The
simple movement seemed to make Jay lose all control. He pulled her fully
beneath him, his hands starting to skim over her body. He broke free of their
kiss for a moment, and stared at her, his eyes scanning her face, her body, her
face again.

“God,
you're so beautiful,” he said in a strangled whisper.

Wordlessly,
she reached for him again. This time his lips crashed back onto hers with
force. His tongue sparred with her own, leaving her breathless. Through the
haze, she felt his hand tug at her t-shirt. The movement dragged her back to
reality with a thump.

“Can
anyone see us?” She whispered. “What if someone comes along?”

“I'm an
idiot,” he groaned. “Why aren't we somewhere more private? I should've known I
wouldn't be able to control myself around you.”

He let
go of the hem of her t-shirt, kissing her again. The relentless onslaught of
his hands never stopped, grazing over her breast, teasing her nipple through
the thin cotton. Kayla gasped in pleasure, and Jay ground his hips against
hers. With every move of their bodies, they betrayed their mutual attraction.
She liked being able to feel the effect she was having on him, knowing that he
had as little control as she did.

Jay's
hand wound into her hair, before using it as leverage to tug her head to the
side. He kissed and sucked down her neck, making Kayla's body arch in pleasure
again. Her legs felt weak. If someone came by now, she wouldn't even be able to
stand and make a pretence at normalcy.

Teeth
grazed against her neck, before Jay's mouth was back on hers, hot and wet, her
swollen lips unable to resist him. Abruptly, he pulled back, but his face stayed
only inches from hers.

“What
if you don't lose any clothes?” He whispered. “I'll make it worth your while.
I'll make you feel so good.”

Kayla's
breath hitched in her throat, his offer leaving her unable to do anything other
than nod mutely. Immediately he dropped his head and mashed his lips into hers
again. His hand slipped under her t-shirt, and pulled down her soft bra cup.
Rough fingers teased her nipple to attention, sending sparks tingling through
her entire body.

She
wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling his hips hard against hers. She
could feel how badly he wanted her, and she liked it. She ground against him
and he gasped, eyes wide, tugging on her hair again.

“Tell
me how much you want it.” His voice was low and tight. “Tell me.”

“Please.
I really want it. Please,” she gasped.

He
dropped his head back to her neck, but this time nipped her skin, as well as
kissing it.

“Beg.”

“Please.
Jay, please, I want it.”

The
sound of her moaning his name seemed to send him over the edge, and he pulled
roughly at the waistband of her shorts. Holding her body close with one arm, he
slipped his other hand under her panties, and over her womanhood.

Jay
paused, gauging her reaction. She moaned and pushed against his hand. He
started to stroke, slow, rough motions, against the top of her pussy. Kayla
felt as though her body was on fire. Every fibre of her being was centred on
his hand, and where he was touching her. She pulled his face back down to hers kissing
him again, their tongues intertwined. Jay's hand pressed down harder on her
clit, and she gasped against his mouth.

“God,
you're so wet,” he growled. “Tell me it's me that's doing that to you. Tell me
you want more.”

“I want
more,” she half whispered, half moaned. “It's all I can think about, please
give me more.”

Jay
slipped his free hand beneath her rear, tilting her pelvis up. He continued
stroking and circling her clitoris, and bent his head to gently bite her nipple
through her t-shirt. Her hands clawed at his back in desperate need.

Shudders
rippled through her body as he slipped a finger inside her, hooking it upwards
to press against her G-spot. Kayla's whole body was being taken over by ripples
of bliss. He slipped a second finger inside her, and started to move faster,
continuing to stroke the nub of pleasure inside her. Kayla could feel an orgasm
building, sparks flying through her whole body.

“Please
don't stop!” She pleaded. Jay maintained the brutal rhythm, biting down
slightly harder on her breast, and pulling her even tighter against him.

