“What’s wrong?” Prophecy said.

He stared at the ring. “I know who the robed person in your vision is … everything that has passed is going to be like a dream once this war really begins. There is no way we will all survive this.”

He raised his eyes to meet hers and saw they were wide with fear.

“We have been played for fools all along,” he said in a sombre tone and curled his hands into fists when the sharp stab of anger lanced through him. “I have been so blind.”

“Who?” Prophecy said and waited for his words to hit her. She had to know what they were up against. Judging by the look on Valentine’s face, he thought it was impossible for them to defeat their real enemy. Who was so powerful that they had him this scared?

He was silent for a moment and she could feel the whole room watching them, could sense everyone’s apprehension as keenly as her own.

His eyes dropped to the ring and then moved to her amulet before he raised them to meet hers.

Her heart clenched and the chill of fear ran through her when he said the name. Everything he’d said was true. Defeating this enemy was going to claim the lives of many. The power they held was matched only by her own.

She stared at the amulet and whispered.

“Elena.”
