“Selfish?” I raised my eyebrows.

“Yes. You see, I want you to myself. I want all of you, all for me, forever and ever.”

“Lucas…” My voice was trembling.

“I know you’re scared to need me, Steph. But I’m here telling you that I need you. I love you, Steph. Marry me?”

“Oh Lucas—” My voice broke and I flung my arms around his neck. I pressed my face into his chest as he clasped me close. “Yes.”

“Yes?”

“Yes! Oh, Lucas, yes!”

He beamed as he slid the diamond ring onto my trembling finger. I held it up to the light and it twinkled, reflecting the morning rays everywhere.

I was his now. And to my surprise, I wasn’t scared. I didn’t feel nervous.

It felt
right.

“So,” I said, a joking smile playing across my lips. “What was your backup plan if I said no again?”

“I would have thrown the ring down the garbage disposal.”

“No!”

“Actually, there was a poison in the cupcake, and only I have the antidote. I was going to threaten you with it if you didn’t accept my proposal.”

I was doubled over at the waist laughing, and Lucas planted a dozen kisses on my hip, up my arm, and into the crook of my neck. I laughed and laughed until I was breathless.

“No!” I said, giggles erupting from my chest. “No!”

“No,” Lucas said, resting his chin on one hand and leaning away from me. “If you’d said no, I would have just waited and asked you again and again.”

“Again and again?”

“Until you said yes.”

I looked down at my hand, the unfamiliar diamond weighting down my finger, then back up at Lucas. A warm feeling swept through me. For once, it was okay to need someone. It wasn’t just me holding everyone up now. Now, I had Lucas, and we would hold each other up.

Lucas’s dark eyelashes framed his light eyes. And looking at him, I knew that I had made the right choice. I had never truly been happy before, because I had never let anyone in. I opened my arms and let out the words I’d been aching to say.

“I love you, too, Mr. Black.”

I never meant to be here: tied up in bed next to a serial killer.

When I followed him home, I was just playing Nancy Drew. Trying to find out his secret. His kiss was intoxicating, and I thought he was harmless.
I was wrong.
Nancy Drew never ended up in a basement, handcuffed to a radiator, teased to the edge of insanity, begging to be let go.
Soon, I stopped begging to be let go.
Soon, I started begging to be
HIS.
