He checked on Short, who had shown no signs of improvement, but also no signs of getting worse.

Then, the ambulance took a very sharp corner and he found himself desperately trying to grab hold of something before falling head first onto the ambulance floor. The only thing he managed to grab hold of was the nurse’s arm and he soon found himself almost nose-to-nose with her.

But to his disbelief, he saw a contorted face full of anger and hate.

Within a split second, he could felt the nurse’s hand tightly gripping around his neck, quickly squeezing harder and harder until it was unable to take any more pressure.

Her nails dug into his neck and slowly carved away at the skin until his throat was revealed and with one easy pull, the nurse ripped it out from inside his neck.

CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

As the sun began to rise higher and higher, the ambulance carrying Short and the nurse was turning into the hospital grounds, ready to pull up in its bay outside the accident and emergency department ready to deliver their patients to the care of the hospital staff.

The ambulance driver had continued his journey completely oblivious of what had happened in the back and little did he know that his colleague was now lying on the floor of the ambulance with his throat ripped out, taking in his last gasps of air.

But the nurse who had inflicted the fatal injury was crouched over her prey, waiting patiently for the moment when the ambulance door would open so she could jump out.

But as she waited, she noticed Short on the stretcher beside her, completely oblivious to what had gone on.

Short’s face had a bit of dried blood on it from when he fell and the nurse moved her hand down his face in the hope that some would rub off on her fingers for her to taste.

But as her hand reached the bottom of Short’s neck, she saw the accentuating veins on his neck which made her crave Short’s blood even more.

And just as she was about to turn her attention towards feeding on Short, the nurse suddenly felt a sudden sharp pain running through her fingers, almost as if she was touching something extremely hot and she pulled her hand away immediately.

She looked down at her hand and was shocked to see what had caused her pain – her index and middle fingers both had scorch marks on them which when placed together, formed some sort of a cross.

The nurse looked over towards Short and noticed a gold chain around his neck – attached to which was a beautiful gold crucifix.

The heat that emitted from the nurse’s hand when she touched the crucifix must have been incredible and if Short had been conscious, would have caused him a bit of distress.

Clearly visible on Short’s neck was a burn mark in the shape of the crucifix – a mark that would forever remain as a reminder of how lucky Short was to be alive right now.

Because the back doors to the ambulance suddenly opened to reveal the full extent of the horrific event that took place within it to the ambulance driver and a doctor who had joined him.

The nurse inside leapt from inside and easily pushed the two men aside before running out of the hospital grounds so quickly that neither the ambulance driver or the doctor could even alert security of what had happened.

But Short was miraculously no different from when he had been put inside the ambulance and they quickly got him out of the ambulance and into the hospital as fast as possible for urgent medical help – and also to get indoors in case the manic nurse who had leapt from it returned and attacked them.

The morning air was beginning to echo with the sound of police sirens as police cars were responding to call outs all over the town. Amongst them were cars heading towards the main road where the coroner’s and also to the local mortuary where there had been a frantic call to the emergency services reporting the dead coming back to life.

There were not enough cars to deal with the incredibly strange situations that were suddenly breaking out around the normally quiet town.

Ironically, as the police cars were speeding off towards the places where dead bodies had been spotted, they were completely unaware that some of the people they were passing were part of Zephal’s calling - people who had once been dead themselves.

One of the police cars driving along a road close to the hospital nearly crashed as they caught sight of a nurse running frantically out of the hospital grounds covered in blood.

With all the reports of premeditated attacks, the two policemen knew that they had to leave the other police car to reach their destination by itself in order to check out if anything was happening inside the hospital.

And right now, the hotel security were glad to see the sight of a police car slowly moving around the hospital grounds and one of the guards ran out in order to catch the attention of the policemen inside it.

But the driver had already caught a glimpse of an ambulance outside accident and emergency with its door wide open, revealing to all who passed the aftermath of a horrific attack that had happened inside – and once again, a dead body was left behind.

As the police car came to a halt at the entrance of the accident and emergency unit, they noticed the security guard heading towards them and both policemen immediately got out of the car to ask what had happened.

But before they could even reach him, the body inside the ambulance suddenly came to life and without any warning, ran straight towards the security guard from his blind side.

Both the policemen couldn’t do anything to stop the attack and they could only witness the security guard’s neck being ripped apart by the resurrected ambulanceman.

But just the one killing was not enough – as he dropped the dead security guard to the ground, he turned his attention towards the two policemen – who were frozen to the spot.

