Reclaim the Wolf: BBW Paranormal Shape Shifter Romance (Wolf Valley Raiders Book 3) (10 page)

Kira felt her rage course through her. “You need balls to do something like that, and last time I looked you were the kind of coward who killed a kind man who only ever wanted to help you.”

“Help me? He wanted me to admit to those thefts, wanted me to say sorry. I have never been sorry for anything in my life. Except maybe you not being there when his life blood left his body.”

“You’re a monster,” she hissed.

“And you created me. Brought me back here, let me play happy families. But he only ever had love in his heart for you. Do you know those were his last words?
Don’t hurt Kira, please,
” Frasier mimicked.

“So you admit killing him?” she flashed back, while Cole sat silently, his eyes spearing Frasier with their hatred.

“Oh no. I never said that. I only said I was there when he died, and the whole town knows that already.” He smiled, sickeningly, and put his hand on the door. “Now, let’s go have a bit of fun in my office.”

Kira opened her mouth to reply, but before she had a chance to tell him to go to hell, a sound like thunder ripped through the air. In the distance, someone screamed, making the sheriff step away from the truck.

“Sounds as if things are going to hell in Wolf Valley, Sheriff. Maybe you should do your job and investigate.”

“Nice try.” He stepped back towards the truck, but another blast ripped through the streets.

“That sounded awfully close to your office, Sheriff. Maybe we will go there after all.” Cole banged on the door, the signal for Kira to put her foot down and drive. She did, her tires squealing as she sped along the road.

In the rear-view mirror, the sheriff was getting into his car, and then he was racing behind them. As they turned the corner onto the main street, she slammed on her brakes, the sheriff’s car going straight into the back of them.

“Now that felt good,” she said as she watched a dazed sheriff get out of his car and stagger along the road.

“Time for action. You know what to do?”

“Yes.” She got out of the truck, heading towards Frasier. “I am so sorry. I had to stop. Are you OK?”

“What the hell are you doing? There’s nothing obstructing your path.”

“Something ran out. A wolf, I think. I didn’t know you allowed them in town like that.” She went up to him, right up close; he had his hand over his nose, which was bleeding profusely. “Here. Hold this on it.” She gave him a handkerchief, which he took off her, pressing it to his nose, still cursing. It was now that Kira relieved the sheriff of her father’s gun. Frasier didn’t even notice.

“I am sure going to have you charge with obstructing the law,” the sheriff was saying.

“I think you should deal with this first,” she said, moving out of the way so he could see the large group of people standing fifty feet down the road.

“What the hell is wrong with this town?” he yelled. “Get back into your houses. I can’t have you all littering the streets. Not when I’m trying to deal with police business.”

“I think these people have a right to decide what they want to do? Wolf Valley is a free town, isn’t it?” Cole asked, standing at the front of the crowd. His eyes slipped past the sheriff to Kira, who nodded.

“Since when are you in charge,” the sheriff barked.

“Since I decided it was time for a change. Isn’t that how you became sheriff?” Cole asked.

A murmur went through the crowd. The sheriff turned red with rage. “You have a smart mouth, sonny.” Then his hand went for his gun, and shock replaced his rage when he realised he was unarmed.

“What were you planning on doing, shooting another unarmed man in the head?” Cole’s voice taunted the sheriff, who now realised he was outnumbered and outgunned. The crowd behind Cole began to sense this was their chance.

“Think you’re so tough. When I call my backup, they will slaughter you.”

“I don’t think you’ll be calling anyone when I’ve broken all the teeth in your mouth,” Cole said, squaring up to the sheriff, fists raised, ready for a fight.

The sheriff grinned, overconfident in his own prowess and the knowledge that Cole had a wound on his shoulder already. That was where he struck first, or at least where he tried to strike, but Cole dodged him.

“Nice try. However, I have been fighting with my brother since as long as I can remember. So you’re going to have to do a lot better. Or are you a little out of practice?” Cole struck the sheriff on the chin, sending him reeling backwards. However, he was back, lunging at Cole in a blink of an eye, and Kira cringed inwardly as his fist contacted with Cole’s stomach.

Almost as if it bounced off, Cole retaliated. And so began the fight, blow for blow, at first hard to tell who was winning. But gradually the tiredness showed on Cole’s face and the sheriff took control of the fight. Kira felt hot tears run down her face; this was not how it was supposed to end. Cole, her mate, was supposed to beat the sheriff and give hope back to the town; instead, it was about to die in the dust.

However, just when they all thought Cole was beaten, and the sheriff began to look comfortable in his victory, Cole sprang to his feet, and hit the sheriff so hard in the face, his teeth cracked and his nose exploded, felling him to his knees.

All fight left him. Both hands covered his face, trying to stem the bleeding, but it was no use. A shocked silence covered the crowd, the people of Wolf Valley stunned that someone had taken on and beaten the sheriff. They decided to grab it with both hands. First, a whoop, then people were hollering, a baying mob, about to unleash their pent-up rage at the way they had been treated.

It was Kira who stepped forward. “Let’s not spill any more blood on this man’s account. A new sheriff will take over and restore order to the town. All those that have joined this piece of shit in making your lives hell will be forced to leave.”

She bent down and took the sheriff’s badge off the moaning Frasier’s chest. “You never deserved to wear it.”

He didn’t answer. He just knelt on the floor, defeated.

“What about you, Kira?” a voice shouted from the back of the crowd.

“What about me?” she asked, worried what was about to happen.

“Your dad was the best sheriff we had. You should wear his badge.”

She looked down at the small star in her hand; blood covered it. Scratched and worn, it nevertheless stood for something in this town. It should stand for good. Was she capable of such a thing?

Cole came forward and took it from her, pinning it to her chest while a murmur of approval swept through the townsfolk. “I think that’s the best idea I’ve ever heard.”

She looked down at it, tears in her eyes. “Only until the next alpha arrives.”

He smiled at her and her world tilted back on her axis; it felt right. For the first time since her dad had died, things were OK in Kira’s world.

Two wolves stood on the peak looking down over the valley. The town looked different this morning, brighter, as if the dawn mist had lifted for good. Together, the silver grey wolf and the brown wolf with flecks of amber in his coat ran together, a symbol of the new hope for Wolf Valley. This was their home, their territory.

If only they could hold onto it until the new alpha appeared...
