Chapter One

Blessed with exceptional hearing, Jessica Tam knew what was going on before she opened her bedroom door. The sight that greeted her wasn’t a surprise. Her boyfriend, Geoff, lay on his back on the bed with a blonde Jess recognized from the gym bouncing on his cock. He gripped her hips, jerked up against her hard, and then glanced over at Jessica.

“It’s about fucking time, Jessie. Where have you been?”

The woman quickly turned her head and grinned at her. “Hi, Jess.” She wiggled her fingers in a cutesy little wave.

Jess raised her hand to return the greeting out of habit.
Could this situation be more messed up? I’m standing here waving hi to the woman having sex with my boyfriend.
She felt like her emotions had gone completely numb, as did her brain, because she couldn’t think straight.

“Get your clothes off and get into bed with me and Cheryl.” Geoff jerked his hips up, making the woman on his lap squeal and then laugh.

Jess blinked at him in shock.
Is he serious?
“But I just came back from the gym.”
And I need to get away from here.

“Oh, all right,” he sighed as if she was putting him out in some way. “Go have a shower and then come in here.” He slapped Cheryl on the ass and she giggled as she swiveled her hips against him.

“Look at these beautiful titties, Jessie.” He reached up and wrapped his fingers over Cheryl’s breasts, making the stupid woman giggle again. “I want to see your lips on her tits. Come on, hurry up.”

“Geoff, I don’t think that we talked about this.” Jessica’s heart pounded against her chest and a sharp throbbing started in her temples.

“Don’t be an idiot. You’re making Cheryl uncomfortable.”

Cheryl looked over her shoulder and smiled sweetly at Jess. “I’m okay, hun. Why don’t you do as he says and come in here so we can play, too?”

“Yes, that is what I want to see.” He shook her breasts and Cheryl ground her hips against his. “Jessie can make up for coming home so late from the gym. She will lick that pretty twat of yours until you cream all over her face.”

Jessica had never given Geoff the impression she would be interested in having sex with a woman. As usual, he only heard what he wanted to hear whenever he brought it up in conversation. She jerked her thumb over her shoulder. “I’ll go shower.”

“Fine, get to it and make it fast. I want to watch you both making out over my cock.” Geoff started fingering Cheryl’s clit, ignoring Jessica for the moment.

Jess practically ran to the bathroom, and that was where she stopped. Staring at herself in the mirror, she wondered exactly who the woman was staring back at her. How did she get herself into this?
I don’t want this. I don’t want to do this.
Fear gripped her throat and she frantically thought about how to get out of it. When she first met Geoff he seemed so strong and she felt safer than she ever had before. But safety turned into control and then possession.

After dinner at Gordon Roberts’s a few months ago Geoff became almost obsessed with her boss’s relationship.

Gordon’s two wives, Helen and Ann, loved him as much as they did each other. They shared a beautiful family and they all respected each other and supported each other. Ever since that night, Geoff went on and on about how they needed to find her a girlfriend. It wasn’t that Jess had anything against that kind of relationship, it simply wasn’t for her. As the weeks went by Geoff became more and more fixated with the idea bringing another woman into their relationship. She should have known that this was a possibility. Geoff always got his way, and she did as she was told. When Geoff didn’t get his way, well—Jessica learned the hard way to make sure he got what he wanted.

Now she was on the brink of a massive change in her life that she didn’t want. She felt betrayed and abused. She had gone to great lengths to hide the bruises that Geoff inflicted on her. Because she healed so quickly, she didn’t have to try all that hard, but Gordon had started to suspect something was wrong. Every time one of his wives had come to the office, they would ask all sorts of questions about her life.

It wasn’t entirely Geoff’s fault. She knew he started juicing, and steroid-induced rages were a side effect. But this was too much. No one could fault her for leaving him because he was having an affair.
Is it even sane that I feel the need to make an excuse to leave him?

She couldn’t just break it off with him. He would come after her and make her come back. And she would because she couldn’t help herself. There was something about the strength of him that made her want to follow. She could blame her animal instincts but there was a time she never would have put up with this shit. She’d allowed him to whittle down her self-confidence over the last nine months.

Jessica looked at the panicked woman in the mirror again. “You can do this. You have to do this. Leave it all behind you.” She could see the colour draining from her own face. “If you don’t go now, you never will.” And she would end up like her mother, terrified to be alone, and worshiping the ground of a man who treated her like garbage.

Jessica hated her father and the forests she’d grown up in. When the opportunity had come up to work in Ontario for the Ecstasy Lake pack she’d jumped at it. Her younger brother Daniel had come with her at the time. He’d said he wanted to protect her, but she’d known he wanted to get away from their parents as well. She still remembered being terrified of Gordon at that first meeting. Now that she knew him better, she understood her fears had been unnecessary. Gordon wouldn’t hurt a single hair on the head of any woman in his pack. He wasn’t a pushover, and would order the slaughter of anyone who endangered his extended family. Thankfully, she’d only ever seen that side of him once.

She knew she was in a better position than many women. She had a place to go, but if she called Gordon he might show up and kill Geoff, and she couldn’t risk that possibility. Actually, he was levelheaded enough not to maim Geoff, but Ann or Helen wouldn’t be as calm. She didn’t want to put the family in that kind of position.

If her brother found out, Geoff would be a dead man, but her brother was in British Columbia on training with another pack there. It was Gordon’s idea, and so far it had worked out well. The packs followed a similar system to the one the medieval clans did. Where the clans had fostered out their sons for training, the packs now sent men who had been promoted to Guardians to other packs for training. This way the ties in their small communities were strengthened, and it helped extend families and create a bond among shifters.
