"Apology accepted. With pleasure," said Callie. A smile lurked at the corners of her mouth. "By the way," she added casually, "there's one more reason I thought Gina had to be a fake."

"What's that?" asked Joe.

"You really want to know?" Callie asked.

"Yeah, I really want to know," said Joe.

"Okay, you asked," said Callie. "All I had to do was see a woman like Gina making gaga eyes at a guy like you, and I could be absolutely sure something wasn't for real."

"Good deduction," said Frank, nodding seriously.

"Hey, wait a minute!" Joe began.

Then Frank and Callie burst out laughing. After a moment Joe joined them. "I know you've been saving that one for a long time," he said to Callie. "Okay, welcome to the team. But I'm putting you on special assignment."

"As what?" Callie asked suspiciously.

"I saw how you used this thing." Joe tapped the baseball bat. "I think you should be our designated hitter!"
