About the Authors
Gabriel B. Costa
is a Roman Catholic priest, ordained for service in 1979 for the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. He is also a mathematician and is on an extended academic leave from Seton Hall University. He is a professor of mathematical sciences at the United States Military Academy, located at West Point, New York, where he also functions as an associate chaplain. He is a member of SABR and has published in
The Baseball Research Journal
,
Elysian Fields Quarterly
and other journals. He has been a Yankees fan since he was 10 years old in 1958.
Michael Huber
is an associate professor of mathematics at Muhlenberg College. He was a co-teacher of sabermetrics at the United States Military Academy with Father Gabriel Costa from 1996 to 2006. His book,
West Point’s Field of Dreams: Major League Baseball at Doubleday Field
, was published in 2004 by Vermont Heritage Press, chronicling 87 exhibition games played between Army cadets and major league baseball teams. A lifelong baseball fan, he enjoys rooting for the Baltimore Orioles, attending minor league games, and modeling rare events in baseball, such as triple plays, no-hitters, and hitting for the cycle.
John T. Saccoman
is an associate professor of mathematics and computer science at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He team-teaches one of the earliest known sabermetrics courses there with its founder, Father Gabriel Costa. His work has appeared in numerous SABR publications, including
Deadball Stars of the National League
,
Deadball Stars of the American League,
and
The Fenway Project
. He has contributed biographies of Gil Hodges and Willie Mays, among others, to the SABR Bio Project. A charter member of the Elysian Fields (NJ) Chapter of SABR, John resides in northern New Jersey with his son (and fellow Mets fan) Ryan and Bosox-loving wife Mary.
