His erection brushed the backs of
her fingers before she adjusted and wrapped her fingers around him,
stroking gently. He moaned against her mouth and broke the
kiss.

"Are you crazy?" he asked, but
didn't attempt to move away from her touch.

"Not as a rule. But what was it you
said?" She mangled his earlier Japanese phrase. "You're fun to play
around with."

"Much more of that and we won't be
playing."

"Come on, you have better control
than that," she teased. "And when was the last time someone had her
hand down your pants on a public beach?"

"It was you, wasn't it?
Yesterday?"

She laughed and kissed him again,
tasting the desperation in his kiss. She gave him a final squeeze
and released him, easing her hand out of his pants. He drew back,
breathing heavily. "You want to make love outside? I know just the
place."

***

The motorcycle did nothing to ease
the throb between her legs as he guided the machine through the
streets of his neighborhood.

"Your backyard?" she asked as she
handed him her helmet.

"Sort of. Something I've wanted to
do for awhile now." He took her hand and led her up the walk to the
house. Instead of going in the front door, though, he took her
around the side and into the backyard, then up on the deck. He sat
on the woven hammock strung between the house and the deck post,
and motioned for her to join him. When she approached, he guided
her so that she straddled his lap, then he lay back on the pillow,
pulling her over him.

"Will it hold up?" she asked
nervously, looking over her shoulder to the rope and eye-screw that
held it to the house.

"Who the hell knows? I need to be
inside you, Elizabeth."

The words made her wetter. She
wriggled out of her panties while he struggled to dig his condom
out of his wallet.

"Leave the dress on," he managed as
he rolled the condom on. "All day I've wanted to lift your skirt
and put my dick in you."

She moaned softly at the effect of
the words. Her pussy and nipples tightened. Then she reached
between them for his cock and guided it to her channel. Though she
was desperate to have him fill her, she took him in a little at a
time, savoring the stretch of her flesh around him.

"God, you fit me perfectly," she
murmured, adjusting to the position, aware he was holding his
breath as he waited for her to move.

She was completely in control. She
rose, her knees on either side of his hips, the bulk of the cargo
pants fabric against her ankles, and she began to ride him. The
hammock swayed a little wildly until he put out his hand to steady
them against the deck rail. Once the hammock wasn't bucking beneath
them, she gained confidence and moved harder, faster, taking him
deep, savoring the slick sound of his cock sliding in and out of
her, of his grunts of approval and moans of pleasure. He tweaked
her nipple through the fabric of her dress, then reached behind her
to loosen the hook, so the bodice pooled in her lap.

She hesitated. “I hope none of your
neighbors are watching.”

“So what if they are? You’re
beautiful.” He cupped both her breasts in his hands and used his
leg on the deck as leverage to surge up into her, meeting her
thrusts, making the hammock sway and lurch. She couldn’t meet his
thrusts, so just held onto his shoulders as he rammed into
her.

“Jesus, I’m close. Are you
close?”

She shook her head. “It feels good,
but—”

He nodded, then with incredible
strength, lifted her, dropping her onto her back. He slid free from
her body, flipped up her skirt and covered her pussy with his
mouth.

She screamed, and felt him laugh
against her sensitive flesh before his tongue stroked up over her
slit, stroking her clit, flicking it, before dipping into her
channel. She gasped and curled her fingers into his hair, holding
him to her as he repeated the caresses with the flat of his tongue.
She rolled her hips against his mouth, searching for the relief he
was offering, and then he sat back on his knees.

“Close now?”

“Oh, my God, you are evil,” she
groaned.

He only laughed and thrust into
her, hard, again and again, his groin slamming against her swollen
clit. She struggled to match his tempo, to find the orgasm that
eluded her. Then he cupped his hands under her ass, lifting her,
and—

Vaguely she was aware of her moans
floating across the backyard as her entire body tightened around
him, then released, sending bits of her consciousness flying in all
directions like the stars in the sky above. Her nails dug into his
shoulder through his shirt as she anchored herself to him, as the
orgasm pulsed through her. She felt the ripples of his own climax
inside her, and then he collapsed over her, bringing both legs into
the hammock and pulling her against his side.

“Perfect,” he murmured, and in a
few minutes, his breathing evened out.

Chapter Seven

“Of course today I brought nothing
for my walk of shame.” Elizabeth stretched for the millionth time
since she’d awakened in the hammock, sprawled over Sullivan’s
chest. “And my dress is a mess.” The skirt had been wadded between
them all night.

He tossed her a t-shirt. “Just wear
this. People will think you have a bathing suit underneath, and
we’re heading to the water anyway, as soon as you get your suit
from your room.”

She held up the faded shirt with
his school mascot, a surfer, naturally. She imagined the soft
fabric snug against his chest, and tugged it over her head. “It’s a
little short.”

He grinned. “Looks great to
me.”

She pushed at his chest when he
slid his hands down over her ass. “You’re insatiable.”

“First complaint I’ve
heard.”

“And last,” she
admitted, when he trailed soft kisses along her throat.

They didn’t get out on the water
for another hour, and when they did, Elizabeth’s legs were shaky.
She had trouble getting up on the board, and fell again and again.
Sullivan set his board in the sand and came onto her board behind
her.

“Let’s paddle out farther,” he
suggested when she looked over her shoulder at him.

“It’s your fault I suck today. You
drained all my energy.” She sent a little splash toward
him.

He retaliated by dribbling water
down her spine, which made her shriek.

“Here’s good,” he said, guiding
the board into a favorable spot. “When I say go, you go,
alright?”

