erection, and inserted the tip into Jonathan’s soft hole. He was always amazed at how

easily he could slip it into Jonathan’s beautiful body. There were no awkward moments

of pain; they never had to shift around to find the right position. If there was pain,

Jonathan never complained once. This time the lights were on, so he could see the shaft

of his penis slide all the way into Jonathan’s gentle body. When it was all the way in and

Ed’s pubic hairs were pressed against the bottom of Jonathan’s ass, he looked at Jonathan

and asked, “Is that okay?” He knew Jonathan would tell him; they never hesitated to tell

each other what they liked in bed.

Jonathan moaned, then rested his left ankle on Ed’s shoulder and pressed his right

foot against Ed’s chest. He grabbed his own dick and said, “Hard, Ed. Do it hard like I

know you like to do it to me.” Ed didn’t waste time. His hips bucked fast and his balls slapped against

Jonathan’s ass. Jonathan held the side of the table with one hand so his body wouldn’t

move; he jerked his dick with the other. His legs hung over Ed’s strong arms and dangled

in limp circles. When he went deep, Ed could feel Jonathan’s hole clamp down on his

dick. Jonathan had a powerful sense of control; he knew how to make his anal lips tighten

and release at just the right moment.

A few minutes later, Ed climaxed first. He closed his eyes and threw his head

back. His dick swelled, his balls jumped up in his scrotum, and he dropped a load into the

condom. When he opened his eyes and looked down, Jonathan ejaculated a thick stream

of white juice that flew over his chest and landed on his face. He’d tried to turn his head

to avoid getting sprayed with his own come, but he hadn’t been fast enough.

Ed pushed deeper and continued to fuck him with slow, easy bangs. Jonathan

lifted his legs off Ed’s arms and pressed his feet against Ed’s chest. Then he looked up at

Ed with wide brown eyes and licked his own come off his lips. When Jonathan

swallowed back, Ed’s mouth fell open.

Jonathan licked some more and smiled. “I like the taste,” he said, shrugging his

shoulders. “Hope it doesn’t creep you out or anything.”

Ed shook his head. “It’s hot,” he said. “Do it again.”

When his face was clean and there wasn’t a drop of come left, Ed finally pulled

out and helped him sit up straight. He kissed him on the lips and turned sideways to

remove the condom. While he was pulling it off, he felt Jonathan’s hand reach down and

grab his ass. He had gentle hands and his fingertips were soft. He squeezed it a few times

and said, “Damn, you have an ass like granite. And it’s small and cute.” Ed frowned. Jake used to say the same thing about his ass. And all of a sudden he

felt overwhelmed. He wanted Jonathan to get dressed and leave. He’d been ready to ask

Jonathan to spend the night, but when Jonathan started talking about his ass that way,

images of his dead lover flashed before his eyes. “Will you be able to go out to dinner

with us tomorrow night?” He didn’t want to fight again. He was tired of fighting.

Jonathan jumped off the table and reached down for his clothes. He didn’t even

mention spending the night, which left Ed slightly confused. “Probably,” Jonathan said,

“I don’t want to disappoint Noah.” Then he reached down between Ed’s legs and cupped

Ed’s penis and balls in the palm of his hand. Ed’s balls overflowed in his palm. “I’ll see

you in the morning,” he said. “Try to get some sleep tonight.”

Ed’s head jerked. When Jonathan grabbed his balls this way, a silky sensation

passed through his entire body. “I’ll try,” he said. “But I can’t promise anything. I just

don’t sleep much anymore.”

He kissed Ed goodbye and left the house naked again, holding his clothes to his

chest. On his way out the door, he turned to Ed and said, “By the way, I really like that

idea about the free clinic for dogs and cats.”

“You do?” Ed shook his head a few times. This was the last thing he’d expected

to hear. He would have assumed Jonathan had forgotten all about the clinic.

Jonathan shrugged his shoulders. Then he looked at Ed’s naked body and his head

went up and down a few times. “I think a free clinic like that would be good for you, and

for the entire community.”

“I think so, too,” Ed said. When Jonathan turned to leave and stepped down the back stairs, Ed wanted to go

after him and bring him back to spend the night. But he didn’t. He just stood there with

his hands on his hips, wondering why he couldn’t move his feet.

Chapter Seven

The first weekend in December, Noah announced to everyone that he’d been

chosen to perform in his school’s Christmas show. It was a Saturday, and they were

eating dinner in Chinatown. Jonathan wanted to take them all out, and this time he’d

insisted on paying.

Noah made his announcement softly and slowly a few minutes after their meals

had arrived. Ed and Lisa looked at each other, then at Noah. Jonathan congratulated him

and reached for his chopsticks. But he noticed Noah wasn’t smiling. He sat there staring

at his food, with his hands folded on his lap and his head bent down.

Jonathan and Noah were sitting next to each other. He put his hand on Noah’s

shoulder and asked, “What’s wrong, buddy?”

Noah shrugged his shoulders and continued to stare at his plate. “I think I made a

really big mistake this time. I shouldn’t have tried out. I’m not sure what I’m going to

do.”

“What kind of show is it, sweetie?” Lisa asked. She leaned forward with a set of

chopsticks in her right hand.

“A regular Christmas show,” Noah said. “I’m supposed to sing a solo.” Then he

looked at Ed and shrugged his shoulders. “It sounded like fun at the time. Remember,

Dad, when Jake and me did that song and dance at my old school?”

Ed gave Lisa a look, then took a deep breath. “Ah well,” he said. “You were both

very good.” Noah folded his arms across his chest and sat back in his seat. “Yeah, but I

couldn’t have done it without Jake. He helped me rehearse the whole thing.”

“I wish I could help you out,” Ed said, “but you know that I can’t even hum a

song, let alone sing one.” He looked at Lisa to see if she had any ideas.

