Chapter One

I step out of the cab, grab my bags, and just stand there staring at the house before me in my favorite pair of jeans and a t-shirt that has seen better days.
This is bigger than I thought it was going to be
. I hear music coming from inside the house, but I’m not familiar with the song that’s playing. I really didn’t listen to a lot of music back home.
Since this is my new home, do I knock or do I just go in? I wonder if they’re expecting me. I don’t want to scare anyone if I just walk in.
Closing the distance between me and the front door, I release my grip on one bag, turn the handle, and open the door. The music is even louder now, so I doubt anyone can hear me walk in. I set the first bag down, just inside the door, and reach back for the second one, but when I bring it forward, it hits the door, causing it to fly open and slam into the wall. There is no way that wasn’t heard, and I’m right when the music suddenly dies down. Three girls come running around the corner almost slamming right into me before they can stop.

“Shit,” one says, but I can’t figure out which one it was. They regain their composure. “You must be Haley. I’m Samantha, but you can call me Sam. This is Jenny and Kaylee,” Sam says, pointing to each of the girls as she introduces them. I’m a little thrown due to the fact that they all three have on very tight t-shirts and very short shorts. I’m not used to seeing girls in such things.

I’m so fucking nervous right now. They actually look happy to see me. I put on a smile and nod. “Yes, I’m Haley. I take it you were expecting me?” I look at each one of them. Even though I’m nervous as hell, I’m also excited beyond belief.

“Well, come on in,” Sam says, reaching over and grabbing ahold of one of my suitcases. “We’ll show you the upstairs and let you pick out a room.” Her and the other two turn and head for the stairs. I grab the other suitcase and follow.

Let me pick out a room? How big is this place?
We make our way up the stairs, the girls each taking turns to tell me whose room is where, showing me one of the bathrooms, closets, and everything else in between. They stop at one room and let me take a look around before ushering me to the next, stopping at three rooms in total. Each room had two beds, so that means I would, in fact, be rooming with someone.

“Jenny and I share a room, and Kaylee has her own right now. The guys’ rooms are down the hall a bit.”

I halt dead in my tracks when I hear that. “Guys?” I cut Sam off before she can finish.

Sam chuckles a little. “Yeah, we’re co-ed, but don’t worry, the guys are really nice. They’re not home much anyway.”

Well, that should ease my mind, but it doesn’t. This is just my first day, and I’ve already been thrown for a loop. “Okay.” Am I really okay with this? It’s not like I have anywhere else to go right now, so I better just suck it up and deal with it. “Kaylee, is it okay if I just share with you?” Kaylee seems like a nice enough person; after all, I usually go with my gut on first impressions.

Kaylee smiles wide. “Absolutely. Come on…my room’s down this way.”

We all continue down the hall just a bit and turn into the room…which is
huge
. “Wow.” That’s all I’m able to say at this point.

Kaylee comes bouncing around me, reminding me of Tigger. “I know, right. This is your bed over here.” She goes and stands next to my bed. “Your closet is over there.” She points off to the side where my closet is. I can hear the other girls moving in past me, bringing my suitcase up, and placing it on my bed. “There’s a dresser, too.” She bounces around some more and goes and flops down on her bed.

“Since there are so many of us who share this house, there are four full bathrooms. We try to give each other their privacy, but there are times when one of us will come in while the other showers to put on our make-up…things like that,” she states, like it’s no big deal. Having someone walk in on me while I’m in the shower is definitely something I’m not used to.

I can hear her talking, but I’m not really listening to what she’s saying. I’m still in awe at the size of this room. From the street, the house looks like an average two-story home. You can’t tell how long this house is, or the fact that the inside is huge. I’ve always had a twin bed, but the bed that is before me is a full, if not a queen.

“Do you want to unpack now or later? We can give you a tour of the rest of the house and out back?” Sam asks. Since she’s the one doing most of the talking, I’m assuming that she is the leader of the three of them.

I turn around, finding Sam waiting patiently for my answer. “Umm…I’ll unpack for a bit and then you can show me around, if that’s okay.”

“Sure. Come on, Jenny. Let’s give Haley some space. She’s had a long day. Kaylee…are you coming down or are you gonna stay with Haley?”

Kaylee waves her hand at the girls. “I’ll wait for her. Don’t want her to get lost on her first day.”

I can feel Kaylee’s eyes on me as I walk around my bed, stand in front of my suitcase, and start to unload it. “Shit.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I didn’t bring any hangers.”

Kaylee bounds off her bed and goes to her closet, grabbing a few extra hangers then brings them over to me. “Here, this should help until you can get some. I think that Steph left some in the closet when she moved out.” She turns and opens my closet, and there are, in fact, several hangers in there.

“Thanks,” I say as she lays several hangers on my bed beside my suitcase.

Kaylee walks around to the other side of my bed and sits down, making herself at home. “So, where did you come from?”

I thought I would have a few minutes by myself, but she wants to get to know me. “Utah.”

“Ahh…I’m from Oregon. I take it you got a scholarship.”

It was more of statement rather than a question. How the hell did she know I got a scholarship? I must have given her a weird look.

“Everyone that lives here got a scholarship of one kind or another,” she replies.

Hearing that makes me feel a little better. I’m not the only geek living at this house; although not one of these girls looks like a geek. They’re all beautiful. I kind of feel like the ugly duckling. I’m not model thin with my curves.

Kaylee doesn’t move the entire time I unpack. We carry on an easy conversation, asking questions back and forth, just getting to know each other. After all, we are going to be spending a lot of time together. I had mentioned that I was looking for some place to work until school started, and she had named off a few places that I should be able to get a job at.