She nodded, tension tightening her
body as she scanned the water for a swell.

“Here. Come on.
Paddle!”

She lowered herself over the board
and did as he told her, her arms moving in rhythm with his. When
they were in position, he urged her to rise. She stayed on the
board this time, knowing if she gave into the need to bail, she’d
dump him, too, and he’d miss the wave. She was wobbly but let the
water propel the board, extending her hands to keep her balance.
His fingertips touched hers and a thrill went through her as they
rode the wave together.

Once the wave was spent, she
lowered herself to the board as he’d shown her. “Again.”

They rode a half dozen more waves,
bailing twice, before Sullivan’s alarm went off.

“We’d better go in. Your friends
will be looking for us.”

She turned to face him on the
board. “One more run.”

He grinned and scooped her hair
back from her face. “You’ve got it bad.”

She scooted toward him and nipped
his chin with her teeth. “Yes, I do.”

He gripped her hips and slid her
closer, lowering himself over her until the surfboard was a bed
beneath them, and all the good parts were lined up just right. He
kissed her, long and sweet, until she felt him grow hard, then he
sat up, making the surfboard wobble.

“What is it with
you and unsteady surfaces?” she teased, sitting up with his
assistance.

“I like to test my balance. If we
go on another run, we won’t have time to shower.”

“We can use the showers on the
beach.”

He cocked his head. “Those are just
to rinse the sand and salt off.”

“I know.”

“Then let’s go for another
run.”

“What’s this? Going native?” Haven
traced the strap of Elizabeth’s bathing suit under the tank top
Elizabeth had pulled on.

“What do you mean?” The four of
them strolled down the street of a charming little town on the
North Shore, stopping at the market-like booths that held jewelry,
glassware and textiles. Elizabeth’s bag was already half-filled
with beautiful mementos of her trip.

“It looks like you’re ready to
jump into the water at the drop of a hat, like the
locals.”

“We took a little longer on the
surf lesson than we’d planned. We didn’t take much time to get
dressed.”

Haven dipped her head and looked
back at Sullivan, who was a few booths back, studying some metal
art. “So you’re having fun?”

“I am, and I’m sorry I’ve
abandoned you—”

“You haven’t. You’ve been here
with us for all of it except last night.”

“What did you do last night?”
Elizabeth picked up a silver necklace and put it back
down.

“Not much. We went to dinner and
then Jace took us to do karaoke.”

“Oh, my God. Joslyn didn’t do ‘I
Will Always Love You,’ did she?”

“Of course, and we all did ‘Lady
Marmalade’ and ‘Love Shack.’ And I did ‘Sin Wagon.’”

Elizabeth stopped and turned to her
friend. “How drunk were you?”

“Pretty damned.” Haven rubbed her
head. “Was just as glad to get a late start today. I talked to Eric
until three.”

“Is he missing you
yet?”

“I had to talk him out of flying
out here. We’ll be home in a couple of days. And he should get used
to it, if he’s going to be traveling all around after we’re
married. I said I’d go with him in the summer but the rest of the
time I have to be at work.”

A long-distance marriage. Despite
herself, Elizabeth looked back at Sullivan. If her friends could
make it work…

Who was she kidding? She’d told him
last night that she didn’t take time off from work. There was no
way she could come see him every other month or so. No, she was
romanticizing a fling. That was only going to get her
hurt.

“Hey.” Sullivan came up behind
her. “Hold up your hair.”

She frowned, but gathered it and
glanced over her shoulder at him. He looped something around her
neck, something that fell cool against her skin. She looked down at
a silver necklace with a charm. She lifted the charm—a surfboard.
His warm fingers clasped the necklace and then he pressed a kiss to
the back of her neck. She dropped her hair and looked up at him as
he linked his fingers through hers.

Then she sent a panicked glance at
Haven, who watched them speculatively.

Oh, God. She was in
trouble.

After an afternoon of shopping,
Sullivan took them to the beach. White sand stretched before them,
but unlike Waikiki, no one waded in the shallows. Looking beyond,
at the tall tumbling waves, Elizabeth could see why. The water was
violent and powerful.

And there were surfers out
there.Elizabeth cringed when one took a pretty nasty
tumble.

“Have you ever surfed here?” she
asked Sullivan.

“When I was younger. This beach is
what made my mom want to move to Hawaii. This is the famous
Pipeline. My mom would surf here every day, even after she was
diagnosed. She loved the challenge of it. I would lifeguard here
back in high school and college.” He shook his head. “Saw some bad
accidents. Made me decide I didn’t want to be a surfer after
all.”

“Those waves are
huge!” Joslyn said in awe, easing closer to Elizabeth.

“There’s a big reef under the
surface. Lava spires, too. Can cut you up pretty good. My mom got a
hundred stitches on her leg one time. Lucky she didn’t break
it.”

“Your mom sounds
really cool,” Bailey said with a sigh.

“She was.”

But something in his voice made
Elizabeth look at him, and she saw something that made her think he
thought otherwise. Or maybe he just missed her.

They sat on the tablecloth Joslyn
spread out and unwrapped the snacks they’d bought at the market.
They watched the waves and the surfers . It was hypnotic, really,
the crash of waves, the power of the water. Elizabeth found herself
holding her breath, as if her stillness would help a surfer catch
the wave.

Beside her, Sullivan twined his
fingers through hers. It was the most casual gesture, but Elizabeth
couldn’t stop herself from looking at their joined hands, his
tanned skin against hers. She’d never been one for public displays
of affection, but the way he did it was so…natural.
Nice.