Time seemed to stand still as the two policemen waited for the inevitable.

But instead of movement coming from the crazed killer, the two policemen jumped a mile as they heard the sound of the automatic doors of the accident and emergency unit opening to their left as a couple of nurse stepped out of them, completely oblivious to what was happening outside.

The air was silent as the three stood there waiting and watching to see who was going to make the first move. The two officers were fully trained in how to handle a person who was a danger to others and them, but no amount of training could prepare them for what was happening right now.

But they were now slap bang in the middle of the action and as they noticed the dead body on the floor, they instantly screamed.

The killer looked directly at the two nurses and gave out an eerie laugh to which one of the nurses suddenly became hysterical, her whole body shaking uncontrollably before panic set in as she realised that she could be the next victim.

One of the officers tried to grab hold of her to bring her away from the monster about to attack, but he was too late.

With one swift movement, the monster leapt and landed face to face with the nurse and stared into her eyes, making her even more hysterical than before.

She froze to the spot in fear and without a second’s hesitation, her attacker swiftly swung out his arm and ripped his talon like fingernails across her throat, sending blood and pieces of flesh flying through the air.

The officers and the other nurse stood there helpless as they watched the wounded nurse grab hold of her throat before dropping to her knees, desperately trying to breathe.

The monster towered over her and without any remorse, grabbed hold of her hair and pulled it so she looked up at him, gasping for air as she did so.

In her last moments of life, the nurse’s last memory was looking up helpless at her killer before he placed both of his hands on each side of her head and squeezed them together like a vice until the air was filled with a succession of sickening cracking noises which only ceased when the nurse lost all signs of life.

While the killer was enjoying ending a life, the other nurse took the opportunity to save her own by running back into the hospital to find a safe place to hide.

As she ran straight past the two policemen, they both realized it may be a good idea to join her inside as they had all witnessed how easily he had managed to kill.

As the officers got inside, they spotted the nurse who had run in first shouting something to the crowd of hospital staff behind the reception desk who had gathered together after hearing the commotion outside and were trying to catch a glimpse of what was going on.

One of them dived towards the desk and immediately pressed a red button that was on it, instantly locking all the doors that led into the accident and emergency unit, keeping the monster outside for the time being.

CHAPTER THIRTY

Back at the empty house, Lucius and I sat together in awkward silence after our unexpected moment of passion suddenly turned into a damp squib.

I had pushed Lucius off me after realizing that the time wasn’t right for me to fully submit myself to him yet – I had strong feelings towards him, but I had jumped into bed with a couple of ex-boyfriends and all matters of shit seemed to happen after they got what they really wanted.

I can not explain how embarrassed I felt right now and I had apologized to Lucius many times for falsely leading him on and even though he told me not to worry about it, the expression on his face told a different story.

I couldn’t help but think in the uncomfortable silence, what would have happened if we did carry on.

After all, neither of us had any intention of using some kind of protection and if we did go all the way, would there be a chance that I would fall pregnant?

My parents had brought me up better than that and that’s probably why some voice suddenly came into my head telling me to come to my senses and stop immediately.

No man had ever made me feel that way before and it certainly took a lot more time than Lucius and I had spent together before I would even dream of doing half of what I did earlier.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the attention that Lucius had given me and his incredibly muscular body certainly did turn me on in ways I never imagined, but I still couldn’t believe how easily I took my clothes off for him.

I never did like wearing provocative clothing in order to bring attention to my body and I have always felt very uncomfortable about anyone seeing parts of me that they shouldn’t really be.

Lucius suddenly stood up and looked out of the only window that was in the room.

“We can’t stay here for much longer, Naomi.” He spoke without taking his gaze away from the window. “I can sense that Zephal is approaching and we need to find somewhere else to hide. The problem is I can sense Zephal, but I have no idea where any of his followers are right now!”

I knew Lucius was right and I nodded my head in agreement, but before we could move on, I had to put my trainers back on.

Lucius walked past me and laughed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked him.

He gave me his answer as he left the room.

“You take a hell of a lot longer to put your clothes on than you take to get them off!”

“Bastard!” I mumbled to myself as I tied my shoelaces, before joining Lucius in the kitchen.

I took no time whatsoever in telling him what I thought of his last remark and as I finished, Lucius just smiled and made some kind of apology, explaining that it was just a joke and I shouldn’t take it to heart.
