CHAPTER ONE
Chapter 1

“1, 2, 3, 4…”

The sweat glistened from my skin, leaving droplets across the floor as I made my way across the room. Every step increased my body temperature as I tried my best to control my breath. My heart was beating out of my chest. I stared at my reflection, ensuring every move was precise.

“Don’t forget to breathe.”

I let out a sigh and stared at the floor beneath me. My dark brown hair covered my face as the sweat dripped from each strand down to my toes. I clasped my fists and started to shiver, defeated.

“You almost had it! Why’d you stop?” Danny lay his warm hands on my shoulders, waiting for me to look up.

“Get some water, Crystal, we’ll try it again.”

I looked up slowly locking my frustrated glance with Danny’s sexy light brown eyes.

“I can’t do this. There’s just no way.”

“Look, you’re this close,” he said, creating a small gap between his index finger and thumb as one of his eyes began to squint. “All you have to do is try a little harder.”

“I know, but I can’t even get this right. What makes you think the judges would even bother with me?”

“Girl, stop that nonsense. You know you’ve got talent, stop trying to act like you don’t.”

Danny has been my best friend since grade school. He has a slim, athletic figure. He was a dancer and a damn good one at that. He could also sing exceptionally well, better than a lot of popular singers in the business right now. We’ve grown closer over the years. It was a strictly platonic relationship, though, I often wonder what he’s packing under those sweats. No, that’s too weird. Why do I think these thoughts?

The door opened behind us and some lady peeped her head in, “I’m sorry but we’re closing soon. You two have 5 minutes before the lights shut off.”

We nodded in unison at her as the door began to close. Our university had a dance department and we often used it to practice, well,

mostly for Danny, but I always found it fun to tag along. I was more of a singer, but according to Danny, I guess my dance moves weren’t too bad either.

I stared at the mirrored walls as Danny placed his warm hands on my wrists, controlling my movement, “You start down here, then lift your arms up here. Got it?”

I rolled my eyes and grinned, “You make this seem so easy, Danny.”

“Well, it ain’t
that
hard. I know you got it in you, Crystal.”

“I know, but..”

I felt a sting against my ass cheeks, “No buts! You got this in the bag.”

He picked up his gym bag and took a towel out to wipe the sweat off of his body. “Let’s get out of here, I’m starving!”

CHAPTER TWO
Chapter 2

We ordered pizza and watched some scary movie about a creepy girl with long hair. One hand on a pizza slice, the other clasping Danny’s strong biceps.

“What’s happening? Oh, my god why is she walking so slow! Something’s going to happen, I can feel it!” I squeezed tighter.

“Girl, just look at the screen! You better not get any of that pizza on me,” he said, eyes locked on the television as he took another bite of his own slice.

This continued throughout the entire movie. My nervous chatter and his annoyed replies. He knew I hated scary movies but we always ended up watching them anyway. Danny lived only a few houses away from me and our neighborhood was always chillingly quiet at night.

“You ready for tomorrow?” he asked, handing me a warm blanket. He knows me too well, I was not about to walk myself back home after that movie.

I pressed my face into it and took a deep breath. It smelled just like Danny, he probably just handed me the one he’s been using.

“I think so. I’ll just practice all the moves in my dreams, I guess.”

Tomorrow was the day we’ve been practicing all summer for — the MK Entertainment auditions. These auditions were held every other year and this would be their third event. Contestants all over the world would gather to try and win a contract to be part of MK Entertainment — an entertainment company specializing in music and television. They had talents varying from extremely successful boy bands, girl bands, solo singers, and even A-list actors and actresses. It’s been Danny’s dream for all of his life to get in, and he thought I might as well come with him to the tryouts. I figured it wouldn’t hurt, I don’t really mind tagging along.

“Alright, let’s get some rest. We’re gonna need it,” he said, making his way to the light switch.”

“Wait!” I sat up, “Please sleep here, I’m still scared!”

“Are you serious?”

“PLEASE.”

He looked at me, scrunching his eyebrows together, “Fine, you wuss.”

I felt secure as he grabbed a blanket from the other room and laid down on the couch near me.

“Good night.”

CHAPTER THREE
Chapter 3

I woke to the aroma of coffee and bacon. My eyes still trying to accept the sunlight, I stretched my arms and my left fist smacked softly against a firm object.

“Morning, Sunshine. Drink up.”

I forced one eye open and let out a groan, my knuckles resting between Danny’s thigh as he held out a cup of coffee for me.

“Careful, a little higher and you would have struck gold.”

“Morning,” I replied, shocked at how deep my voice was. I let out a loud yawn and stretched my hands upwards, but he was too quick.

“How dare you! If I spilled, it would have landed all over your face. Get up! We should leave soon before the line gets too crazy.”

I groaned as I sat myself up to take the coffee from his hands.

“Nope. UP!”

I rubbed my eyes, “Fine.” Mornings weren’t my thing.

