Chapter One

Nicki was… happy. Well, kind of.

Life was going well.

She was having fun at work, something she owed Jonas quite
a bit for. Her life at home was becoming quite special, too.

It was Sunday evening, and she had had the most wonderful
weekend.

The way it had started out on Saturday, she had expected
it to be a very rated-R, Not-Safe-For-Work, definitely adult weekend. But she’d
been surprised.

It had started that way, and she made no apologies for
that whatsoever. She loved it. She loved how it had ended up.

But it didn’t quite turn out that way. They had had a
wonderful morning, fallen asleep together, and had woken up feeling extremely
hungry. So they had gone out, had hot dogs – which made Jonas and his clearly
adolescent stomach very happy – and they had gone to a roller rink in the
evening.

They had a blast. By the time they got back home, Nicki
had expected Jonas to join her and Mark. But he hadn’t.

He had kissed Nicki on the cheek, told her that he knew
that she and Mark needed to talk, and made his way to his room.

Mark, though, had been far too exhausted to talk. By the
time she’d showered and got ready for bed, she had found Mark fast asleep. He
had looked like a tired angel, thought Nicki.

So she had snuggled up next to him and they had slept. She
had felt so at peace – she couldn’t recall ever feeling like that before. It
had been wonderful.

She told herself that over and over again, as seeds of
discontent made themselves known, sprouting and weaving their tendrils around
her heart, squeezing, when she wanted only the soft satisfaction of knowing
that her life was exactly as she wanted it to be.

After that lovely morning when they’d had such a wonderful
time, none of them had touched each other. Nicki found that extremely odd after
the intimacy they had shared.

Sunday had been very mellow and laidback so far. They’d
gone out for brunch that had turned into a silly trip to Coney Island. They’d
had fun.

Of course they’d had fun, and she was happy. Of course she
was.

But she was beginning to feel unsettled. They were acting
like old friends, hanging out together. There was no longer any hint of the
intimacy they had shared that morning.

She thought she could feel it simmering under the surface,
but if she tried really hard, she could pretend that it hadn’t happened at all.

Now, Jonas and Mark were watching television – a
Superman
marathon, and she had been outvoted there – and they looked perfectly
comfortable with each other.

To be completely honest, they had shown no signs of
discontent or discomfort at all. She was the one feeling off balance. That was
odd, too. She was usually the one who was very happy to go with the flow and
not make plans.

But now, as she watched two men who were hugely important
to her sitting together and watching TV in companionship, she felt like she
wanted to hold onto both of them – forever. She wanted them both in her life.

She wanted them to love her, and each other. She needed
the certainty of having that every morning when she woke up. She wanted to wake
up with them every morning. She wasn’t sure if she could be happy without that
now.

And she wanted the intimacy they had shared, and more.

Mark had kissed Jonas. It had been one of the most erotic
things she had ever seen in her life. Her body and mind had responded in ways
she hadn’t known she could handle. Even more importantly, her heart had
responded to it so potently, so beautifully. It had made her happier than all
the pleasure they had given her, together.

It had changed things, realized Nicki; it had become more.
Instead of her fantasy of being pleasured by two beautiful men, now she wanted
all three of them to enjoy each other and love each other.

She was falling in love with Jonas, realized Nicki. Maybe
she had always been a little bit in love with him. They had shared so much,
after all. She had needed that uninhibited hint of desire in her to recognize
everything they could have together.

She was in love with Mark, too. She had never doubted
that, not for a moment. She knew that Mark felt the same way about her. She was
a lucky woman to have that.

But now, she found herself falling in love with the idea
of Jonas and Mark being together, too. She loved seeing them together. She
wanted them to love each other.

She wanted Jonas to love both of them.

But was that what Jonas wanted? He had seemed to be open
to the idea of moving there. But everything, so far, had been temporary. Jonas
had mentioned a few houses a friend of his wanted to show him. He had talked
about somebody who wanted a roommate.

He had even mentioned something about his old job back in
San Francisco, a job he hadn’t technically quit, yet.

Nicki had always felt like Jonas had commitment issues in
college, and that was why he refused to date anybody. Maybe he still had them.
Maybe this was just a break for him – a lovely vacation that they could all
remember.

But Nicki wanted more than that.

She wanted all three of them to stay together. She wanted
Jonas to quit his job and work with her, because she couldn’t imagine going to
work without him, either. He challenged her, and made her do better.

And Mark… How did Mark feel about all of this? She had
been so focused on getting the three of them together that she had no idea if
Mark would be open to making this a more permanent situation, either. She hoped
he would be.

But all three of them did need to talk.

