Chapter Twelve

Selena noticed that Megan was not her usual talkative self at work anymore, and that she wasn’t in Ethan’s office as frequently as before. She was walking past her desk and had a strange sensation to be the nag for once.

“Pretty quiet, aren’t you?” Selena asked the girl.

“Excuse me,” she said as she got up from her desk and walk to the photocopier. Selena stood there until she got back. “Is there anything in particular I can help you with?”

“I was just wondering how it is that your meddling suddenly halted,” Selena said.

“Would you prefer me to continue?” Megan asked with a bored look on your face. “And while you are standing here, I wonder, does anyone know that you are carrying his child?”

Selena smiled. “A little bit louder please, I don’t think everyone heard how bitter you sound.”

“You aren’t even denying it,” the girl spat. “For all the times you acted like you were better than everyone else, you are the biggest slut of us all.”

“Careful Megan, someone might hear and actually believe you. I notice you aren’t in Mr. Bloomfield’s office as much lately. Has he grown tired of you? Tsk tsk tsk, what a shame. My baby has nothing to do with him by the way, but I am glad he got rid of you,” she said as she walked off. When she did, she heard when Megan broke a pencil, but for now, and for the first time, victory was hers.

Life at the office was more peaceful everyday now, and though everyone wondered, and some asked, about the paternity of her child, she never spoke a word of truth. But to be honest, no one knew anything about her personal life, so any man was as good a guess as the other for all they cared. All except for Megan, who had been watching Ethan like a hawk. Selena thought she should perhaps be more guarded around the woman; she may form alliances with Eva to their detriment.

In the meantime, Ethan was growing pretty restless as the days wore on. He didn’t crave the women as much as he did before. His thoughts were utterly consumed by the woman who sat not so far from him who was carrying his first child. He had always envisioned how that would be, but he never thought it would unfold in the manner in which it did. The women were all suspicious of his behavior lately, which was less accommodating than usual, and some had already turned to greener pastures. He knew they hadn’t wanted him to begin with, not in the true sense of the word. They were only after what they could get, and he gave them what they wanted while he benefited from them, symbiotic relationships. But now he had grown either too bored, or he was falling in love with Selena Patterson. He shivered at the thought and the way it frightened him. But then his mind wandered to a grassy lawn, where white chairs, bells, and tapestries hung waiting to celebrate their union, and a little boy walking before her with a ring on a pillow. He smiled at the thought, even though he didn’t think he would ever think of marriage or a wedding in the same way again. Not after Eva. But speak of the devil and the devil shall appear, for in that moment his phone rang, and she informed him she needed to see him after work.

All the beauty of the thoughts that were floating in his mind now was replaced by darkness and thorny surfaces. He was darn near close to hating Eva, and he hated already she bore his name. But not for much longer.

At close of day, he called Selena’s extension and informed her he would be working late and would visit her when he was through. He didn’t mention Eva to cause her unnecessary alarm. Then he sat back in his huge leather chair and awaited the executioner. She came when the office was empty, and he was all alone.

She walked in looking like a model from a Paris catwalk, and Ethan sat upright as he watched her draw closer to him. She didn’t stop at the desk, but instead opened her trench coat to reveal perfect ivory skin with splashes of lace in appropriate places. “Why darling,” she said as she came around to him and pushed his chair back. “It’s been a long time.”

“Eva what are you doing? And you smell like you have been drinking,” he said as he sniffed the alcohol that laced her body.

“Can’t a girl get some love from her husband?” She asked as she locked her hands behind his neck.

“Eva, if this is why you came, you need to leave,” he said. “For the last couple of weeks, you have been trying to destroy me, and now you want to make love to me?”

“I need to make love to you,” she told him. “And you are going to, because...I know...all the places...that will make you...tremble,” she said as she kissed and nipped at him between words. And as she ended, he shivered and closed his eyes.

“We shouldn’t,” he said as she brought her lips to his.

But Eva paid no attention to him, and try as Ethan might, he could not get her to leave. He had always found her exceptionally beautiful until she had turned ugly from the inside out. “Eva, stop,” he said. But his feeble words weren’t convincing enough. She slid to the carpet and unbuckled his belt, letting his manhood fly free. Then she took it with both hands and massaged it, before burying it inside her mouth. Ethan’s pleas were even weaker than before, and as he rose in her hands, she stood and stretched her tall legs across him, and he sank inside.

“Doesn’t that feel good?” She asked him. “You know you want me, Ethan,” she said as she moved about on his lap, his dick swirling around inside her the entire time.

Ethan could stand no more, and even though he was close to hating her, he couldn’t deny how good her body felt now, and he gripped her breasts and squeezed them tight as she moaned and rocked even harder now. He held her hips then and helped her along as she bounced on him repeatedly. And then like a dam that was cracked, he broke and flooded her with parts of him he was still reluctant to give to her. Eva waited until he had stopped shaking before she stood, wrapped her coat around her, and moved to the door.

She gripped the knob and then looked back at Ethan, still sitting there looking as if he had seen a ghost. “You always did want a child,” she said as she disappeared behind the door.

As soon as it locked, Ethan seemed to be released from his trance, and he slapped his hand across his face, whispering to himself, “What have I done?” He was in no mind to see Selena after that, and he took to the bar instead to drown his sorrows and pray Eva would not get pregnant. Looking back, he could see that was her intentions in coming, and he was angry at himself for falling for that. He had a weakness for beautiful women he could not deny, and it would prove to be his ruin.

The days that followed were odd ones, and Selena couldn’t understand his silence. She tried to get him to talk, but he only told her he was alright and it had to do with business, so there was no need to worry. But her female instincts told her she had every reason to worry.

