Common Symptoms in the First Few Days

The following symptoms are very common at the beginning of the preparation phase and may continue through the first few days of the six-week program as you eliminate gluten and dairy. Don’t worry, these symptoms are indicative that your body is eliminating toxins and are a good sign!

Achy, flulike feeling

Fatigue

Headaches

Hunger

Irritability

Itchy skin

Nausea

Offensive body odor

Sleep difficulties (too much or too little)

These symptoms can occur for a number of reasons.

 

First, eliminating food allergens like gluten and dairy often cause a withdrawal reaction, much like withdrawal from other addictive substances like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, or heroin. We are often most addicted to the foods we are allergic to. This causes an allergy-addiction cycle. Getting off those allergens can cause a brief, flulike achy syndrome that may last one to three days.
