Chapter Fourteen

Phoenix debated on what to do next for several minutes on
her way to the bridge. The smart thing to do would be to drop it and stay away
from Isaiah from now on. She could think of nothing he could say to justify
committing a crime. Taking several deep breaths, she tried to remind herself
that he might not be doing anything illegal, but that did little to ease her
concerns. She’d specifically heard him tell Sam they might get shot.

These thoughts plagued her the entire drive back to her
apartment. “It’s none of my business,” she told herself as she tossed her purse
and keys on the coffee table in her front room. “If he wants to risk his life,
or risk getting arrested, I am not going to stress about it. That’s right!” she
told her reflection in the bedroom mirror, as she tossed the box of condoms
she’d bought onto her bed. The fact that she’d stopped to pick them up just
proved she wasn’t ready to give up on Isaiah.

Decision made, she grabbed her keys and purse before heading
out the front door again.

Chapter Fifteen

Isaiah still wasn’t happy about breaking into Sam’s building
when he hadn’t had time to study the street at night first. Admittedly, he was
also annoyed that he’d been forced to end his evening with Nikki. He could be
inside Nikki’s hot body instead of skulking in the shadows on a cold night.
When she’d offered to let him take her home, he’d been beyond tempted. He also
knew she was going to worry until he told her the truth about what was going
on. Since dropping her off, he’d thought a lot about her reaction and come to
the conclusion that he was an ass for not telling the truth about what he was
doing tonight. Professional or not, he shouldn’t have worried her, and he
wanted to go to her now. Then again, that would mean beginning his explanation
with how the men he’d paid to follow her home had told him where she lived, and
that was definitely something he should admit to another time.

“The street is pretty clear,” Sam told him. They were at the
entrance of an alley close to Sam’s building, one with a good view of the
front. They’d already scouted around the back and sides, just to make sure they
hadn’t missed anything. The plan was to go in from the front of the building.
There was no access from the side, and the back entrance had surprisingly good
security, considering how lax it was in the front.

Technically, Sam wasn’t involved in the break-in. He’d just
follow along and watch the areas Isaiah exploited. Sam didn’t do well sitting
things out, which was part of the reason Isaiah had chosen to have Sam help him
check the sides and back of the building. It gave Sam something to do, making
it much less likely he’d get in the way. That would be a problem since Sam
wasn’t in on the details of Isaiah’s plan. For the most part, Sam would be in
the way, not that Isaiah would ever tell him that.

Isaiah’s phone vibrated in his pocket. Normally, he’d have
turned it off, but he was worried about Nikki and wanted his people to let him
know if there was a problem. Sam gave him a sharp look when he pulled the phone
from his pocket. Sure enough, it was a message from his people, and Nikki was
in trouble—the kind that had him tempted to turn her over his knee. Until
recently, he’d never really understood his brother’s love of spanking, but he
had to admit that picturing Nikki’s bare ass up in the air as it wiggled around
was turning him on. He blamed Drew for painting that tantalizing image.

“Problem?” Sam asked.

“You could say that,” he muttered when Nikki raced across
the street toward them.

“Isaiah, don’t do this,” she pleaded, wrapping her arms
around his waist.

Sam started laughing. “Real smooth, my friend. You got
tailed by a barista. Either you’re losing your touch, or the rumors of your
greatness are exaggerated.”

“Nikki, this isn’t what you think,” he assured her, ignoring
Sam’s teasing.

“You’re breaking into a building in the middle of the
night,” she accused, pulling back from him. “This is insane! It’s stupid! I
heard enough of your conversation with Sam to know what’s going on. That’s why
you were hanging out at the coffee shop, isn’t it? You were just watching this
building to plan all of this. Don’t let Sam pressure you into committing a
crime. A real friend would never let you risk being killed or going to jail.”

Before she could draw more attention to them, Isaiah grabbed
her and spun them so her back was against the wall and his hand was covering
her mouth. Leaning in close to her ear, he spoke quietly. “Listen to me, Nikki.
This is my job. I was hired to break into this building.”

“By me,” Sam added, holding a pen light in one hand and his
employee badge that listed him as head of corporate security in the other.

Nikki’s eyes widened, and Isaiah finally removed his hand
from her mouth. “You aren’t a college student?” she asked.

He shook his head, knowing this was where she’d realize he’d
been lying to her. Sadly, he’d still be lying to her after this.

“And you aren’t a thief?”

He shook his head again, his temper rising. “What the hell
are you doing out here in the middle of the night when you’re in danger? Why
are you risking your safety like this?”

“I already told you I’m not in any danger,” she foolishly
argued.

