I
was chopping
the potatoes and putting them in the pan when I heard the front door open. I smiled. My husband was home.

Adding some spices as I had seen on the TV as well as other ingredients, the dinner was almost done.

“Honey, I’m home!” Sean’s voice came from the other room. I heard him taking off his shoes and hanging up his coat. As usual, he would go to kiss Mia hello and then he would come to me.

Today it was different.

As I started the stove
,
the door to the kitchen opened slowly. The hinges were a bit creaky, but my husband would fix that. He always did. I chuckled to myself at the thought.

His arms engulfed me. “How’s my wifey today, hmm?” His lips were close to my ears, making every hair on my body stand on end.

“Awesome. And how’s my hubby? Still playing football like a teenager,” I replied, laughing.

“It’s a part of the job, babe,” he replied, his lips still on my ear. I felt goosebumps all down my spine.

Then a bouquet of flowers appeared before my eyes.

“Oh!” I jumped in surprise and turned to look at him. His hair was dark and a bit wet from running. “What’s this for?”

“Shame on you, Mrs. Coleman. You forgot what today is!” he giggled.

I remembered and kissed him passionately on the lips. Just like I always did. “Babe, with work and everything I completely forgot. You proposed to me today! Of course I would never forget that moment,” I said and kissed him back. “Sorry for not buying you anything.”

“Even after a year, you apologize for everything. Don’t worry. I have everything
.
I have you and Mia.” He kissed me back with his hands bringing me towards him.

“Mia’s in the room. She might see us,” I replied, giggling.

That didn’t stop him from kissing me all over my face and my neck. “I love you like I did on the first day that I met you and more.”

“You can’t imagine how much I love you as well.” My hands wandered in his hair, ruffling it, playing with it as my lips didn’t disconnect from his.

“And what smells so good? Oh, you’re killing me,” Sean said through laughter.

“You’ll see. It’s a surprise. Go see Mia and then you can help me with setting up the table.”

“Done, Your Highness.” He kissed my hand and went out of the door.

“Babe?” I called after him.

His head returned and popped into the room again. His smile was from ear to ear.

“Thank you for this. For all of it.”

He winked at me and headed towards Mia’s room. I resumed cooking.

I still couldn’t believe it. One year had passed since he had proposed to me in that hospital corridor. Everything had seemed to go in the fast forward mode. Like when watching a movie. The engagement, the wedding preparations, the actual wedding, the honeymoon… Everything was carefully embedded into my memory. Never to disappear.

A tear trickled down my cheek. And yes. This past year I had gotten pretty emotional as a person. Anything could make me cry. Even a sad ending to a book or a movie which I knew was just fiction.

“Dinner’s ready,” I finally shouted.

Quickly after that, the three of us surrounded the dining table, each knowing where to sit.

“So how was your day at the law firm? Do they listen to their sexy boss?” Sean teased me. After I had quit working at the law firm, I had been desperately searching for a new place that would be a good fit for me. However
,
I couldn’t find one. But thanks to Sean’s encouragement I had started my own law firm and was now my own boss.

We ended up giving a call to that jerk James Clarke to let him know he wasn’t the father. I’m glad he’s out of our lives. We decided to let it go and not file any charges as we didn’t want to deal with him anymore.

“Everything’s going smoothly. We just finished the first phase of the domestic abuse project. So, yeah. I’m slowly establishing my name and making it a brand,” I replied.

“Perfect, babe. Glad to hear that,” Sean said through chewing. “What about my princess Mia?”

“Same as usual, daddy. Science gives me a little more trouble, but I’ll manage somehow.” I fondled Mia’s cheek. She was so modest and kind-hearted.

“Well, a football player can’t help you much, right?”

The three of us burst into a warm laughter, our voices mixing with each other.

“As a matter of fact, you didn’t say how your day went. It’s a new team. How are you coping with the transfer,” I told him, putting a small piece of beef into my mouth. After we had married, Sean decided to move to my city so that we would live together here. That was why he had to switch teams.

“We’re preparing for the championship. A little tough, I guess. But you must come. I won’t win without the two of you,” he said and grabbed our hands.

“Of course,” Mia and I spoke at the same time which made us giggle.

The rest of the dinner we chitchatted, talking about our everyday situations and problems, having a laugh and offering solutions. I was grateful for having this. For having a sanctuary that I could go to at the end of the day. For having two wonderful people to always hear me out and always be there for me. It was more than I could ever wish for. We were the happiest family in the whole wide world.

