The Alpha's Pulse (Paranormal Shifter Werewolf Romance) (2 page)

On the porch the morning air hit him in the face. He hadn’t realized he was so hot until the drastic change in temperature made him shiver.

Taking a deep breath, Vance growled. His eyes began to survey the surroundings of the house, darting from the street to the side of the house, to all the cars parked along the curb. He knew
they
were there--the other wolves--but they were concealing themselves behind their
blaeja
.

“Wilkos.” he snarled the word out of his mouth. “Damn.”

What the hell were those wolves doing around this house? Was it the scent? The scent was too strong for them to be poking around elsewhere.

Taking his phone out of his pocket, he dialed his head of security. He wasn’t taking any chances leaving her alone with those sons-a-bitches hanging around.

“John. Hey, yeah, I know it's early. I’m sending you an address. Have a few boys watch the house until I say different. I want her safe. By any means necessary. Is that understood?”

“Yes Alpha. Right away.” John's gruff voice scratched through the phone.

Hanging up, Vance covered the house in his strongest
blaeja
. He didn’t want to take any chances. He walked the perimeter of the house, making sure to touch most everything he passed, leaving his scent around the property.

They would smell him. He was positive they knew he was here, but he wanted to make sure. He went to his car to wait for his men to get there.

The sun was just coming up when he spotted the black SUV pull up, recognizing two of his Beta’s. They got out and greeted him.

“I want you guys here until I say different. If she leaves, so do you. Don’t be seen. Just make sure nothing happens to her.”

“Who’s after her?” Matt asked.

“Wilkos. I don’t know what that filth wants with her, but I intend to find out.”

Chapter 2

“He knew we were there.” Yancy lounged in a chair in the corner of his Alphas office.

“How the hell did he see you?”
The Alpha Patrick asked. He kept his voice a thin whisper but only a fool could miss the anger beneath his deceptively calm demeanor.

“He didn’t.”  The lazy drawl was Ira’s. He sat on the couch munching an apple. “I tried to get close, see if she was sleep so we could go inside. Soon as I did, he came out on the porch. Didn’t even know he was there till it was too late.”

The growl that came from Patrick would have sent lesser Betas running. But Yancy and Ira had known him since they were cubs. The man’s temper was familiar to them yet still not to be trifled with.

“He’s placed some Betas on her. Haven’t seen them before.” Ira said.

“Nothing’s changed. I still want her. If Weiss wants to get in the way, then so be it. Watch her and wait for an opening. Take her as soon as you can.”

The men nodded and left the office. Patrick picked up his drink. His seekers had seen the woman in his future. Her blood was the key to him gaining power and rising in the ranks among the packs. Every hundred years there was a special human woman born. Her blood was very powerful. The woman was like a ghost, hard to find and even harder to keep. She had only been found twice before in her known existence. His seekers had picked up on her because her location was so close. He would have her, and he’d be damned if Vance was about to mess it up for him.

Rolling over in bed, Elissa groaned. Her body ached in places she didn’t even know she had. Last night had been a roller coaster with more highs than lows.

Smiling to herself, she got out of bed and went to shower. She had the day off and figured she would do some shopping. Putting on a pair of loose cargo pants and a tank, she let her hair air dry.

Once in town, she stopped for a quick a burger. Munching on her meal, she didn’t even notice the black SUV trailing her.

“Who is she anyway?” Caleb said. “Why is she so special?”

“I don’t know,” Matt said, “But the Alpha wants her safe. Why the sudden lack of interest in you responsibilities, Caleb?”

“I’m cool, man. Just curious as to whom she is.” He took a swig of his energy drink and stayed quiet.

They followed her around town while she shopped and ran errands. Pretty boring stuff if you asked him. Caleb knew that the Wilkos pack was a dangerous lot, but they hadn’t scented or seen them at all today. And the woman was just a human. What could his Alpha want with a human anyway?

He sat his seat back and closed his eyes. “I’m taking a quick nap. You cool by yourself?”

“Cool as a cucumber.” Matt looked at Caleb, smiled and shook his head. The pups never change.

The next couple of days were the same. If she wasn’t running around the town, she was working at the bar. They made frequent check-ins with Vance, who was out of town with his band.

There had been no sign of the men Wilkos had sent. Matt hoped that they were going to leave the woman alone. He didn’t know why they wanted her, but he could sense the woman meant something to his Alpha and would keep her safe until told differently.

Elissa sat at home watching T.V. She had just got off work at the bar. Her coworker Vanessa had come in to take over for her tonight. Vanessa was a god send. She always came in the bar and took over at the best times, clearing orders and taking new orders more quickly than any other employee.

She had been home about an hour. She was freshly showered and was now curled up in a ball on the couch channel surfing. She passed on a show that was sure to be a tear jerker. But when she flipped to VH1, she saw a face that made her breath catch.

“Vance!” Mr. Tall and Sexy from the bar was on stage with the band Animal, singing his heart out. She knew she had seen him before!

She had to tell somebody. Anybody. Picking her phone up she went through her contact list to call Vanessa. Her finger stopped mid-scroll. His number was there. He must have saved it when she was asleep.

Staring at her phone, she went back and forth deciding what to do. He had saved the number, so he obviously wanted her to call. But what if she did and he had already forgotten about her. She didn’t want to seem like a dumb struck fool.

Just call Elissa. He probably won't even answer. Just hit the call button.