“Don’t lie to me,” he warned. Isaiah didn’t generally get
angry, but he was furious, and that emotion was mixed with the crazy arousal he
always experienced around Nikki. “I am beyond pissed at you for putting your
safety at risk for no damn good reason,” he practically growled before turning
to Sam. “We’ll reschedule this.”

Sam grinned and nodded. “Have fun!”

Isaiah didn’t reply; he merely grabbed Nikki’s hand and
guided her down the street to the alley where he’d parked Caitlin’s old car.
While she didn’t pull her hand away, she looked angry at him for his attitude,
and he was glad. They needed to have this out. He needed to know what was going
on so he could protect her. Now that he could tell her the truth about what he
did for a living, she had to believe he was capable of keeping her safe.

“Isaiah! My car is parked back there!” she argued.

“Is it locked?” he asked without slowing down.

“Yes,” she snapped like he’d just asked her a stupid
question.

“Then it will still be here when I take you to work in the
morning,” he ground out.

“Where are we going?” she demanded, finally trying to get
free of his grip.

“Your place. My place. Doesn’t matter where we go, but we
are going to have a long talk about what is going on,” he told her again.

“You do not get to tell me what to do!” she shouted. “I
invited you to spend the night with me, but you were too busy playing burglar
with Sam. Then you get on my case for assuming the worst when you couldn’t even
be bothered to tell me the truth about what’s going on. Fuck you, Jordan
Drake!”

“My name isn’t Jordan. It really is Isaiah.”

“Of course,” she muttered. “Everything you’ve told me is a
lie, isn’t it? Was this all just some big game to you?”

Isaiah stopped walking and turned to look at her. His mouth
opened, and then he closed it before letting out a weary sigh. “Yes, I’ve lied
to you about a lot of things because that is part of my job. People pay me to
check their security for flaws, and that involves a lot of research. I’m
well-known in my industry, so I assume a different identity while I do the research,
and I do my best to remain anonymous. Your coffee shop was the last place I
should have picked to work, but I couldn’t stay away from you. I get that you
can’t have more, and I can’t have more, but fuck me if I don’t want it so damn
much I ache. I’ve wanted you from the moment I laid eyes on you, and that
desire only gets stronger the more I’m around you.”

Nikki’s mouth hung open for a moment before she finally
spoke. “I should go home,” she said softly. “Alone. I should go home alone.”

“But you don’t want to, do you?” he asked, opening the car
door for her.

“No,” she admitted as she slid into the car. “I just want to
be with you.”

Isaiah shut her door and hurried to his side of the car,
determined to get out of the area before she had time to think about this
anymore and insist he take her back to her car. If she’d refused to go with
him, he would have let her go, but he had no intention of giving her any time
to change her mind now that she’d agreed.

“Maybe we should go to your place,” she suggested.

“You’ll need clothes for work in the morning,” he reminded
her.

She nodded and gave him her address. He had no idea what was
running through Nikki’s mind, but he wasn’t done entertaining that spanking
fantasy. Then his mind wandered, and he wondered how she’d react if he pulled
her across his lap and spanked her. He knew some women enjoyed that sort of
thing, so she might like the idea. He was definitely going to test out this
fantasy with Nikki if she was game, but not tonight. Tonight, he was much too
desperate to get inside her body.

“What are you smiling about?” she asked, interrupting his
fantasy.

He hadn’t even noticed he was smiling, but it made sense
considering how much he was enjoying the thoughts playing out in his mind.
“Spanking you.”

“What?” she gasped.

“I’m thinking about spanking you,” he repeated. “That’s been
on my mind since I realized you’d gone out at night when you know you’re in
danger.”

“So, you want to punish me like some naughty child,” she
sputtered, sounding seriously pissed.

When they were at a stoplight, Isaiah turned so she could
see his eyes when he replied. “At first, that’s what it seemed like. Then I got
to thinking about how hot it would be to see your ass wiggling around while I
spank you, and now, what I want has nothing to do with punishing you.”

Nikki’s sexy mouth formed a silent ‘O’ as she stared back at
him. The light changed so Isaiah returned his attention to the road before
speaking again.

“Have you ever been spanked?” he asked.

“No!” she quickly responded.

“Do you want me to spank you? I’ve never actually considered
spanking a woman before,” he admitted. “That’s more my brother’s style, and I’m
pretty sure I should read up on it first so I do it right. Do you think there’s
an instruction book for this sort of thing?”

Nikki laughed. It was a little strained, but Isaiah sensed
she was starting to relax with him. “This is the strangest conversation I’ve
ever had.”

“What do you usually talk about when a guy takes you back to
your place?” he asked.

“I don’t date or sleep around,” she admitted.

“Are you a virgin?” The thought hadn’t even crossed his mind
until that moment. He knew there were women who saved their virginity for
marriage, even if that wasn’t as common as it had been in the past.

