “Really?”

“Not here.” Wisteria shot him an angry look. “We’ll discuss this later.”

Fi turned to Steven. Seeing the scars that Jack, Monty, or Brian inflicted, stung her. “Steven? Jack did this to you?”

“Come on, Yumi, we need to go.” He turned to leave.

“Wait,” Fi called as the intruders started to leave. “You’re going with them? You’re leaving us, Yumi?”

“You shouldn’t have told Jack I was going to let them go—”

“Yumi, you’re not going anywhere!” Jack turned to her. “No one is.”

The outsiders looked around the hall as all residents of Lady Luggard’s School stood unmoved. They weren’t leaving Jack after all he’d done to ensure their survival and Fi knew they were right to stay.

“I can’t stay. They have Greg and he’s always meant more to me than you guys. He was my real friend—all along.” She glared at the group she was leaving behind.

“Greg?”

“Remember, you left him to die?” Yumi glared at Jack and Fi.

“He told us about this place. We thought maybe we could help, but then he told us Jack and the inner circle was more of the torturing kind,” Wisteria replied with a cold glance over the entire group. “We needed to see if that was true.”

“So you lied. You didn’t just come here for refuge.”

“We did, because we thought the school was deserted. Greg never made it here. You chased him away over two years ago. When he stumbled into our community, he had no clue if you’d eventually made it,” Wisteria added. “It doesn’t matter really, because what’s done is done.”

“Steven, everything you said was a lie, wasn’t it?” Fi turned to him.

“Wisteria, Steven, get out here now!” a man bellowed. “Or we’re leaving you here.”

“Fi, you wouldn’t want to get involved with Steven anyway. Trust me.” Wisteria pushed her away, shutting the doors behind them.

With the slamming closed of the double doors of Lady Luggard’s School for Girls, Fi realized what she’d done. She’d lost her loyal best friend. It was true—she was too young, just as Wisteria had claimed, and maybe she wasn’t grown up at all.
