“I don’t see a light switch,” Ben announced.
“Here. By the front door,” Zoey told him. “The power isn’t on,” she added after flipping the switch and staring up at the small chandelier hanging inside the front door.
“He isn’t here,” Greg said, his tone solemn when he wrapped his arm around his wife. “Remember, Micah Jones, as well as Micah Mulligan, is dead. Bounty collected, end of story.”
“What about this?” Zoey held up the small baby rattle.
The four of them stood in the large empty living room and stared out the window that faced the front of the house.
“Micah is sending a message,” Haley said, nodding to the rattle that Zoey still held up for all of them to see. “And it appears, it’s a boy.”
“Going to be a boy,” Zoey decided, grinning at the rattle. “We just saw Maggie six months ago. Maybe she was pregnant, but I think she hasn’t yet given birth.”
“Another Mulligan,” Greg mused.
Haley hugged him and cuddled in next to Greg. “Micah is dead. But you never know who might show up to learn from you at this school. Everything happens for a reason.”
No one said anything. All four of them continued staring at the darkness outside. Tomorrow would be another day, and all of them were far from their golden years. The pursuit would keep the four of them looking forward to the next day; make that the six of them.