“No,” she told him. “I’m not a virgin, but I haven’t been
with anyone in a long time. Things are complicated in my life, and I don’t have
time for dating or sex.”

“Is it an ex-boyfriend who’s threatening you?” he asked.

When Nikki didn’t answer, he figured they weren’t getting
any further with this line of questioning. Isaiah decided to move away from the
topic of the danger she was in for a little while. “You never answered my
question earlier.”

“Which one?” she asked.

“I was referring to when I asked if you wanted me to spank
you. Would you like that?”

“Since thinking about it is turning me on, I guess I would,”
she responded hesitantly, before adding. “Probably. I mean, I’m not sure.”

“Then I guess we’ll have to find out together if we like
it,” he rasped out. “Not tonight. Tonight, I want you too much for games.”

Chapter Sixteen

After their spanking conversation, the rest of the ride back
to her place had been pretty quiet, which meant more time thinking about sex.
She should have been thinking of a way to reassure Isaiah that she wasn’t in
any danger, not all the things she wanted Isaiah to do to her and all the
things she wanted to do to Isaiah. Then her mind had wandered to more dangerous
territory when she’d realized that the reason she’d gone out to stop Isaiah
from making a huge mistake tonight had nothing to do with her attraction to him
and everything to do with the fact that she genuinely cared about him. After
parking in her carport, he walked around to open the door for her. Her
intention had been to open the door herself, but she’d sat there frozen in
place, trying to figure out how she’d come to care so much about a near
stranger in such a short time.

She honestly loved the fact that Isaiah lived in his own
world where he didn’t always remember social rules and asked things others
wouldn’t. She was still having trouble believing their spanking discussion and
his decision to research it. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he’d also told her
his brother was into spanking. It’s not that she was so prudish that she didn’t
realize these types of conversations happened, but they didn’t happen with her,
and she was pretty sure Isaiah didn’t normally have them with women.

Neither of them spoke as they walked up the stairs to her
apartment. While Isaiah had said he wanted to talk, something told her that
wasn’t going to happen any time soon. The sexual tension was so thick, she
imagined she could feel Isaiah’s arousal. This might be the only opportunity
she got to be with Isaiah, and she didn’t want to let it slip through her
fingers.

Eventually, he would insist that they talk about the danger
she was in, but there was no way she could share the truth without revealing
what she really was. Even if she decided to give it a shot and tell him what
she was and why her life choices had forced her to run from everything she
knew, he’d end up thinking she was crazy. That’s why her kind didn’t get
involved with humans, and why she felt so lonely being cut off from her people,
even if it had been her choice to leave that life behind.

With shaky hands, she opened the front door and walked in
ahead of Isaiah.

Isaiah set his laptop bag on her coffee table and then
reached up to adjust the glasses he no longer wore. “As much as I hate it, we
need to talk about a few things before we go any further. I don’t even know
where we should start,” he admitted. “I guess the first thing I need you to
understand is that I can’t have you telling people who I am just yet. This job
isn’t over. If I’d managed to get in tonight, I could have written up my report
and been done with the whole thing.”

“Would you have stopped coming to the coffee shop if you’d
finished the job tonight?” she asked, not sure she wanted to know the answer.

“That’s what I was supposed to do. Then again, I haven’t
done what I was supposed to do since I met you. Your shop wasn’t the best place
for me to work because it was hard to blend in there,” he explained. “There are
a million reasons I shouldn’t get involved with you in any way, but I’m still
here.”

That was it. She’d tried hard to stay away from him, but
Isaiah was too much temptation, and she’d been alone for too long. Even knowing
she couldn’t commit to him anymore than he could apparently commit to her, she
still wanted this short time with him. “Kiss me,” she commanded, moving forward
to press her palms against his chest.

“Are you sure?” he asked, and she knew he wasn’t asking
about the kiss. They both knew where a kiss would lead.

“I want you,” she breathed out, knowing it was a mistake she
couldn’t resist making.

“I’m still on edge,” he warned, backing her up toward the
wall of her living room. “This isn’t going to be some sweet lovemaking. Don’t
get me wrong. I have every intention of worshipping every inch of your body,
but this time, I need to fuck you.”

Phoenix moaned when her back pressed against the wall.
Isaiah put a hand on either side of her face, caging her in. His erection
pulsed behind the fabric of his jeans, and she wished he’d bend his knees
enough to rub the hard length of his cock against her clit.

“Tell me you want this,” he ordered.

“I want it,” she assured him.

Isaiah pulled back and looked around before taking her hand
and leading her to the bedroom. His eyes widened when they landed on the box of
condoms.

“Did you buy those for me?” he asked.

