“Devil’s advocate? Really?” Day rolled his eyes.

Lam chuckled. “Sorry. Couldn’t help that. Anyway, who do you think Paisley is?”

Day thumped his fingers on the table. “I don’t know. There’s just something about how she was asking me those questions that made me wonder.”

Silence filled the room while Lam finished the meal Day had cooked. After pushing to his feet, Day wandered over to the sink where he could stare out of the window. The trees bent in the fierce wind blowing off the lake, but he wasn’t causing this weather. It was a normal storm swirling over the water and Day wouldn’t doubt it was building into a hurricane-type squall.

He often strolled along the edge of Superior, studying the ebb and flow of the waves crashing against the rocks. There was something about the power of nature that soothed him. While his moods could affect the weather around him and on Earth, he wasn’t really in control of it. No one controlled the natural world—animals or weather.

Wandering and learning the moods of the lake had eased his transition from the heavenly realm to the earthly one. He’d learned patience, how to break people with steady pounding or slow persistence. Superior had her fierce and terrible moments where she crumbled freighters like matchsticks, but for the most part, she wore her opponents down. She wasn’t interested in anything except the swells and eddies of her water.

Day had been like that once. He’d only cared about himself and how he could survive in a world he’d never been meant for.
Fuck!
It had been so difficult at first—nearly impossible. There had been times when he’d wanted to go to the Judge and beg him to end Day’s misery, even though he doubted there was any way for that to happen.

The longer he’d existed and the more he’d listened to the lake, he discovered a better way of looking at his life. The Quad wanted him to be bitter and hateful. They needed him to take his anger out on the very mortals they had sworn to protect. Day had realized if he did that, they would win, and he wasn’t going to allow them that triumph.

He jumped when he felt Lam touch his shoulder. After turning, Day encircled Lam’s waist, pulling him tight against his side. Lam laid his head on Day’s shoulder and sighed. He rested his cheek on the top of Lam’s curls, breathing deep of his familiar scent.

“Do you think she was sent to keep an eye on you? Could she be how the Quad found out about us?” Lam’s low voice washed over Day’s chest.

Day shrugged. “I don’t know. I would like to think she wouldn’t betray me. I’ve always treated her as though she were family. Paisley is as mortal as your Horsemen are now. I would’ve noticed if she wasn’t. I don’t see the Quad using one of them to watch me.”

Lam sniffed loudly. “You’re right. As disdainful as they were of humans, I doubt they would chose to use Paisley as a watch dog.”

He rubbed his cheek over Lam’s hair and smiled when Lam yawned. “I think we should get some sleep then see what else we can do when we wake up.”

“Sounds good to me,” Lam agreed.

After making sure the kitchen was clean, they headed back upstairs.

Chapter Ten

Lam stretched as warm fingers trailed down his chest to wrap around his cock. He smiled even as he opened his eyes and saw Day wedged between his thighs. “Oh gosh,” Lam groaned when Day encircled the head of his shaft with his lips.

He arched his hips slightly, pushing another inch into Day’s mouth then grunted as Day pinned him back to the mattress. “What? Don’t want me to move yet?”

A little shake of his head made Day’s teeth scrape over Lam’s skin.

“Hey now, be careful with those. I don’t want to go to the hospital for stitches. Those might be a little hard to explain.”

Day snorted and Lam chuckled, reaching down to run his fingers through Day’s dark hair. Sighing, he let his eyes drift shut again while Day sucked more of him in. Lam wasn’t about to argue with the way his lover worked his erection.

“I’m in love with your mouth,” Lam murmured then jerked as Day took a hold of his balls and tugged. “Crap!”

He shoved against Day’s touch and moaned as he slid deeper into Day’s mouth. It was a dance they’d done a thousand times. Him lying on his back while Day sucked him off. Then Day would fuck him until he came, coating their skins with his cum. It was one of the things he loved most about being with Day.

More often than not, their lovemaking sessions ended with him filled by Day while screaming his name. Lam could admit to himself that it wasn’t how he’d thought their relationship would go when they’d first met. Even though he’d always known Day desired him, Lam had never dreamed what they did would become making love instead of having sex.

Day worked Lam’s cock, doing all the things he’d learned drove Lam crazy. He didn’t keep Lam from moving and Lam pushed in as far as he could until Day gagged. He backed off a little, but Day tapped his hip.

