“That guy was in serious need of a mustache to twirl,” I said, turning slowly back to Talley.
Moving took a great deal of personal effort. The stress of the day, coupled with the handful of pills Mom made me swallow before the service, was starting to have an affect on me. I was tired, sore, and groggy.
“Huh?” Talleyʼs head whipped around. She moved to block my field of vision, but was too slow. I saw him, standing on the edge of the wooded area that surrounded the cemetery. My heart stalled as the wolfʼs grey eyes met mine for the briefest of moments before he ran into the forest.
THE END
Writing your first novel is a terrifying and crazy-making experience. I wouldnʼt have made it through without the help of Crystal Blackwell, who read every single chapter as I wrote it, and then every single draft that followed; Alyson Beecher and Erin Lowery, the worldʼs best online writing partners/support team; Jennifer Talley and Kelly Sole, friends who love me enough to tell me when something doesnʼt work; Tori, Kitty Kat, Meg, Jake, Victoria, Emily the Jorge, and Emily the Bobbit who made sure Scout didnʼt sound old or lame; Pottsie for making sure my characters kick butt; Terri Kirk, super-librarian and beta-reader; and Sarah Pace-McGowan, the Grammar Goddess who taught me the difference between “whelp” and “welt”. The biggest thanks of all goes out to my mom, who in addition to doing the good mother thing of encouraging me and believing I could write a novel when I had sizable doubts, gave Scout her stitches and blood transfusions. And thanks to
you
for reading this book. Seriously, it means a lot to me that you did.