Kayla's
whole body trembled as she finally came, and she bit down on the back of her
hand to stop herself from crying out. Waves of gratification rolled over her,
one after the other. Her whole body clenched, and she pulled Jay even closer,
burying her face in his neck.

She
stayed with her eyes closed for a moment, then stole a look at Jay. He was
grinning down at her, looking pleased with himself.

“Well,
you asked,” he said. “It would be terribly rude to refuse a lady as special as
you.”

She
laughed and ducked her head away from his smirking gaze.

“That,
uh... That was amazing,” she blurted out. “I've never done that before. You
know... In the open air.”

“Neither.”
He eyed her. “I don't seem to be able to control myself much around you. Come
here.”

He pushed
himself away to sit next to her with his legs open, then pulled her to sit
between them, her back to his chest. The sun had gone down, but they'd been too
wrapped up in each other to notice before now. The view over Honolulu was even
more beautiful at night. The sparkling lights of the city shone against the
untouched shoreline, and inky black sky. Waves crashed in the distance, and the
air tasted fresh and clean.

“You
know, this is what it looked like when I flew in a few days ago,” she told him.
“Whenever I see a city from far away like this, I always think it looks like a
fairy town. Is that stupid and cheesy?” She felt Jay smile behind her.

“I
don't think I've ever really thought about fairies being involved. But you're
right, it's pretty magical.”

They
sat in companionable silence for a while longer, floating above the city in
their own little bubble, his arms wrapped around her. Eventually Jay stretched
his legs.

“Well,
we should probably start trying to make our way back down. It's a little
trickier in the dark, so I think we'll follow the regular route back. We'll
need to be careful park security doesn't spot us. The crater's supposed to be
closed by now.”

Jay
held on to Kayla's hand as they picked their way carefully around the crater.

“Watch
your step,” he cautioned. “There's a bit of loose barbed wire around here.”

They
made their way carefully in the dark, eventually reaching a bunker with a
concrete path running through it. By the light of the moon it looked like the
other war fortifications they’d seen on the way up, but better preserved.

“Here
is where we could have spent the afternoon if you wanted to be a goody
two-shoes. Any regrets?”

Kayla
peeked up at him shyly. “Nope.”

He shot
her his crooked smile, clearly still pleased with himself, before leading her along
the path and down some metal stairs. It was much quicker heading back down the
crater than it had been to climb up. Before Kayla knew it, they were climbing into
the Jeep, and heading back to her hostel.

Jay
stopped outside and killed the engine.

“Look,”
he began, clearly unsure of himself. “I don't know if you're wanting to keep
this trip a solo adventure, or what you really have planned. But there's a new
guy at work. He's desperate to pick up more shifts, so I could take a few days
off, make sure you see the islands properly.” He peered at her in the gloom of
the car, trying to read her reaction.

“Well,”
she said, pretending to hesitate.

“No
problem if you don't want to. I can just coincidentally turn up wherever you
are. I’m in need of a holiday anyway. I don't know what your itinerary is, but
I'm pretty sure mine matches yours.”

Kayla
laughed, despite her plan to make him sweat it out a little more.

“I'm
kidding, you stalker,” she giggled. “I'd love for you to come with me. I'm
heading to the Big Island in a couple of days. Does the offer still apply if it
means a plane ride?”

“Hmm,”
he said pretending to think it over, drawing out the silence until she punched
him on the arm. “Yes all right, fine, I suppose I can make that work. Although,
I've never actually been to Big Island. I'll be a tourist just like you. We
might have to pay someone else to give us tours.”

She
smiled at him. “Good, we'll be on even footing for once.”

“Can't
have that. I'd better make full use of my chance to be an expert before it
escapes me forever. Want to come snorkelling tomorrow?”

“Sure!
I want to check out Hanauma Bay while I'm here.”

“Hmm,
no,” Jay frowned. “That place was great, but these days it's been pretty much
loved to death. So many people go through there, they can't help standing on
some of the coral. It's killed a lot of it off. I know a better spot. It can be
a secret surprise for when I take you there tomorrow.”

