“I want to go home.” She cried.
“You can wait in the waiting room. I’ll be back after running a few tests.” The doctor insisted, as they rolled her into the back.
“
Mitchell!!” Nevaeh screamed, as they lost grip on each other.
Mitchell
’s heart wrenched as he watched her disappear into the back. Running a hand through his hair, his heart hammered against his chest. As much as he wanted to believe his father was telling the truth, he knew better. The guy apparently loved to see Mitchell suffer in any way possible. He had even bolted, leaving him at the hospital alone. His cell phone buzzed, and he fumbled to get it out his pocket before answering it.
“Hello?” he asked
, with anxiety laced in his tone.
“What is this I’m hearing that you’re in the hospital?!” Adam asked frantically on the other end.
Sighing, Mitchell was glad to hear his best friend’s voice. He was always there when he needed him. That was one thing he was grateful for. Where others had fallen short, Adam hadn’t. He had truly been more than a best friend to Mitchell; he was more like a brother. He was one person Mitchell knew would never betray him.
“I need you to come down here.”
Mitchell pleaded.
“Already a step ahead of you.”
Adam insisted. “I’m parking now.”
Sighing relieved,
Mitchell hung up the phone, and waited. The moment Adam rushed through the emergency doors; he searched the room for Mitchell. He was relieved to see him unharmed. Rushing over to him, he hugged him quickly.
“I called you like a billion time
s! Why didn’t you answer or call me back?!” Adam barked.
“
Nevaeh’s still pregnant.” Mitchell blurted out, completely ignoring his question.
That made Adam’s jaw drop.
Mitchell didn’t hesitate to fill him in on the drama that was his life. After hearing everything, Adam sat infuriated. Time was ticking by slowly, and they both had been waiting impatiently. They’d both bugged the receptionist at the desk dozens of time, but there was still no answer. Sitting in the waiting area, they continued to talk.
“So, you’re not one hundred percent sure yet? You’re just going by your father’s word?” Adam questioned.
“Why would he lie about her being pregnant? He doesn’t even want me with her.” Mitchell answered candidly.
“
I don’t know. The guy’s an asshole.” Adam bit, as the doctor sauntered over to them.
Mitchell
stood, and waited to hear the results of everything. Mitch’s palms were sweaty, and he was so nervous that he could barely stand, but he did anyway. Hospitals always made him somber because the very few times he was in them, he’d lost someone.
Chapter Twenty Two
“Ms. Sky is in fact pregnant.” The doctor replied, and Mitch’s heart did a tiny dance. It was the best thing he’d heard all day.
“Is she ok? Are
they
ok?” he asked quickly, noting the baby now.
“Fine, but she’s dehydrated
, which isn’t good for her or the baby. She hasn’t been eating, which is why she fainted. We’re going to keep her overnight to monitor her, but she’s healthy. We have her on an IV for the moment.” Dr. Tan responded.
“Can I go be with her?”
Mitch asked.
“Of course, she’s asking for you.” Dr. Tan smiled brightly.
Following her to the back, he couldn’t wait to see Nevaeh. Stopping at her room, he took in a deep breath before going in. Mitchell was just hoping that she wouldn’t hate him after everything. Strolling into the room, he saw her looking up at the TV. He was happy to see her up and very lucid. She’d scared him to death when she collapsed.
“Hey.” She smiled.
“Hi.” He said, walking over to her. “How are you feeling?”
“Confused, but happy to know I didn’t lose the baby.” She whispered
, hoping he would be happy to hear the news.
“She told you?” he
asked relieved, and Nevaeh nodded.
“You know?” she asked
, a bit relieved herself. She thought she was going to have to tell him, and that was a conversation she didn’t want to have.
“I know.” He smiled brightly.
“Are you—pissed at me?” she asked hesitant.
“Why would I be pissed at you?” he asked frowning. “If memory serves
me correct, I helped you make that miracle.” He smiled.
“
I don’t know what I’m going to do now.” She whispered, looking down.
“Say you’ll come home and stay with me.
Permanently.” He demanded.
“But you just left your fiancée.” She replied looking up to him.
“Because I didn’t love her.” Mitchell said, grabbing Nevaeh’s hand.
“
Mitchell—”
“We don’t have to be together, that’s not what I’m asking.” He said clearly. “I just want to make sure you
, and that baby of ours is safe. I don’t want to miss another moment of your pregnancy.” He said, squeezing her hand and sitting beside her.
Wrapping his arm around her, he took his other hand and touched her belly. Laying her head on is shoulder, she felt safe in his arms.
“After everything I’ve said to you, you still want me?” she whispered.
“I’m in love with you Nevaeh, and nothing’s changed that.”
He said truthfully. “But I’m not pressuring you to jump into a relationship with me. I know you don’t want that.”
“I never said I didn’t want that.” She replied
, staring into his eyes.
Staring at her, he had to contain himself. His emotions were still raw, but he wanted nothing more than to kiss her. Scaring her off wasn’t an option.
A sudden tapping on the door startled both of them. Looking up, they saw Adam leaning on the door frame, still dressed in his suit for the wedding. He had a huge smile on his face as he glared at both of them.