Thinking, worrying, Nicki finally fell asleep on the rug
as the two men she was incredibly fond of watched her instead of the screen
they were supposed to be watching.

Chapter Two

Jonas watched as Nicki fell asleep.

He was beginning to appreciate why Nicki loved Mark so
much. The man was obviously incredibly laidback. It was probably good for
Nicki. She was usually on the go.

She thought she was very easygoing, but she really wasn’t.
She had a different idea of what her happy ending might be than most people.
But she wasn’t very flexible about what that was.

He was beginning to confront one of the reasons why he had
never told Nicki how he felt about her when they were in college. One reason
was what he had already told her, of course. He had been sure that Nicki couldn’t
handle a more long-term relationship at that point. She had wanted to
experiment, experience everything. He had understood that.

But, he could now admit to himself, he had very
conveniently focused on Nicki’s problems with commitment and not on his own.
Now that he found himself facing it, he could no longer deny it.

He found the idea of commitment pretty scary, too. He
loved Nicki. He had always loved Nicki. He didn’t need to think twice about
that.

He wanted Nicki, too. He wanted to make love to her. He
hadn’t done that, because Mark hadn’t been completely comfortable with that.
But he had seen her, watched her as she was pleasured until she screamed in
release. It had made him happy.

And aroused. It had been the most erotic thing he had ever
seen.

But Mark was a complication. He had liked Mark, of course,
but he had never expected to… well, to
like
him.

It was also troubling to see just how well Nicki and Mark
fit. They belonged together. He could see that.

He was beginning to want both of them with an intensity
that was uncomfortable. He was perilously close to needing them.

He sneaked a look at Mark and saw that he was engrossed in
the show on TV. He was extremely handsome. Jonas had to admit that even if
Nicki hadn’t been there, he would eventually have found himself hitting on
Mark.

But what the man thought was a bit of a mystery. Nicki, he
knew, had been surprised when Mark had been so agreeable to the idea of trying
new things. She hadn’t really expected that from him.

So he obviously had hidden depths.

But now, Jonas wanted to explore those hidden depths for
himself, too. It was, to be honest, a bit of an uncomfortable situation.

There was a part of him that just wanted to pack up and go
home – go back to San Francisco, where he could find his familiar life and familiar
job and go on with everything just as it had been before. Maybe he could come back
to New York once in a while and stay with Mark and Nicki. They were a unit, he
could see – the kind that could stay together forever. He could enjoy them, and
let them enjoy him, once in a while.

It would be a good plan. He wouldn’t have to make a
commitment. There would be no promises and no ties.

But the thought of a life like that left him empty and
sad. He didn’t want that anymore. He wanted a part of the security that Nicki
and Mark had found in each other. It was a warm, safe feeling, as if they could
curl up with each other and fall asleep, knowing they’d be taken care of no
matter what.

And that, Jonas thought, grinning, sounded very much like
a commitment-phobe trying to find another word for what sounded exactly like
commitment.

Nicki was fairly easy to read. She wanted to have her cake
and eat it, too. That’s what she always wanted. That’s what he loved about her,
one of the many things he loved about her.

But Mark took longer to get used to new things. He had
welcomed Jonas with an openness that was astonishing, but he couldn’t change
who he was.

The only solution, decided Jonas, was for them to talk –
just the two of them. He would have to talk to Mark before he could make his
choice. Maybe, just maybe, talking to somebody else who wasn’t as sure of
everything as Nicki always was would help him make up his mind.

There was also the fact that he was extremely attracted to
Mark, and growing to respect him. He respected how he always put Nicki and her
needs first. He didn’t think Nicki saw all the little ways in which he did
that.

Mark wasn’t jealous, either. It was refreshing. Nicki
needed a special kind of man to love her as she deserved to be loved, without
expecting her to change. She had found that man in Mark.

But now, he thought, perhaps they had both found somebody
who would give them what they need, though they hadn’t been looking for him. He
had come with the intention of seeing if Nicki would be open to being with him,
being intimate with him. He had gotten a lot more than he bargained for.

Now he wondered if he could let it all go. But even
considering that he might need both of them scared him enough to want to book
himself on the first flight back home.

It was a dilemma.

He could’ve gone round and round for hours and not found a
solution, but Mark turned to him and smiled. There were nerves in that smile.

“Jonas, I think we need to have a little talk now that Nicki
is asleep. But if we don’t agree, we can’t tell her about it.”

He was right, realized Jonas. Taking a deep breath, he
nodded.

“Let’s go for a walk,” he suggested.

And so, they went for a walk, to talk about how their
lives would change, to make the woman they both loved happy.