Then all three of us cleaned the table and washed the dishes. It became our custom to watch some TV after we had dinner. And this night like every other, we planned to stay true to it.

“What are we watching?” I asked.

“Well, we have some romance, some action slash adventure slash thriller and some science fiction. Choose, girls,” Sean replied, looking at each of the DVDs in his hands.

In the end we went for the action type. We loved action movies, so it wasn’t actually hard to choose.

The three of us were cuddled on the couch, Mia in the middle holding the bowl of popcorn. Our eyes were glued to the screen. It was getting intense. Some serious shit. The guy was going to rescue his wife and kids. Come on, buddy! Always with you.

Then it stopped.

“What?” Sean and I screamed at the same time. Mia had pressed the pause button.

“I have to tell you something, mom and dad,” she said in a serious tone.

“Yeah, baby,” I said, putting a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

“I want a brother. Like seriously. All my friends at school have a brother or a sister. And even in this movie, this guy is rescuing his daughter AND son.”

Even halfway through I understood where this was heading. I looked at Sean who grinned.

“I’m sorry, babe. But you see, mommy is a bit busy with her firm and everything. These things need patience and focus. So you might have to wait for a while,” he said, kissing the top of her head and staring at my eyes. His were smiling. I knew that he wanted more kids. He had told me that he would wait for me. When I was ready. And I thanked him for that. Sean belonged to the rare group of men who would wait for their women to decide. After all, he was well aware that I was the one that would carry that kid for nine whole months and then deliver it. Duh!

Suddenly I wished to intervene. “Well, who knows? It might happen sooner than you would expect,” I said with a smile on my face.

“You’re kidding, right?” Sean spoke, his face just like the one of the happy emoji.

“Hmm… Do I look like it?” I said and ran my hand across my belly.

“OMG! That’s amazing.” Sean stood up and came to kiss me.

“Mommy, is it true? Will I have a brother?” Mia exclaimed jumping and laughing. She hugged me tight, not letting me go.

“Well, I can’t promise you a brother. It may be a sister,” I told her. She just grinned.

And then we laughed with all of our hearts. I gazed into Sean’s eyes that told me everything. They were all teary. He kissed me on the lips again, our tears colliding. Tears of joy.

I couldn’t remember when I had ever been this happy. I had everything right here next to me. The joy ruled in the room triggered by the news of a fourth member in the family.

In that moment I thanked God for everything that I had been through, for it made me who I was today. A proud mother and a wife and a lover.

“I love you,” Sean whispered and locked his lips with mine.

“I love you and always will,” I replied.

Thank You

Excerpt from Touchdown: A Bad Boy Sports Romance

My head was still buzzing from the weekend’s excitement on Monday morning. If I didn’t know any better, I would say that I saw a vulnerable side to Alexa Hall. She tries to appear so perfect, but it was nice to see that she’s human too.

I was excited to see her in Sociology class. I couldn’t sleep last night because I was thinking about what I would say to her.

She always sat directly in front of me, so maybe I would lean down and whisper something in her ear. It would be like an inside joke between us. Or, I could just flash her a seductive, knowing smile and watch her blush. I don’t mean to brag, but it’s too easy for me to make girls blush.

Maybe I’d just go for it and ask her out. Say something about how I want to spend another night with her that ends with both of us being conscious. I was nervous, but it was the perfect moment. I really felt like we made a special connection Saturday night.

I got to the classroom a little earlier than normal to make sure I had enough time to talk to her before the lecture started. I was feeling a bit anxious, but ready. It was now or never.

A few minutes passed. She was usually in her seat by now, with her notebook and pen out, ready to take notes. Her hair always draped over the back of her chair. Sometimes, a few locks would fall onto my knees and I would carefully brush them away with my finger.

The professor entered and began the lecture. No Alexa. I figured she must be sick. Maybe her hangover was so bad that she was still not feeling well today. I was a little concerned. I pulled out my phone and texted her.

Are you sick? Do you want me to take notes for you? We can meet up later and I’ll fill you in on what you missed in class.

I hit send. This was just as good. It would give me a perfect reason to see her again. Because it had to do with school, she would never accuse me of trying any funny business with her.

I checked my phone a few minutes later. No response. Poor girl, maybe she was really sick. Would it be weird if I showed up at her dorm later? Maybe with flowers or chicken soup and apologize to her for getting her so drunk?