She pressed call and put the phone to her ear. He answered on the third ring.

“Hello?”

Her heart shot up to her throat and made it impossible to for any words to come out, not that she had any to say.

“Hello?” He said again.

“Uh, hey Vance, it’s Elissa." Her voice squeaked.
Get a grip, woman.
"You probably don’t even remem-”

She could hear the smile on his face. “I was wondering when you would call me. How've you been?”

His voice still sent shivers down her spine. She found herself smiling in spite of her nerves.

“I’ve been good. I, uh, just saw you on T.V. Why didn’t you tell me?”

She heard a soft chuckle. “I like having a girl attracted to me for me and not my fame.”

“I see. I still feel silly.”

“Don’t. It's perfectly fine. I’ve been waiting for you to call me, beautiful. For a moment I was afraid that you'd missed my number in your phone.”

“And why are you so anxious to talk to me, sir?” She said with a hint of laughter in her voice.

“You made quite an impression. I had a good time with you the other night. I wouldn’t mind spending more time with you.”

Elissa thought on that for a minute. If he only wanted sex from her, she should feel offended. But truth be told, he was good--no, amazing--and she wouldn’t mind seeing him again.

“You made one on me as well. To be honest, I thought that was a onetime thing. That I would never see you again.”

“That is out of the question.” He said laughing. “You'll definitely be seeing me again, love. You can count on that.”

“Are you always so sure of yourself?”

“Only when I know what I want.”

Elissa laughed. “Okay, so tell me Vance, what is it that you want?”

Silence teased her before Vance finally said. “You.”

Just to hear him say it sent heat racing to the middle of her thighs. Flashbacks went through her head of the night they spent together. It was one of the most amazing nights of her life. He had done things to her body that sent her falling over the edge of ecstasy over and over again. She licked her lips at the memory.

“Elissa?” His voice pulled her back to the present.

“Yes?”

“I asked if you were you free tonight.”

She looked at the clock. It was only 9:30. She had no plans and she could use some company.

“Yes, I am.”

“Good. I want to see you. Let's say half an hour?”

Half an hour? She looked down at her simple clothes and panicked. “Make it an hour and a half.”

“Done.” The line clicked dead

Elissa hung up the phone and jumped off the couch, grabbing the blanket she had been sitting under as she went. She rushed through her home and cleaned things as she passed them. She lit candles and put a bottle of wine in the freezer.

She went to her room and looked in her closet. She wasn’t a fool to think he was coming over for conversation. No. He was coming over to pick up where they left off the other night.

She leafed through her clothes until she found a simple dress that played up her breasts and ass. Running a brush through her hair, she let the natural waves fall around her shoulders and stop at the middle of her back.

When she was finished, she sat back in the living room and waited for Vance to show up. She hoped when he got there, her nerves would be back under control

Vance pulled up exactly on time. Elissa met him at the door.

“Hey you.” She said.

“You look beautiful.” He looked her up and down, letting his eyes linger on the curves that her dress hugged. She stepped back to him in and led him over to the couch.

“Would you like some wine?” She offered.

“No I’m fine. You're intoxicating enough for me.”

She smiled at him. “Thank you.”

He nodded and sat back on the couch. He knew she was waiting for him to get things started but he figured he would have a little fun with the situation. He wanted her to ask for it.

She sat down next to him and clasped her hands around her knee. He could tell she was nervous, and thought it was cute.

“You're quiet tonight.” He said.

“Sorry, my nerves are getting the best of me.”

“I’m the same old Vance. The one who knocked your socks off the other night.”

She turned a bright red and slapped him on the shoulder.”

“Am I wrong?

“No.” She chewed her lip and darted a quick glance at him.

Scooting closer to her on the couch, he trailed his fingers up and down her shoulder. “And…how did I make you feel, sweet Elissa?”

She looked down at the contact. “Good.”

“How good?” His eyes flashed gold again for a brief moment.

“Really good.”

He moved his fingers to the underside of her breast. He lightly flicked his thumb over her nipple and smiled at her sharp intake of breath.

“Tell me, Elissa. Tell me what you want.”

She had closed her eyes from his touch. A moan escaped her throat.

“Tell me, love. What is it you want me to do to you?” His hand worked under her dress, peeling it away slowly to expose her breast. His head lowered and his scorching lips hovered over her nipple as a gentle gust hardened the peak.

“Make love to me." She closed her eyes.

Vance came up her body and kissed her, pressing her back up against the couch. He lifted her dress and let his hand cup the very wet sex that lay there waiting for him.

“You are so fucking beautiful.” he said.

His hand moved slowly down her belly and slipped beneath the soft hem of her panties. A finger brushed over her mound and Elissa shivered, snapping her legs together instinctively. But Vance's hand, so sure and confident of their actions, pushed forward and teased her legs apart. A single finger rubbed over her slit and drew forth a drop of nectar--sweet and slipper--from deep within her. Slowly, he worked his way forward until the tip pushed inside her and found her fountain. The moisture soaked his hand.

"Vance..." She breathed as he pushed deeper, the finger curling ever so slightly to beckon her closer to him. His breath hovered over her neck and she moved closer to meet him. He loved the little sounds she was making. His member strained against his pants and his wolf snarled inwardly, begging to be freed.

With a finger still in Elissa, Vance got down on his knees in front of the couch and pulled Elissa panties off. She had a thing for lace and the soft material was rich with her womanly scent.