The suction got stronger and pressure build behind Lam’s balls. He grabbed Day’s head, holding Day while he thrust. His climax hit him with a sudden burst and he came. Day drank down his cum, but some dripped from the corners of his mouth.

Once Lam started to soften, Day licked him clean then allowed him to slip out. Lam flopped back and breathed to try to calm his pulse. Day crawled up to press a kiss to Lam’s lips. After touching Day’s cheek, Lam curled up slightly to lick his drying cum from Day’s face.

Day smiled. “You have no idea how sexy it is when you do that.”

He chuckled. “Well, if you wouldn’t make such a mess, I wouldn’t have to do that so often. Now what do you want? My ass or my mouth?”

“Your ass, of course. Was there any real doubt about what I would want? I live for your ass.”

Lam took a hold of his knees then pulled them to his chest, exposing himself. “Then take it.”

Day snatched up the bottle of lube from where they’d tossed it the night before. He squirted some on his fingers, but when he reached out, Lam stopped him.

“Just coat your cock. I’m still stretched from earlier.” He could tell Day wanted to protest, but he shook his head. “I don’t mind the burn, Day. It’ll be fine.”

“I never want to hurt you,” Day muttered as he positioned his shaft at Lam’s opening.

Lam caressed Day’s chest then smiled. “You won’t. Not this way. I’m sure you’ll hurt me at some point, Day. No relationship ever goes without a bit of hurt from time to time. Also, I know you’ll never do it on purpose. Now, fuck me.”

Day widened his eyes. “Yes, sir.”

He sighed as Day slowly thrust in, inch by inch, until he bottomed out. The pain from being filled burned through Lam and he bit his lip to keep from shouting. Day paused until Lam tightened his inner muscles around Day’s cock.

“Move. Take what you need,” he told Day.

Twining his fingers in the sheets under him, Lam braced for the impact of Day’s hard stroke in. He knew Day wouldn’t have the control to take it slow and easy. His lover was always quick off the mark first thing in the morning.

Their grunts filled the air as they rocked and rubbed together while Day took his pleasure. Lam stared into Day’s dark gaze, watching as those beautiful eyes glazed over with desire and love. Day’s movements grew jerky and came faster, and Lam did all he could to drive Day over the edge.

Day grunted, flooding Lam’s ass with his cum then collapsing into Lam’s arms. He ran his hand over Day’s sweat-soaked hair and down his back. His breathing evened out until they were in sync. Closing his eyes, he savored the weight of Day on top of him, pressing him into the mattress.

“Why don’t we sleep a while longer, then you can make me breakfast?” he suggested.

“Sounds like a good plan,” Day agreed, rolling onto his back and taking Lam with him.

Lam snuggled into Day’s side and rested his head on Day’s shoulder. He allowed his eyes to drift shut while listening to the steady beat of Day’s heart.

“Rise and shine, love.”

Lam pried open his eyes to see Day standing next to the bed, holding a tray. He pushed himself up, leaning against the pillows then smiling. “Breakfast in bed? You’ve never done this before.”

“You were never able to spend all night with me before,” Day pointed out as he set the tray over Lam’s lap. “I made waffles, eggs, bacon, juice, and coffee. Did you have any of these while you were in Paris?”

“Paris? Umm…no. I had crêpes, fruit and sausages, I think.” He picked up his mug before taking a sip. Grimacing, he set it back down. “Why did I try it again? I don’t really like it.”

“How about some tea? I can make some for you.” Day started to head out of the room.

“No. That’s all right. I’ll just have juice. Did you bring something for yourself?”

“No. Though I guess, if it makes you uncomfortable, I can pretend.” Day grabbed a fork then started to reach toward Lam’s plate.

He edged it away. “This is mine. Get your own.”

Laughing, Day settled next to him and rested his hand on Lam’s knee. “Eat up. I thought we could walk on the shore when you’re finished. It’s calmed down a lot since we got here last night.”

“We know why. You’re not upset anymore. I bet the weather all over the world is back to normal.” Lam took a bite of eggs then chewed. “These aren’t that bad. You should become a chef. Might be a way to keep busy, instead of trying to keep track of all your businesses.”

