Saving Georgia (21 page)

“You think we should open it?” Jason asks, looking at the red wrapped box on the couch.

“I don’t know if it should even be in the house. You locked the door behind you right?” I panic.

“Yes. I texted Mr. Hyde as well.” Jason paces again.

My phone rings again. I send it to voicemail.

I open the box slowly. Nothing dangerous happened the other two times. If this person really wants me dead they would have done it by now I figure. Besides, the life I’ve been living recently I think heaven would be a more than welcomed sight.

My Bible! Someone stole my Bible and sent it back to me? Who does that? This is nuts. This is scary.

Now the house phone is ringing. I guess this must be important.

“Hello?” I ask, annoyed.

“Ms. Ashton? This is Officer Stamm. You need to leave the house now! It’s not safe!”

“What?” I scream.

“Get out the house now!” Officer Stamm yells back at me. I can hear the sirens from his car through the phone. I hang up and run to the door.

The door bashes open, knocking Jason unconscious. I look up into a pair of scary eyes. Eyes I’ve never wanted to see before.

“Cecil.” I spit out. And then there is darkness.
