Details: Three gunmen with automatic weapons sprayed Borja's vehicle with bullets as he left his home and was about to enter an avenue crowded with rush hour traffic. Borja's bodyguards returned fire. A female street vendor was killed, and Borja, his driver, and one of his bodyguards were wounded. The gunmen fled in a car, and police found it, along with the body of one assassin. Borja was shot in the shoulder and right leg, and a bullet grazed his head. He had received a series of death threats.

Details: Ordzhonikidze was on his way to work at City Hall in rush hour traffic, when two masked gunmen opened fired on his car, blowing out the windows, severely wounding him and killing his driver. The gunmen fired from both sides of the street, using assault rifles equipped with silencers, and put 26 bullet holes in the car.

to swearing-in ceremony, riding in an armored four-wheel-drive vehicle, when FARC guerillas sprayed the vehicle with automatic weapons fire and forced it to stop. Turbay, his mother, and three bodyguards were forced to get out of the vehicle, and then they were executed.

Details: Trusted presidential bodyguard Rashidi Kasereka, entered the White House reception room, leaned over Kabila as if he was going to speak to him, then pulled out his service revolver and shot Kabila once in the neck and twice in the abdomen at pointblank range, wounding him. Retreating, Kasereka fired two more shots into Kabila's stomach. Other bodyguards rushed into the room and started shooting at Kasereka, hitting him in the leg. He fell, and they shot him two more times, killing him. Kabila died a few days later.

Details: Martinez was descending the stairs from his office in the state capitol. Former state police officer Victoria Loya pulled a .32 revolver out of her purse and shot Martinez, grazing his head but not killing him. She was quickly taken into custody. She had been fired from her police job four years ago for trying to shoot her husband, and reportedly suffered from mental problems.

Location: Baldia Town, Pakistan
Details: Qadri's vehicle was reportedly ambushed by a team of six assassins, riding three motorbikes. The gunmen sprayed the van on three sides when it slowed down due to a speed-breaker. Qadri, two relatives, his driver, a bodyguard, and a policeman stationed nearby were killed. Three others were wounded, including his six-year-old son and eight-year-old nephew. One of the assailants was also killed when the wounded police guard of Qadri returned fire. The assailants then drove away. Qadri had been provided with four guards, but he had taken only one of them with him, leaving the rest at his residence.

Details: At 8:30 a.m., when Pedraza stepped from his apartment building, a 4-1/2 lb. bomb in a knapsack strapped to a bicycle was detonated by remote control. The blast blew the facade off the building, and injured 15, including Pedraza, who had serious burns on most of his body. The ETA was blamed. He did not have a bodyguard.

Details: Mugica died when a bomb attached to the underside of his van exploded as he started the engine shortly before 10 a.m. The terrorist group ETA was blamed. Another van he owned was charred in an arson attack in August 2000, and threatening graffiti had been spray painted on his home, his shop, and the headquarters of his party.

Details: A gunman on a motorcycle shot Paternina twice as she was returning home from work. She was investigating allegations of state complicity in a massacre involving paramilitary gunmen. Two of her colleagues in the investigation had disappeared in June 2001 and were feared dead.

Target: Northern Alliance Leader Ahmad Shah Massoud
Location: Khoja-Bahaudeen, Afghanistan
Details: Two al-Qaeda terrorists, posing as Belgium reporters, were granted an interview with Massoud. Their camera contained a powerful bomb. It was the same camera they had used to interview other Northern Alliance officials over the preceding months to gain Massoud's trust. During the interview, they triggered the bomb, killing Massoud and one assassin, and wounding the other assassin and Massoud's top man. The injured assassin was machine-gunned to death as he fled the building. Massoud died in his MI-8 helicopter
en route
to the hospital in Dushanbe. The killing of Massoud had been engineered months in advance by Osama bin Laden, and took place two days before the 9/11 attacks in America.