I finish with one suitcase and put it in my closet, hefting the other up on my bed and start unpacking it as well. I follow her to the bathroom, so she can show me where I can put my stuff. She explains that they all take turns buying supplies each month, and if I would like to do that, I can, or if I prefer to use my own, I can do that as well. It just seems to save everyone a bit of money. I didn’t think it sounded too bad, myself. She shows me where the media room is, laundry room, a very small library, and the dining room. The voices that I heard a little bit ago are becoming clearer when we walk around the corner, leading us to the kitchen, and I nearly trip over my own two feet when I see who’s sitting there.

“Guys, this is Haley. She just got here a bit ago, so be nice.” Kaylee steps out of the way so she’s not blocking the view of the three most gorgeous guys I have ever laid eyes on.

One by one they each say, “Hi Haley.” They all smile and wait for my reply…only…I can’t talk. I can’t find my tongue. The words won’t form.

Kaylee leans over toward my ear and whispers, “Close your mouth, dear. They’re just guys.”

They may be ‘just guys’, but they are guys without shirts on. They’re ‘guys’ like I’ve never seen before.
Damn!
I snap my mouth shut and smile at them, finding some sort of strength. “Hi.” And give a little wave. Kaylee ushers me over to the other side of the island so we are now standing directly in front of them.

“This is Liam, Zach, and Brendon.” She points to each of them as she introduces. One by one, they each reach out their hand to shake mine, all saying ‘nice to meet you’. Everyone seems so nice.

I’m a little embarrassed by my appearance. I’m in the same clothes that I’ve worn all day long on that damn bus. I probably smell. I should have taken a shower before I even thought of coming down.

“You guys ready to go out back?” Liam speaks up, taking a second to look at all of us to see if we’re going to respond.

Zach and Brendon agree and rise up out of their chairs. Kaylee grabs my hand and starts pulling me toward the back door, since I have yet to reply. When we take the last few steps and my feet land on the deck, I’m once again shocked at what the backyard holds.
It’s a fucking pool, for God’s sake.

“Haley?” Hearing my name causes me to turn, and I see Brendon standing in front of me. “You okay?”

“Uh…yeah. I’ve just never seen anything like this before.” And I really haven’t.

I can hear him chuckle a little. “Did you not ever go out back home?”

If they only knew. “You could say that.” What else am I going to say? It’s not like I’m going to spill my sob story the first day and tell them what a shitty life I had. I moved here to get away from all of that. I take a few steps further out on the deck and take in my surroundings. The deck is big and leads down to the patio, which leads to the pool. There are deck chairs and small tables all over the place. I’m thankful that there isn’t anyone else around at the moment. I can’t imagine what my face looks like as I take in everything.

“Did you bring a suit, Haley?” Jenny asks as she walks by, grabbing a beer out of the refrigerator.
Refrigerator?

Remembering that she actually asked me something, “Ahh…no.”

“You can borrow one of mine, if you want.”

I give her a grateful smile. “Thanks, but maybe later.”

Jenny walks back by me, handing me a beer in the process, then goes and takes a seat. She gives me a questionable look when she sees that I haven’t opened my beer yet. “Never had a beer before?”

That seems to get everyone’s attention as I can feel all eyes on me now. “Nope. I’ve never drank before.”

“Seriously?” Brendon says.

“Seriously,” I mumble back. Apparently, there’s a lot that I haven’t done that they have. I have a lot to learn.

“Leave her alone, Brendon. She doesn’t have to drink if she doesn’t want to,” Kaylee says. “Relax, Haley. Come over and sit down.” She waves her hand, beckoning me to come over and sit by her. Might as well join the party.

I walk over, sit down by Kaylee, and open my beer, cautiously taking my first sip of an alcoholic drink. It has somewhat of a bitter taste to it, but that seems to disappear with the next drink I take.

“Slow down. You’re going to be drunk in no time flat if you keep drinking it like that,” Kaylee says while reaching over and grabbing my arm while I’m in the process of raising the bottle back up to my lips, causing the amber liquid to miss my mouth and spill onto my shirt. I wipe my mouth, then brush what I can off, but realize that it’s too late when I feel how cold it is against my skin. I look up and see the guys watching me, so I look down to see what they are looking at and notice that my nipples are now very erect. I cross my arms and cover my chest as best I can and meet their eyes again head on. A smile splays across all three of their faces before they turn away. I know I’m blushing. I can feel my cheeks heat up with embarrassment.

I look over and see Kaylee grab the hem of her shirt, raising it up over her head then tossing it off to the side. She’s trying to get the attention off me and onto her and for that I’m thankful.

“Now, that’s what I’m talking about.” By the sound of his voice, I’m pretty sure that was Liam.

Kaylee doesn’t reply. She just lays back and takes in the rays that are beating down on her half naked body, and I can’t seem to stop staring at her. The small triangles attached to the strings of her top are barely covering her nipples, which are also hard and look like they are trying to cut their way through the fabric. The splashing in the water is what finally causes me to return my eyes to the pool.

I take a few more drinks of my beer and set it down on the table beside me. “I think I’m gonna go in and take a shower; maybe rest a bit. Is there any particular time you guys eat dinner or just whenever?”

Kaylee waves her hand up in the air. “Whenever we get hungry is when we eat.”

I make my way inside and up to my room, thankful that I’m going to have at least a little while by myself to take in everything. It was all just a little overwhelming, and now I need some me time.