Chapter Three

They walked in silence for a while. Neither knew how to
start the conversation.

Finally, Mark broke the tense silence.

“You matter to Nicki, a lot.”

Jonas was quiet a while longer, trying to figure out just what
he could say to that.

Finally, he sighed and decided that the truth was the best
he could do.

“She matters a lot to me, too. She always has.”

Mark took some time to think this over.

“You were in love with her in college, then. I guess that
makes sense. I wondered how you could be so close and never want her, never be
in love with her. I know I couldn’t do that.”

Jonas shrugged.

“Nicki is… She’s incredible. I’ve never met anybody else
like her, and believe me, I’ve tried. But her happiness matters to me more than
anything else, Mark. You have to believe that. I would never do anything to
make her unhappy. You make her happy, so I would never want to come between the
two of you.”

Now it was Mark’s turn to shrug. A slow grin dawned on his
face.

“I don’t think you could. Do you know something? If I’d
ever had any doubts whether Nicki loved me, whether Nicki and I were meant to
be together, this weekend would’ve gotten rid of all of them. I know she cares
about you very deeply. But that hasn’t changed how much she loves me. I saw
that. That tells me that we’re meant to be together. I will never have to deal
with jealously because I know that no matter what, Nicki loves me.”

Jonas didn’t know what to say. That was true. Even when he
had tried to seduce her, when she’d been so turned on that he knew she’d been
dripping wet for him, she had said no – she had said no because she loved Mark
and respected him.

“But,” Mark went on, “she loves you, too. I know that
beyond a shadow of a doubt now. I can see it in how she looks at you, how she
talks to you. More, have you seen how she looks when we’re together?”

Jonas chuckled.

“You mean the proud mama hen look? Yeah, I’ve seen it.”

Mark relaxed.

“It’s important to her that we get along. I want her to be
happy, Jonas. I’d do anything to make her happy. She makes me happy. She wants
us to get along well. I’d like to think that we’ve grown to like each other for
more than Nicki’s sake, too.”

Jonas found that he could nod easily, agreeing.

“Mark, I don’t know if Nicki told you that I’m bi. I love
Nicki. I’ve been in love with her for a long time. She will never agree to make
love with me, not all the way, without your approval. Not unless you want it,
too. And… I like you. I like you in… all kinds of ways. I know you were
surprised at the… little interlude we had. I wanted to give you time to deal
with it. It’s frustrated Nicki.”

Mark smiled ruefully.

“Subtle, Nicki is not. She wants us to make up our minds
and just decide that everything’s fine. It isn’t so difficult. I… I’m not sure
if I’m… If I feel that way about you. I mean, I can’t deny that I feel
something. But I’m not sure.”

Jonas wanted to take Mark’s hand and give him a reassuring
squeeze. But that, judged Jonas, was something he wouldn’t want at the moment.

“Mark, there’s no deadline here. You don’t have to figure
everything out this weekend. You have the rest of your life with Nicki. After
seeing you together, I’m sure of that.”

They walked in silence a while longer.

“You know what Nicki wants, right?”

Jonas nodded. He did.

“I have an offer to join Nicki’s firm here. I wouldn’t
mind taking it. Professionally, it would be a great move. Personally, it would
mean being closer to Nicki. But now… Well, I think it’s fair to say that you
deserve to be a part of that decision, too. It isn’t all ours. I can’t be here
and not be in Nicki’s life. I would like to be in your life, too.”

Mark smiled, slowly.

“You know what, Jonas? I think I could deal with that. We
could deal with it one day at a time, and we could just take it as it comes.
But right now… It isn’t just for Nicki. It’s for me, too. I would like you to
be a part of our lives.”

In accordance, they turned back and walked home again. On
the way, Mark started laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

“Well… Can you imagine what Nicki would have said if she’d
been a part of this conversation?”

That made Jonas chuckle, too.

“Oh yes, I could. She would have demanded that we just
kiss already and get it over with. And it would’ve been as much for her as for
us.”

“She’s a very special girl.”

“She is. She is our special girl, isn’t she?” asked Jonas,
and the answer was very important to him.

Mark smiled gently.

“Let’s go home and show her how much we love her. I think
she’s been waiting for that for a while now, don’t you?”

Feeling lighter, getting more excited with every step,
Jonas eagerly followed Mark and they walked home with a little spring in their
step.

It might not be the most conventional or easiest
situation. Jonas might still be a bit uncertain. Mark might still be coming to
terms with it. But they were all happy in that moment, and that’s all that
mattered.

And, it mattered a hell of a lot.