She nodded and licked her lips.

“Only a dozen?” he asked, which made her laugh.

“Are you telling me that won’t be enough for one night?” she
asked.

“Considering how much I want you, it might not,” he admitted
before claiming her mouth and ending all conversation.

Phoenix tugged at Isaiah’s shirt, and he released her mouth
just long enough for her to slip his shirt over his head and toss it across the
room. Then his mouth was on hers again. One of his hands slipped under her
shirt, grazing her achingly hard nipple through the fabric of her bra.

“Take it off,” he ordered against her lips, and she was more
than happy to obey. After she tossed her shirt on the floor, he shook his head.
“The bra, too. I’ve waited long enough to see your breasts.”

Reaching behind her to the clasp, she undid her bra, and let
it fall to the floor.

“Gorgeous,” Isaiah murmured, leaning forward to take one of
her nipples into his mouth and suckle it.

“Harder,” she pleaded, gripping his hair.

Isaiah bit down gently on her nipple, and she moaned at the
erotic sensation, which seemed to encourage him. His mouth alternated between
nipples—licking, sucking, and biting each one. She was so caught up in the
sensation of his mouth on her breasts that she hadn’t noticed him unbuttoning
her pants until she felt them and her underwear being pushed down.

Isaiah released her breasts to shove her pants the rest of
the way down before letting out a frustrated growl when he realized her shoes
were still on. Phoenix sat on the edge of the bed and removed them while Isaiah
stripped out of his remaining clothes. When she looked up, his erection was
right in front of her face.

Her mouth formed a silent ‘O’ at the site of him.

Isaiah chuckled. “I hope that means you’re happy with what
you see.”

Licking her lips, she nodded.

“Get those pants off, now,” he said urgently before reaching
out to tear open the condom box and grab one of the packets.

Phoenix kicked out of her pants and panties while Isaiah
rolled on the condom. When she started to scoot back onto the bed, he caught
her thighs and lifted until she flopped back onto the bed with her backside on
the very edge.

Bending his knees, Isaiah positioned the head of his dick at
her entrance and then watched as he sank into her body.

“You’re so tight,” he moaned, as he buried himself to the
hilt in her.

Sucking in a sharp breath, she wiggled against him, needing
him to move at the same time as it felt like she was too full. “Isaiah.” His
name came out with a needy whimper.

With one hand, he reached forward to stroke her clit until
she was panting and wiggling against him. The rough calluses on the tip of his
finger added to her pleasure, making her even more crazed with need. That’s
when he started moving inside of her. His finger stopped stroking her clit, and
he replaced it with his palm, putting delicious pressure on her clit as he
thrust into her body.

“Oh, Isaiah,” she moaned.

“You feel incredible, sweetheart,” he panted out as he slid
in and out of her body with deliberate strokes.

Phoenix wanted him to move faster, but her mind didn’t seem
to be functioning enough to form more than unintelligible moans and whimpers.
Her body tightened around him, struggling to reach her climax, which was just
out of reach.

Isaiah cursed softly and slowed his movements even more.
“You’re going to make me lose control,” he warned with ragged breaths.

“Please,” she finally managed to say, hoping he’d understand
what that one word meant.

“Not yet,” he told her, and she might have believed he
wasn’t as affected as her were it not for the tightness in his jaw. “I want to
enjoy you longer, but I’ll take care of you.”

Moving his hand from her clit, he licked two of his fingers,
making her whimper because she was now imagining his tongue stroking her
achingly aroused flesh. His wet fingers moved to stroke her clit while he
rolled his hips slowly against her, barely moving inside of her body.

Isaiah’s gaze was locked on her face, taking her reactions
as cues on how to touch her. When his fingers began to strum from side to side
as his slow thrusts became more forceful, Phoenix found herself arching off the
bed to try to get closer. Her hands clawed at the sheets. Eyes closed tightly,
she screamed and rode out the waves of her climax. Isaiah’s fingers gentled,
bringing her down from the edge while making her crave more of his touch.

When her eyes opened, she found him still watching her, and
her cheeks heated.

“You’re so beautiful,” Isaiah murmured before he started
moving inside of her body again.

Surprisingly, Phoenix was already close to her next orgasm.
This time, there was nothing tentative or slow about Isaiah’s movements.
Sliding his hands under her ass to lift her slightly off the bed, he thrust
into her, making her insides quiver.

Phoenix screamed again when her second orgasm hit. Isaiah
groaned as she spasmed around his dick. His movements became almost frantic,
and she knew he was close to the edge. This time, she studied his face, loving
the determined set of his jaw and the way he watched their joined bodies with
hooded eyes.

When Isaiah finally found his own release, his grip on her
ass tightened as his dick twitched inside of her.