“And put Paisley out of a job? That’s not what she wants, I’m sure. If she doesn’t have a job, she can’t keep an eye on me.” Day shrugged. “Besides, I don’t think I’d like to cook for other people. Making something for you makes me happy. Other people annoy me, and I don’t care if they’re happy or not.”

Lam rolled his eyes. “You do that hard-ass bastard attitude well, but I know your secret. You’re a marshmallow inside.”

Day bumped their shoulders together. “Only for you. I couldn’t care less about anyone else.”

“Do you remember the second time we met?” Lam focused his attention on his food.

“Yes, I do.” Day brushed a kiss over Lam’s cheek. “I remember every moment of our time together, Lam.”

“We had tapas at a café in Lisbon. We spent thirty minutes together. You talked about watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel. I was amazed by the awe in your voice.” Lam smiled.

“I’d never seen anything so beautiful,” Day admitted, then cleared his throat. “I have to ask you though. Your tattoo. It’s gone.”

Lam let him change the subject. Reaching back, he ran his fingers over his lower back. “I know. I noticed it when I got dressed in Paris. I guess since I’m no longer a lamb of God, I don’t get to have the mark.” He tried to keep the sorrow out of his voice.

“I’m sorry.” Day cradled Lam’s face, turning him so they could look each other in the eye. “I know being a messenger angel was important to you. I realize I’m the cause of all your troubles and I wouldn’t be shocked if you decided not to have anything more to do with me.”

Lam pinched Day on the side.

“Ow! Why’d you do that?” Day rubbed the abused flesh and glared at Lam.

“I wanted you to stop being so noble and crap. If I wanted to walk away from you, I wouldn’t have had Baqir bring me here. I would’ve stayed in Paris and begun a new life there.” Lam sniffed in annoyance. “I knew what the consequences could be if we were caught. Yes, I’m sad that I won’t be able to do my job anymore, but as far as I’m concerned, what we have is worth all of the pain and trouble I’ve gone through.”

Day kissed him hard, and Lam opened, letting Day sweep his tongue in. They dueled for a few minutes then Day drew away. After taking a deep breath, Lam went back to eating and Day fell quiet while he finished.

“What would you like to do today?” Day stood when Lam set his tray aside.

“I want to walk along the shore and watch the water for a while,” Lam informed him. “I like the lake.”

Smiling, Day held out his hand. “I think we can do that.”

As they wandered down to the edge of the lake, Day wrapped his arm around Lam’s waist, bringing him tight to his side. Lam rested his head on Day’s shoulder while they walked. He thought about another time they’d strolled together like this.

“Ah, I seem to have found a real angel amongst the fakes.”

Lam jumped when a warm body pressed up against him from behind. He recognized the voice and he tensed. “Daystar, what are you doing here?”

He swore Daystar had just kissed the nape of his neck before whispering, “What would you say if I told you I was here to tempt souls and see how many I could get to sin?”

“I would say I wasn’t surprised,” Lam retorted then tried to ease away, but Daystar had taken a hold of his arm. He swung around to face the fallen and scowled. “I think you should leave.”

Day glanced over Lam’s shoulder to see what he was looking at. “Why are you watching this couple?”

Lam tugged against Day’s grip. “None of your business. Are you following me?”

“Yes.”

Daystar’s simple answer shocked Lam. He froze as he met Daystar’s gaze. “Why?”

“You intrigue me, little angel. The messenger angels I knew never lingered to watch mortals. They never cared what happened after they did their job. Yet you stay around. You want to know what the mortals are doing.” Daystar shrugged. “I find that very interesting.”

Lam shook his head. “Why is that interesting?” He tugged again. “Why not go and make them sin? It’s Carnivale and they’re looking for reasons to disobey the scriptures.”

Daystar snorted. “Mortals don’t need me to help them do that. They’re more than happy to sin all on their own. Come, walk with me.”

He wasn’t given a chance to argue, just dragged outside of the building. The humans strolling along the street paid no attention to them. With a wave of Daystar’s hand, they were outfitted in dark cloaks and domino masks to hide their faces while they blended in with those celebrating. Lam had thought he could use the crowd to get away, but he ended up not even trying.

For some reason, he’d caught Daystar’s attention and now the fallen wouldn’t leave him alone, at least until he’d worked all that curiosity out of his system. Lam would have to suffer his presence while hoping the Quad didn’t find out about it. He refused to examine his own reasons for not just disappearing and leaving Daystar behind.
