The words didn’t need to be spoken, because Jessica already knew. “I know, but I feel his presence today. I believe he’s happy.”
Marie sniffed. “Yes, he would be happy for his sister on this day, wouldn’t he?”
They hugged again before breaking apart. “I think it’s time for you to be escorted to your seat, I hear the organist playing.”
Her mother gave her a kiss on the cheek. “You make a lovely bride, unconventional or not.”
“Thank you. That means a lot, Mom.”
“You know, Keith and I would have been happy to watch the children for you more than just tonight, so you and Simon can have some time alone. And I’m sure Ann wouldn’t mind watching them for a couple of days.”
“Mom, I appreciate the offer, but you and Dad are newlyweds yourselves. You two should be enjoying each other, not babysitting the children.”
Marie waved her hand dismissively with a snort. “Nonsense. They’re our grandbabies, and we love spending time with them, just as we’ll enjoy spending time with the ones on the way.”
Keith stuck his head in the room. “Marie, they’re about to begin the march. The usher is waiting to escort you in.”
Marie gave Jessica one last kiss before hurrying off.
“You look lovely today, Princess.” Her father held out his hand to her.
She allowed him to lead her outside of the room. “Thank you, Daddy. I’d feel better if I didn’t look like I’d swallowed a watermelon.”
“No one will notice because they’ll be looking at your radiant face.”
Jessica smiled and patted his arm. “Dad, you always know the right thing to say.”
She watched nervously as Ellie, her matron of honor, walked down the aisle.
She was next.
The music changed to
Pachelbel’s Canon in D major.
Her song. The wedding planner opened the door and the guests stood up. Jessica clutched her father’s arm as nerves began to take over, then she saw him.
Simon stood by the altar in his tuxedo, looking handsome. He looked just as jittery as she felt, but when their eyes met, everything was suddenly okay.
If someone had told her a couple of years ago she would end up spending the rest of her life with him, she would have laughed, but now, she wouldn’t have it any other way.
One old proverb came to mind in that moment: To err is human, but to forgive is divine. And there was no better feeling than finding divine.