“Are you coming over later?” She asked him one evening before she left, while pretending to want him to sign a stack of papers.

“I am not sure yet; I have a few things to go over first,” he said. Even his words felt heavy as they hung in the air.

“What’s going on?” She asked. “Ever since last week you have been acting... distracted. What’s bugging you?”

“Nothing, just work,” he lied.

“Is it Eva?” She pressed. Selena was concerned the woman may have found out about them and was pressuring him. “Does she know?”

“Know about what?” He asked. “Oh, no, not that I am aware of,” he said when he got her meaning. “I can handle her.”

“Well something else is bothering you, and it is obvious, but I can’t make you tell me, so I guess when you are ready you will.”

“Don’t worry about me, Selena; you just take care of yourself and the baby,” he said to her and turned to a pile of papers he had been poring over. She took that as an indication he was done, so she walked back out of the office.

“Something is wrong with him,” Selena told Krystal later that evening.

“What do you mean?” she asked her.

“I’m not sure. He just seems distracted, like he is concerned about something he doesn’t want me to know about.”

“Do you think it is another woman?” she asked.

Selena laughed. “Ethan isn’t known for hiding his girls; in fact, he is known for doing the exact opposite. No, I don’t think there is another woman that could have him this focused.”

“Then what do you think it could be? Is anything happening at work? Did he lose out on a major deal or something like that?”

“Could be, but I wouldn’t know,” she admitted.  “I am not privy to higher level decisions, not even when I am sleeping with the boss it seems.”

“Maybe he has PMS like us girls,” Krystal joked. “Don’t worry about it. I am sure he will come around soon. If he is hiding something, you will know in due time.”

“Yeah, that’s what I am afraid of,” she said as she rubbed her stomach. At that moment the baby began to move, and she tensed as her stomach tightened under the pressure he caused. “Ooh little guy, hold on,” she whispered.

“Are you alright?” Krystal asked as she saw how tense she had become.

“I think he needs his dinner. If I had a quarter for every time you ask me that,” she smiled.

“What? I worry a lot,” Krystal laughed. “Just wait there; I’ll make you something,” she said as she began to rummage around in the refrigerator and cupboards. She emerged a few minutes later with a cold chicken sandwich. “This is what I could manage at short notice. Apple juice?”

“Yes, thanks,” she said as she tried to make herself comfortable, but the bigger he grew, the harder it became for her to relax. He was always moving, especially at nights, and she hoped he would give her a break when he was finally out.

But things did not make any turn for the better. Ethan still came around and took her places. Some foods she would normally like, like the pasta she normally ordered at her favorite Italian restaurant, didn’t go down quite as easily as before. But even with that, their dates in public grew significantly less the bigger her stomach grew.

“I’ve seen people looking, and I would like to avoid any suspicion as much as possible,” he told her one evening when he brought her take out.

“No, that’s fine,” Selena told him. “I just wish things could have been different, but we didn’t plan any of this, right?”

“No, we didn’t, but know that there isn’t anything I want more,” he smiled as he set the bags on the counter. “If there is any way I could change things, I would.”

“I know, you don’t have to explain,” she said to him.

“Maybe when this is all over, we can go to another city and start over,” he smiled.

“Do you really mean that, or are you trying to placate me for being so emotionally distant lately?” she asked.

Ethan laughed. “Yeah, I know how I must have appeared, but it was all with good reason. I think I will be fine from here on out. Now, are you going to eat or not?” He asked.

“I think someone wants to,” she said as she opened the boxes and started dumping portions of meat, vegetables, and creamed Irish potatoes onto her plate. “Do you want some?”

“Nah, I already ate,” he told her.

“Okay,” she said as she went about consuming everything in sight.

“You really have an appetite, don’t you?” He asked as he chuckled.

“I do tonight,” she admitted. “It’s like there are things I can’t stand to eat or smell anymore, things I normally could, so I don’t get to eat my favorite things as much. But when I do find something I can, I eat too much.”

“Well, at least now we know what he likes,” he said. “He can have it all the time.”

“That would make me into a monster,” she said. “He will just have to make do with fruit and water some. When he is out, I still have a figure I’d like to maintain.”

“I think you would look sexy in anything and at any time, even after childbirth,” he grinned.

“Easy for you to say; you wouldn’t be the one sporting fat that refuses to leave.”

Just then his phone rang. He moved away from her to answer, and returned after a few minutes to tell her he had to leave. “Business call,” he told her, but by the look on his face, she knew that could not be true, but she didn’t make a fuss about it.

Ethan felt as if he was in a whirlwind and was tossing about among the debris. He was not sure how or when it happened, but suddenly he didn’t feel in charge of his life anymore. He kept allowing others to dictate his fate, and it was about time he stopped the games. Eva had been crawling all over him, wanting a divorce that she had filed for at one minute, and in the other she was trying to pacify him. Maybe he would have considered letting her back in before Selena, but not now. She sensed there was someone else, and maybe that was why she tried to dig her claws further into him. Now she may be carrying his child as well, and if that was the case, he would have to tell Selena. And then what? He could see it in her eyes that she knew something was going on, but he couldn’t find the words to say. He had grown too fond of her, maybe he had even begun to love her, and he knew he could not look her in the eyes and tell her until there was nothing else he could do. For now he would hide and hope there would be nothing to tell. He hadn’t heard from Eva in two weeks on that matter, and he was beginning to get more relaxed in the knowledge that nothing had happened.

Selena watched him go, and as his lips brushed against her cheek, she could feel how heavy his breath rested on her skin. She wished he would tell her, but she also knew he was stubborn and could not be forced. So she chose rather to go about her life, with or without the knowledge of what he was hiding.