I stood up, half asleep as I watched Danny blow the heat away from the cup. His lips opened slowly creating an o-shape while waiting for my lips to do the same. I took a sip of the warm coffee as he fed it to me. The sip warmed my entire body and my eyes smiled with satisfaction.

Danny prepared bacon and eggs for breakfast and we sat inside of his small kitchen as we conversed about how life would change if we happened to pass the auditions.

“I’ll let you hang out in my mansion,” he said.

“Yeah, I’ll have my limo driver take me over after my I go on a shopping spree in France.”

I often wondered why Danny was single. He was fairly good looking, had a great body, full of energy, and was full of confidence. He was also a bit sassy and offensively straightforward, but I loved that about him. He never bullshit anyone and spoke his mind. We never really talked about our personal lives so I came up with the conclusion that he was either gay and still in the closet, or he just didn’t really care enough to devote himself to an actual relationship. He was pretty much a brother to me, always making sure I don’t do anything too crazy while watching after me at the same time. Any girl would be lucky to have him, really.

CHAPTER FOUR
Chapter 4

We arrived at the auditions at about 6:45 AM and joined a line of about 50 to 60 people. It grew over five times that size by 7 AM. Perfect timing.

In front of us was a guy with blonde hair, a Hawaiian shirt, and a black fedora that kept sing-talking about himself. He explained that he didn’t want to talk normally because he was trying to warm up his vocal cords. He got annoying real quick. Behind us was a girl in sweats. She had a long, light brown ponytail and wore earbuds while dancing in a way where I would have sworn she was trying out karate moves on us.

Danny and I recited vocal warm ups together and he gave me pointers about my dance moves. We both had separate acts, he would go first and I’d follow right after — unless they break us up for whatever reason.

A man with a headpiece handed us both our numbers and directed us into a room with other talents who were waiting anxiously for their turn to perform. The room was large and noisy from everyone practicing. There were large flat screen televisions set up with a live feed of the auditions.

I watched closely, being pleasantly surprised by a majority of the contestants — there were a few cringeworthy ones as well. They’ll probably get on TV for the joke segments at least.

“Number 68,” blared the loud speaker. Danny stood up and I gave him a strong hug.

“Good luck!”

“You too. I’ll be waiting for you on the other side.” He walked towards the door to the judges panel, hopping on both feet while tilting his neck side to side like some boxer getting ready to fight.

I watched intently at the screen during Danny’s performance. He was absolutely perfect and from the smile on his face, I could tell he knew it. The judges were speechless, it was one of those performances where they didn’t even have to say anything, he was in. He really did it.

* * *

“Number 69.”

I took a deep breath, feeling confident but frustrated that I had to follow such a perfect performance by Danny. I was really happy for him but nervous cause I was next and my emotions weren’t sure which way to go.

I giggled at my number. It really cheered me up which was exactly what I needed. I
would
get 69.

As I made my way in, I paused at the center of the stage on top of an ‘x’ created with black tape as a beaming light focused on me. I felt the warmth of it and could barely make out the three judges sitting before me. I knew from watching the screen earlier that the left one was a producer named Bill, on the right was Anna, an old singer who was way past her glory days, and in the middle was the CEO of MK Entertainment, Michael Krinsen.

Although I was actually nervous, I didn’t care too much about the audition like Danny did. I just wanted to make sure he had some company. Being a popular celebrity was never really a goal of mine.

“Crystal?” asked Bill.

“Hello.”

“Ready when you are.”

I started off with the dance bit that I’ve been practicing this past week. It was a little shaky but I knew I would get them with the singing. About halfway through, my performance was halted and the judges spoke. I always thought it was rude how they just cut people off, but I didn’t take it personally considering they had over a few thousand more contestants to go.

“You have an amazing voice, Crystal,” said Anna, smiling bright. I liked her, she has a good ear.

“Yeah, her dancing needs some work but her voice is on point,” said Bill.

They both looked at each other, then back at me. I stood there fumbling my fingers, still slightly out of breath from the performance and feeling hot because of the light. It felt as if I was standing there for an hour while I awaited for their response.

“I say you’re in!”

“Yes, me too!”

I smiled, wiping the sweat off my forehead while eagerly awaiting Michael’s response. His eyes were focused on mine, expressionless as he bit on a white pen. His dress shirt fit him perfectly and his wristwatch screamed money as the shine from it lit his vascular forearms. I didn’t really notice him on the screen earlier because he was so silent. In fact, I don’t remember seeing him show up at the other auditions from the past years.

He squinted a little and shook his head side to side. It was a no and just like that, everything was over.

To pass, you need the approval of all three judges and that was final. I stood there silently, unsure of what to say. My dancing couldn’t have been that bad, could it?

I felt myself tense up as the rage started to fill my thoughts.

I glared at Michael, “Was it the dancing? What did I do wrong?!”

He looked down and started writing on a small index card, not acknowledging me at all. I wasn’t sure if I was more pissed about not passing the audition or because he didn’t even bother to say anything about my performance.

The man with the headpiece began pulling me away but I pushed him off of me and stomped towards the judges table. I slammed my palms on top of the desk.