Kayla
laughed again, and leant over to kiss him lightly on the lips.

“Fine,
dazzle me with your local knowledge tomorrow. See you then.”

Chapter Five

Sitting
down for her breakfast of papaya and pineapple the next morning, Kayla still
felt the afterglow of her time with Jay. She smiled to herself as picked a spot
at one of the hostel's long trestle tables. It was strange to think she hadn't
known he existed just a few days ago. Already she couldn't imagine the rest of
the holiday without him.

An
uncomfortable thought stirred at the back of Kayla's mind. The holiday would
end eventually. Then what? She'd just had her heart ripped apart by Danny.
Sure, he'd had his faults, but she'd seen their future together. Four years was
a long time to spend with another person. She’d adjusted her habits to his, mapped
out her future while working around his plans. Then suddenly: gone.

The
betrayal of cheating was salt in the wound. Sure, it wasn't a close friend of
hers that he'd chosen, but still someone she knew and trusted. Danny had to
have known that she'd find out eventually, but he went ahead anyway. He'd
smashed her heart to smithereens, blown apart her faith in other people. She
was only just recovering. Was now really the right time to be putting so much
energy into another guy?

Kayla pulled
a face at the thought. When was the right time, anyway? Were you supposed to
wait, and risk losing something beautiful? Or would it always be doomed if she
tried to move too quickly, build a fresh romance while still wounded from the
last?

Whether
she was ready to move on to someone else or not, eventually she'd have to go
home to New Zealand. Jay lived here, and had long term plans. That settled it.
They were already doomed. Why not enjoy the time they had together?

She
chewed her breakfast, mulling it over. She could end it now, tell him not to
bother coming with her. She’d have the rest of her holiday alone, like she'd
planned, but would have to deal with always wondering what might have been. Or
she could end it when she went home, and enjoy whatever this was until then.
Surely it would only add to the enjoyment of Hawaii? The place was so
sickeningly romantic, seeing it with someone else would surely only add to the
experience.

Besides,
the memory of his hands... Her cheeks burned at the thought of their open-air
tryst, and she glanced around the kitchen, paranoid her thoughts would be
written all over her face. Nobody had ever elicited such an immediate reaction
from her before. Jay seemed to know her body better than she did herself. He
was fun and interesting, and she wanted to understand him in the way he already
seemed to understand her.

Kayla
gulped the last of her tea and pushed her chair back, her mind made up. There
was safety in having no future with Jay. She knew where this was going, and how
it would end. Why face that end sooner than necessary?

She
would prepare herself for the moment when the sting of parting would come, then
go back to her life, ready to face the world again. Ready to face Danny if she
ever bumped into him, knowing that he'd never compare to the superhuman man
she'd met in Hawaii. The man who'd worshipped her body, told her she was
beautiful, that he wanted to make her feel good. The man who delivered on his
promise to make her feel good.

Making
a decision gave her some comfort, but it came with the cold reality that she’d still
eventually be leaving Jay behind. The twinge of sadness soon turned into a wave
of homesickness. Kayla bounced back up the hostel stairs to her room, reaching
for her phone as soon as she was inside.

The
photo she’d taken with Jay at the top of Diamond Head was still open on her
screen. It made her smile, and lit a reassuring warmth in her belly. Who could
say no to spending time with a man like that? Any trouble it caused later would
be worth it.

A sly
grin spread over her face, as she thought about how annoyed Danny would be to
see the photo. Jay was far better looking, and here they were, heads close
together, beaming into the camera, with Honolulu behind them. Without pausing
to give it a second thought, Kayla posted the picture to Facebook. Sure, it was
immature. But it felt good.