I tried to take good notes, but I kept getting distracted. I was daydreaming a hundred different scenarios where I approached Alexa and she was so thankful that I took care of her that she wanted to show her appreciation. Any possibility from a nice dinner, to a kiss, to a night in my bed—I thought of them all.

Before I knew it, class was over. I followed the herd of students exiting through the door in the back of the classroom. That’s when I saw Alexa, quickly stuffing her books in her bag. She never sits in the back row of classrooms. That’s where the slackers sit, and she was definitely not that. I called out to her, but she was already lost in the crowd.

I felt confused. I was so nice to her and I really thought she had a good time with me. She wanted to come back to my place, and when that obviously didn’t happen, she told me I was nice. That’s a lot coming from this girl. She seemed to have a general mistrust of men, and I thought I had finally broken through by proving to her that I just want to be good to her.

Now I was angry. I texted her with concern about her well-being and she didn’t even have the decency to respond? She deliberately avoided me and ignored me when I wanted to talk to her. I could have any girl I want, and she knows that. Did she hate me so much that she couldn’t even look at me?

I was right. My friends told me that she was worth pursuing, and they were totally wrong about that. She was a cold person. She only cared about herself. Of course she would, though. Girls who come from money never have interest in guys like me. I was stupid to think that this was going to work out.

I fumed the whole way back to my dorm. It was probably better this way. Before long, the school year would be over. I didn’t have time to chase girls, anyway.

I needed to focus on finishing up my degree and preparing for the professional football combine. With any luck, I would be moving, and she’d go back to her hometown, or wherever rich girls go when they graduate with a degree they’ll never use.

I was done with Alexa Hall. I had been turned down by plenty of girls in my life, and it was no big deal. I was just so surprised that she, of all people, wanted nothing to do with me.

In my anger, I typed out a text, my fingers shaking.

Sorry I made sure you got home safely the other night. I didn’t think it would upset you this much. Next time, I’ll leave you on the street, puking your guts out.

My finger hovered over the send button before I quickly deleted it. I didn’t need to make things worse than they already were. I decided to take a page from Alexa’s book and just ignore her too. I’ve been dumped many times for doing the wrong thing with girls. This was just the first time I was ever rejected for doing the right thing.

: A Bad Boy Sports Romance

It had been three days since my world started to spin that night in the bar. I kept blaming it on the alcohol but in my heart, I knew it was a lie. Since then, I had done everything in my power to stay busy and avoid Desmond. I didn’t want to become another notch on his belt. Plus, no one would take me seriously for the next few weeks if I slept with my boss.

I needed to keep my head in the game and steer clear of him and any chance of complications. Each time that I saw him, I repeated to myself, “I’m here for my shop,” over and over again in my head until I was able to calm down my burning desire for him.

Today was no different, between each press release he would come in to see how the new improvements were coming. Each time he came in, he seemed more determined than the last to pull my attention away from the car.

I was starting to lose my battle of wills against him. I wanted to spend time with him, but I wouldn’t risk my reputation to do so. As the shop door opened, I braced myself for another round of banter.

“Can I help you?” I said in a friendly tone when the man who walked in wasn’t Desmond.

The man grinned, “I bet you can. I just came to meet this famous mechanic Desmond has.”

I smiled, “You must be looking for someone else then, I’m just doing my job.” I said politely.

I knew who he was, he was Luke Chambers. I also knew that Desmond despised him above all other racers. He was attractive, but not like Desmond.

“I don’t think so,” he said politely, “I believe you are more than what I have been looking for.”

“Boy, you know how to charm a girl, don’t you?” I asked playfully.

He smiled, “I wouldn’t know a thing about that. I just call it as I see it; beautiful, smart, and talented. Desmond is a lucky man.”

“I’m just doing my job, but thank you,” I replied.

“That’s a shame, if I had you on my team, I would treat you like a queen,” he cooed.

My senses were tingling, “He treats me just fine, thanks. Is there something I can help you with?”

My temper was starting to show. I didn’t like Luke being in the shop or around the car. He seemed a little too interested in me and my skills for my liking.

“Oh now, there’s no need to get upset. You never know, after this race there might be a future for us,” he said slyly. “Professionally, of course.”

I didn’t believe that he meant only professionally, and in any case, I didn’t want anything to do with him in either way.

“Sorry, but I have my own shop,” I replied as I started working on the car again.