She shrugged and said, “Maybe I can talk to Frank and Greg. I’ll bet they could

help you out, sweetie.”

Jonathan put down his chopsticks and tilted his head in Noah’s direction. “There’s

no need to get Frank and Greg involved,” he said. “I’m sure I can get you through this,

Noah.”

Ed and Lisa looked at each other, then stared at Jonathan. “You can?” Lisa asked.

Jonathan looked at them and smiled. “Of course I can,” he said. “I know how to

play the piano, and I was a theater major my first two years in college before I switched

to journalism.” He fake-punched Noah in the shoulder and said, “Stop worrying and eat

your dinner. We’ll start working on your solo tomorrow on the piano in your Dad’s living

room, and you’ll be great. I promise.”

Noah lifted his head and smiled at Jonathan, then he looked at Ed and said, “We

sure did get lucky this time, Dad.” He sat forward and picked up his chopsticks. “Because

I don’t know what we’d do without Jonathan around.”

Ed jerked his head and blinked. When he looked up, Jonathan smiled and

shrugged his shoulders.

After dinner, Ed drove them back to the guest house, where Jonathan’s rented car

was parked in the driveway. When Jonathan pulled his keys out of his pocket, Lisa

promised to drop Noah off at the house first thing Sunday morning so he and Jonathan could start working on the Christmas show. Then Jonathan kissed Lisa good night on the

cheek and told her he’d talk to her in the morning.

When Lisa and Noah were inside the house, Jonathan looked at Ed and said, “I

sure hope that piano is in tune, because if it’s not, you’d better prepare yourself for some

gruesome sounds tomorrow.” He was walking backwards toward his car, noticing how

sexy Ed looked that night.

Ed laughed. “I had it tuned the minute it arrived from New York,” he said. “It’s

fine.” He put his hands in his pockets and stared down at his shoes. “You can come back

tonight and see for yourself if you like.”

Jonathan knew he wasn’t inviting him back for a sing-along at the piano. They

hadn’t had sex since Wednesday. On Thursday there had been a problem with the new

doors that led from the living room to an outdoor terrace. The contractor had ordered the

wrong size and the old ones had already been removed. Ed had been livid, and he’d

thrown a temper tantrum that day. The stress couldn’t have been good for his blood

pressure, but it did make for some interesting film clips for the TV show. Jonathan

calmed him down and smoothed things over. The contractor wound up getting the correct

doors late Thursday night and worked until after midnight to get them installed. And on

Friday, they fixed the hole in the floor in the master bathroom, and didn’t finish until

seven o’clock in the evening. By that time, Noah and Lisa were waiting for them to go to

the movies.

Jonathan smiled. Ed looked good that night. He was wearing baggy navy shorts

and a cream-colored polo shirt. “I guess I could come back for a few minutes,” he said.

He had a secret gift for Ed in the back seat of his car. He’d ordered an unusual pair of underwear on the Internet that he thought looked really sexy and he was dying to see how

Ed would look in them.

“You’d better not follow me, though,” Ed said. “If Lisa or Noah is looking out the

window, they might get the wrong idea.”

When Ed said things like this, Jonathan wanted to kick him in the ass and go out

drinking in a San Francisco bar filled with good-looking gay men. But he swallowed

back and said, “I’ll turn in the opposite direction and circle the block once.”

A few minutes later, he pulled up behind Ed’s Range Rover and clicked off the

headlights. When he switched off the engine, Ed stepped out and walked to his door. Ed

opened the door and Jonathan reached to the back seat for a brown paper bag and smiled.

This was one of the little things Ed did that always gave him hope. Ed could have gone

into the house and not waited for him. He didn’t have to open the car door for him and

walk him to the house. But he always did.

Jonathan got out of the car and handed Ed the bag. “This is for you,” he said.

“When we get inside, I want you to go upstairs and put them on. I’ll wait for you in the

bedroom.”

Ed looked down at the bag and turned it back and forth. “What is it?”

Jonathan smiled. “It’s a surprise.” Then he lowered his voice to an almost

scolding tone and said, “And don’t give me any arguments. Put them on and come into

the bedroom so I can see them.”

He was learning how to handle him. With Ed, you had to act fast and leave no

room for explanation. While Ed was in the bathroom putting on the underwear, Jonathan removed all his

clothes and straightened out the covers on the bed. Evidently, Ed didn’t like to make beds,

but that didn’t bother Jonathan. He was so excited about seeing Ed in the underwear, his

penis was already erect. Before he got into bed, he turned the photo of Ed’s deceased

lover, Jake, in the other direction so he wouldn’t be staring at them. He knew Jake would

always be part of Ed’s life, but that didn’t mean his photo had to be there when they had

sex. Then Jonathan went down across the width of the bed on his stomach and leaned

forward on his elbows. He stared at the bathroom door and waited for Ed to come out. He

was glad they’d fixed the hole in the bathroom floor Friday, because Ed would have had

to go down the hall if they hadn’t.

And that would have ruined his grand entrance.

When the bathroom door finally opened, Ed stepped into the bedroom and walked

toward the bed. He was wearing a tight pair of gray long johns with buttons that ran from

his neck down to his penis. But they weren’t traditional long johns. This pair had short

pants and no sleeves. You could see the muscles in his hairy legs pop and bulge; his

biceps rounded and jerked. The fabric was a thin, elastic jersey that bunched up in his

crotch and hugged his genitals. The outline of his thick penis rested to the left; he was

still soft. He looked at Jonathan and his head went down. He didn’t seem to know where

to put his hands.

Jonathan stared at him and smiled. “You look so fucking hot,” he said.

“I feel a little silly,” Ed said, looking up and down his body. His arms were spread