Almost
immediately, a messenger notification popped up. Tess! Kayla was suddenly
grateful for the lifeline of social media. If there was anyone who could help
clear her head right now, it was one of her oldest friends. Kayla knew she
could spill everything and rely on Tess to keep any juicy titbits to herself.

T: Who
is that DELICIOUS man you took a selfie with?

Kayla
grinned. Typical Tess, straight to the point.

K: Oh,
just some guy. The locals here are really friendly.

T:
Don't you play coy with me. That look on your face. I can practically hear you
ovulating from here. I think he's even making me ovulate.

K: He's
a tour guide. Who kindly agreed to give me a private tour.

T: Did
you pay for this tour?

K:
...no...

T: So
he wants into your pants.

Kayla
blushed. There was also no way she was lying to Tess. But out of the hot sun,
it suddenly all seemed very quick. Well, no need to tell her absolutely
everything. She hesitated, then continued tapping out a message.

K: Um,
I think he likes me, yes.

T: Next
time you run away to the islands, I'm coming with you. You clearly know how to
have a great holiday.

K: It
IS pretty great so far. I swam with turtles. And hiked Diamond Head. And today
I'm going back into the sea, snorkelling. With the same guy, actually.

T: Wow,
he really does like you! I want all the updates as soon as you have time.
Nothing is happening back here, except for some jerk new guy at work, so I have
no gossip to report. I have to live off yours, for the time being.

K: What
jerk new guy?

T: Ugh,
he’s the worst, and I don’t want to talk about him right now. I want to be
distracted by your fabulous holiday.

K: In
that case... Promise not to tell anyone?

T: Gossip!
I knew it! Tell me, I won't breathe a word.

K:
Things are getting pretty hot with Mr Muscles. I think I have a bona fide
holiday romance happening.

T: Wow!
About time. You've always been far too sensible. Who wouldn't lose their head a
bit around that guy though? Seriously, great taste. Have you kissed him yet?

K:
...yes...

T: HAVE
YOU MORE THAN KISSED HIM??

K: CALM
DOWN. And... yes...

T:
CAN'T CALM DOWN. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, YOU SCANDALOUS WOMAN.

Kayla
rolled her eyes. She should have known she wouldn’t be able to hold out on
Tess.

K: …he
has very skilled hands...

T: How
skilled?

K: Big
O skilled.

T: I
like this guy. I like this guy a lot. I've gotta go, the boss is about to start
breathing down my neck. But keep me updated! I like when you let your scandalous
side out to play. Don't chicken out. I know you'll want to, but you're just
being a chicken, don't do it.

K: Lol,
ok. Get back to work.

Kayla
flicked out of the messenger app, a broad smile on her face. The exchange with
Tess had been just what she needed. She was indulging in a holiday romance, no
more, no less. There was no need to panic and overthink things. She deserved to
have a bit of fun for once, stop being the reliable, sensible one. Now was the
time to put herself first.

As she
headed out of the hostel Kayla gave a small shiver of delight, remembering how
Jay's mouth had blazed a trail over her body. Kayla turned to head down the
main street. Now to find a bikini to wear snorkelling, and make sure he
couldn't keep his hands off her a second time.

* * * * *

The
sand on the deserted beach was blindingly white in the afternoon sun. It had
taken them a while to drive here in Jay's Jeep, but they'd turned up the radio
and sung along to cheesy Top 40 songs, and the time had flown by. Now, though,
the only sound was from the crystal clear waves curling gently onto sand.

Jay
stared at her appreciatively as she whipped her blue cotton sun dress over her
head, revealing the bikini underneath. She was particularly pleased with her
choice. It was light yellow, complementing the smallest hint of a tan that
she'd picked up in her brief time in Hawaii. Somehow, it flattered her body
more than the one-piece suits that she'd tried. Some sort of magic was
happening between the scraps of material, and she certainly wasn't complaining
about it.

