Monday Mornings: A Novel (38 page)

Ty had read basketball great Bill Russell’s book when he was a kid and couldn’t read enough sports books. He was surprised when Russell said some great players did not want the ball at end of the game. In the time-out before the final shot, they would make themselves scarce, sending the coach the message:
Design a play for someone else
. Now Ty wanted the ball. He wanted to be the one in charge of this boy’s case, but he was acutely aware that he was part of the team. Aristotle had said the only person who could live alone was an animal or a saint. He could not do it alone, in the operating room or in life.

Ty scrubbed in, strode into the OR, adjusted the loupes over his eyes, and turned to the scrub nurse: “Scalpel.”