“So
, this is where the party is?” he asked, before walking into the room. Walking to the bed, he hugged Nevaeh before flashing that perfect smile at her.
“So by the looks of things, we’re all good in here?” Adam asked.
“If Nevaeh says yes, then we will be.” Mitchell insisted.
“Yes to what?” Adam asked nervously.
He sure as hell hoped that Mitchell wasn’t trying to rush into another marriage. For Christ sakes, he had just walked out on one.
“For her to move in with me, don’t worry
Adam I’m not asking her to marry me or anything.” Mitchell replied, putting his best friend at ease.
“So
, am I going to be an uncle or what?” Adam smiled brightly.
“My answer is
yes, to both of you.” Nevaeh responded.
Mitchell
glared at the sky, and watched the stars twinkle. For the first time in his life he was actually content. The cool air felt good against his skin, as he stood there. He suddenly felt a hand on his shoulder, and spun around.
“She’s waiting for you.” Adam smiled.
“Alright.” Mitchell replied, following him over to the pink and white table full of gifts.
Nevaeh was sitting in a big wicker chair
, beside the table. She was wearing a beautiful white gown and a crown that read, “Mommy to be”. Her stomach was huge, and there was no doubt she was ready to have the baby. Walking over to her, Mitchell knelt and kissed her before rubbing her ever growing belly gently. It had been six and a half months since they’d heard the good news about her pregnancy.
“I think we should cut the cake now.” She smiled.
“Anything you want sweetie. I think you should start opening the gifts now too.” He smiled back.
They were having the baby shower
, and both of their friends, and a few of his family members were there. He had everything set up properly, on the beach behind his house. Nevaeh had already graduated early, and she was going to be starting her semester in culinary school after the baby was born. Chef Goutier had already been teaching her the things she needed to know. He had no doubt she would be a head chef in no time, in fact he had a space for her at his restaurant.
Mitchell
kissed Nevaeh again, before telling the waiters to start serving the cake. Since finding out Nevaeh was still pregnant, things had completely changed. She’d moved in permanently as she promised to, and he didn’t let anyone come between them. She and the baby meant the world to him, and he had done everything to ensure they were safe. Nevaeh didn’t want for anything, and Mitchell made it to every doctor’s appointment she had. When they had the sonogram to find out what they were having, he was over the moon happy with joy.
As far as it came to their relationship, they’d taken their time, but gravitated towards each other. There was no logical reason for them to be apart
, and both of them knew that. So, with nothing else standing in their way, they fell even deeper in love. Grabbing a present from the table, Adam handed it to Nevaeh, and she gladly tore it open as everyone watched in suspense.
Mitchell
watched, as her face lit up at seeing the present. He smiled, as his cell phone buzzed. Taking it out of his pocket, he saw that he had a text message. Reading it, he went flush before shoving the phone back in his pocket. Gritting his teeth, he knelt over to Nevaeh.
“I need to go get something.” He whispered in her ear
, as Adam handed her another gift.
“Hurry back
, please.” She insisted, kissing him again.
“
Will do.” He answered, before disappearing into the house.
Walking passed the living room and kitchen; he ended up at his front door. Opening the door, he saw his father standing there. Glaring up at him,
he couldn’t believe the nerve he had to show up to his house unannounced.
“What are you doing here?” he asked through gritted teeth.
“I wanted to see my son, and—”
“I told you
, I never wanted to see you again.” Mitchell barked.
“Yeah, I’m hoping you’d change your mind about that.”
“There’s not a chance in hell.” Mitchell answered.
“Look, you’re a better man than I ever was or will be, and you know that’s hard for me to admit. Don’t let what I did change you.” Bruce acknowledged.
“I have no intention of letting it.” He grumbled.
“Good, I
’m hoping one day, you could do what I struggled to do, and forgive me. I have a present for Nevaeh.” He insisted pulling out an envelope.
“You’re not seeing her. You can’t just drop by, I told you—”
“I sent you a text message.” he said jokingly, but Mitchell didn’t smile. “Fine, here.” Bruce said handing the envelope to him.
“
What is it?” Mitchell asked.
“Put it in a safe place. It’s a trust fund I started for my granddaughter. When she’s born, there will be a million dollars added. Ever year that she gets older
, it’ll go up. One million when she’s one, two million when she’s two…you get the gest.” Bruce answered.
Mitchell
stood speechless, as he stared at his father. That was the last thing he’d expected from him. He had been trying to reach out to him for the past few months, but Mitchell ignored him. This just wasn’t what he expected for their reunion.
“Thanks.”
Mitchell muttered, flabbergasted.
“Don’t thank me, it’s something I should’ve been doing all my life. Hopefully one day
, I can meet her when you’re ready. Bruce said optimistic. “I guess this is bye. You know how to find me when you’re ready.” Bruce said walking off.
Closing the door,
Mitchell sucked in a breath as he gathered himself. A moment later, he felt a hand slip into his. Spinning around, he saw Nevaeh standing there.
“What’s taking you so long?” she asked
, looking up into his eyes.