Next to
her, Jay yanked his own t-shirt over his head, so he was down to just his
trunks. The thin material clung distractingly to his lean hips.
Get a grip,
stop staring
, Kayla thought to herself. Seemingly oblivious of the effect he
was having, Jay passed her one of the snorkelling masks, and started to pull
the other one over his head.

“You
just happened to have two lying around huh?” She teased. “I suppose you take
all the tour girls for a private expedition.”

Jay
rolled his eyes. “Yeah, it's really the only perk of the job. Pick the
prettiest girl on the bus, show her a good time for a few days, then wait for
the next one to roll up.”

The
comment stung unexpectedly. Kayla frowned and turned away.

“Hey!”
Jay grabbed for her, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her backwards
into him. “I'm kidding, OK? Jeez, you think I take time off work for just
anyone? I'm paid in tips, remember? I have several snorkels. I live on a boat,
sometimes I go out with friends, it's good to have a couple of spares.”

“You
live on a boat?” Kayla was both mollified by his response and distracted by the
new information.

Jay
hesitated for a fraction of a second. “Yeah, it's not mine. Some rich guy who
comes to Hawaii once in a while. He likes to have someone staying there to look
after it, take it out for a spin once in a while, blow the cobwebs out of the
system. As long as I keep it in top order, it's a free place to stay. It's a
sweet deal for me.”

This
was an unexpected turn of events. Kayla had never been on a boat before, never
mind met someone who lived on one. Jay seemed to read her mind.

“Do you
want to come see it after this? It's not just some tiny fishing boat, it's a
pretty sweet set up. This guy took the time to get the place perfect.”

“Sure,”
Kayla smiled at him. She pulled the snorkel mask on and made a face at him.
“Come on then, we dolphinately need to get going, before you put your foot in
it again.”

“Ugh,”
now it was Jay's turn to make a face. “That was an awful pun. You cod do better.”

“Mine
was Hawaii themed! We might see dolphins, there'll definitely be no cod. Get
it, we might
sea
them?”

“In the
water, woman, then at least you'll be physically prevented from running your
mouth anymore.”

Kayla
giggled and raced for the water's edge. The ocean was refreshing after the
fierce tropical heat on land, but still quite warm. She ducked her head under the
surface and kicked out towards the reef. Jay was soon beside her, and reached
out for her hand. They floated together above the coral, lightly buffeted by
waves, their fingers intertwined.

For the
first time, Kayla was distracted from the sparks she felt every time her skin
touched Jay's. Tiny fish of every colour darted between the coral, which was
just as brightly hued as the fish. Yellow and black Moorish Idol fish, green
and pink Parrotfish, tiny Yellowtail Coris. Fan coral and coral that looked
like huge mushrooms, all swaying in the waves. Her fingers itched to reach out
and touch them, but she kept her free hand tightly by her side, knowing how
easy it would be to hurt the tiny creatures.

Something
moved out of the corner of her eye, and she turned her head to see a bright
purple sea slug making its way through the haze of colour. Above it was a
similar creature, but darker, with a frill that ran around its body. Kayla felt
a brief stab of annoyance that she didn't know what all the sea animals were,
but it was so beautiful she barely cared.

A
shadow moved along the ocean floor, and Kayla turned her head again. Dark, dead
eyes and a streamlined powerful grey body was all she needed to register,
before she squealed in fright, crashing sideways into Jay. She thrust her head
above the water in a panic.

“A
shark! There's a shark right there we have to get back to shore!”

“It's OK!”
Jay grabbed her and held her still. “It's OK, calm down! It's a white tip reef
shark. It's not going to hurt you.”

“No,
you don’t understand, it’s coming right for us!”

“You’re
OK. They're sometimes curious about people and come up for a look, but you've
probably scared it after all that noise. Look, it's heading the other way now.”

Kayla
glanced behind her fearfully. The shark had indeed turned around and was
heading away from them. She felt slightly sick from the fright, adrenaline
still coursing through her veins. Sharks terrified her.