I could see how interested he was in what I was doing, but I also knew that he wouldn’t be able to tell what was happening for the most part. He didn’t strike me as they type to work on his own cars or even to know how they were running. When the door to the shop opened for the second time, I looked up and let out a sigh of relief. Desmond was back, and he looked angry.

“What the hell are you doing in here Chambers,” he said, without even looking at me.

Luke smiled, “Now Desmond, I was just coming to meet the mechanic that I have heard so much about. No harm in that.”

“With you, there’s always some harm,” replied Desmond, glaring at the man.

“Now, that’s not very good sportsmanship Desmond, I was just paying a little professional visit, for now,” replied Luke with a wink to me.

I could see the anger building up inside of Desmond and knew that this wasn’t going to go anywhere good.

“I don’t think that drivers are allowed to be in the competition’s tents Luke, you should go,” I interjected, hoping to avoid bloodshed.

He smiled at me again, “You’re right. I should go. Hopefully though, I will see you around after the race Amber. I would love to spend some time with you, professionally, of course.”

Luke turned and headed for the door before I could reply and tell him I wanted nothing to do with him. One look at Desmond though, and I knew that it wouldn’t have done me any good. He was jealous, and it was a little flattering to me.

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling a little bit. I wondered how often a handsome man like Desmond got jealous over women. No doubt, when he hooked on, they stayed by his side for as long as he wanted.

“Desmond, he was just saying hello,” I said, hiding my grin.

“Bullshit, he was up to no good. I didn’t like the way he looked at Theresa,” he muttered.

“Oh. You didn’t like the way he looked at your car, huh?” I asked him, a little surprised at his response. I knew that there was more to it.

“Yeah, that among other things,” he replied.

I could see him starting to get nervous, and I couldn’t help but goad him a little bit. It was too funny not to.

“Sir, are you getting jealous that another racer was talking to me? I didn’t realize one little old mechanic was so important to you.” I said with a smile.

He looked at me but then quickly looked away, clearing his throat, “I just know Luke, if he was in here, he was up to no good. He is a dirty racer. I know that he tried to sabotage my car last time and this time he will do it again. He thought that he could get in here and mess something up with José out of the way. I just hope that you are as good at seeing through his crap as José was.”

I noticed that he didn’t deny being jealous, but I couldn’t help but be a little bit offended by him. “You don’t think I’m smart enough to know he was trying to do something?”

Desmond looked at me, “I didn’t mean it that way. I’m sorry.”

I smiled at him, “It’s okay.”

“It’s just, Luke gets under my skin. He’s just an all-around bad guy,” said Desmond.

“I sort of got that vibe from you earlier. Do you think he will try to come back? Knowing it’s against the rules?” I asked him.

Desmond nodded his head, “He doesn’t give up credence to rules. If he does come back, tell him to leave right away. If he even so much as sets foot near you or Theresa, call the race police in here. I won’t have him near anything of mine.”

I raised an eyebrow. I knew that he was talking about Theresa, but I also got the feeling that he meant more than just the car. I wasn’t sure if I was okay with that or not but I had to admit that his words sent a chill down my spine.

I couldn’t help but let my mind wander; thinking about what it would feel like to be owned by Desmond Keys. To feel his body, naked, underneath me. I shuddered before shaking my head, bringing myself back to reality.

“Right,” I said, clearing my throat, “I will make sure he doesn’t come back. I think I should go over the car now. I didn’t pay attention to him while he was in here, he could have done something without me noticing.”

Desmond looked angry all over again as he spoke, “I think I will stick around and help you. If that’s okay?”

I smiled, “It’s your car remember?”

“We are running out of time, the next leg starts in a few hours.” he said.

“Right,” I replied, now I was in the zone to get started on checking the car over.

With Desmond at my side, we began to comb over every inch of Theresa. I was surprised when I realized that he had a lot more knowledge about cars than he had originally let on. As we worked, we talked, and he told me about how he and José first met and how much the older man had taught him.

When I asked about his family and parents though, he shut down on me. After several minutes of awkward silence, they called for the racers to head to the starting line.

“I haven’t come across anything, have you?” I asked him, hoping the race would pull him out of the bad temper he now seemed consumed by.

He shook his head, “No. All I can do is hope that he was just in here to hit on you.”

I flinched, “Listen, Desmond, about your parents.”

He shook his head, “No, don’t apologize. I shouldn’t have snapped like that. Look, it’s a long story and one that I would love to share with you. Right now, though, I have a race to win. Maybe we could pick this up over dinner later?”
