‘Fuck like monkeys,’ he said, grinning. Making my heart twist in my chest.

‘Read some letters.’

‘Oh … fun!’ Then he groaned melodramatically to make me laugh.

‘And then we’ll fuck like monkeys.’

He raised an eyebrow at me and this time when he said, ‘Oh fun,’ it came out as a lusty rumble that put the hair on the back of my neck up.

It was a quick shower – a hair wash with orange shampoo and a leg shave and a touch up on the hoo-ha so it was nice and smooth. Deke made me feel like a teenager. A horny teenager, hoping to get some action.

‘You’ve turned into a sex maniac,’ I said to myself, twisting my hair up in a towel. I put some cream on my face and found a clean pair of yoga pants with a bulldog stencilled on the leg. A thin, white, long-sleeve T-shirt that showed my nipples through the fabric; but I didn’t think it mattered. I combed out my wet hair and then heard a yelp at the door and cracked it open to let a lonely, but excited, Brutus in.

‘No watching,’ I told him. ‘No perverted sex spying on me.’

He looked at me like he understood but I was pretty sure he thought I’d told him I’d be feeding him Filet from here on out.

‘Talking to the dog already?’ said Deke.

‘I guess so.’

He was lounging in my doorway with a glass of wine. Looking yummy.

‘Hand it over,’ I said, my voice soft. But the bathroom amplified it and I started at how loud I sounded.

Deke handed me the wine and I took a swig before setting it on the back of the sink.

‘Now yours.’ I put my hand out.

He played like he was protecting his glass. ‘Greedy girl. You have your own.’

I eyed him up. Dark wash jeans, a bit baggy, but just baggy enough to show off the fine form underneath. A dark-blue pullover that zipped at the neck. It had a very thin line of taupe along the neck and somehow it added to the sexy effect. I wanted to touch the light knit, unzip the zipper, lay him out and ride him hard.

I swallowed and we both heard my throat click. ‘Give it to me.’

He did. I put it on the sink next to mine and grabbed the hem of his pullover, yanking it hard enough to stretch it some before he stepped in toward me and took me in his arms. His skin was warm under my hands when I shoved them beneath the fabric. The ridges and planes of his belly danced under my fingers when I stroked him. I pushed them higher, stroking his pecs and then thumbing his nipples until he hummed.

‘I thought we were going to fuck like monkeys after the letters,’ he said. Not touching me. Just staring me down with those espresso-coloured eyes.

‘I decided to change that round a little bit.’

That was all he needed to pull my nice soft T-shirt back over my head. My wet hair brushed my back and he got down on his knees to kiss my belly button, my hipbone, my stomach. ‘Did you?’

‘I did. And you know, I want you to do me in here,’ I said, touching his hair with my fingertips. Watching the almost too long waves ripple under my stroking hand.

‘You do?’ he said, but it was a knowing, teasing tone. ‘Why is that?’

My yoga pants surrendered to his seeking hands and I shimmied my hips like a belly dancer for him as he pushed them low and finally off. When his mouth found me, I gasped, the sound bouncing around the small black and white room. I smiled.

His tongue slid along my slit, smothered my clit, sucked at me and I sighed, ‘I like the acoustics.’

‘You do, do you?’ His tongue snaked over me again and he nudged the hard knot of my clit over and over again until I felt the first tentative twinge of release. I moved to meet his mouth, relishing the alternating scrape and slide of his teeth over my nether lips. The tender skin sang with every single stroke of his tongue.

‘I do. I think … I think –’ My breath was wild in my lungs and I felt my thighs shaking as he pushed them just a bit farther apart.

‘What do you think, Farrell?’

‘I think –’

His fingers caressed my inner thighs and cool chills raced along my skin. Then Deke pushed his fingers into me, testing me, sucking my clit at the same time so I gave a sharp cry and came hard, anchoring myself with my fingers twisted in his hair.

‘I think it will sound awesome when I come.’ Finally the words came but I was already dropping to my knees and helping him with his clothes.

‘Condom?’

I grabbed a box under the sink, still unpacked from the move, and rummaged. Waving the foil packet, I laughed when he snatched it from me.

‘Wait, wait.’ I dropped to my hands and knees and leaned in to take the tip of his cock between my lips. That sweet–salt tang of pre-cum coated the tip of my tongue and Deke said my name. A rough burst of sound from him that he followed with a hum.

I sucked him in as deep as I could, my arms trembling a little, my ass in the air.

‘That is the most amazing mouth ever,’ he chuckled. He forced himself farther into my throat and reached out to smooth his hands along my spine. My skin responded with electric tingles where he touched me.

He tickled low over my back and then stroked my ass so that I rose up to meet him, feeling a fresh, building need in my cunt. I needed him in me. Soon.

I was lost in this fairy tale of men who wanted me, men I wanted; a need that was almost magical and mystical in its intensity. Unsure of whether it was the adventure of a fresh start or them, I pushed the thought away.

I licked the thick vein that ran the back of his thick cock and felt him jerk a little, grabbing twin hunks of my wet hair to guide my mouth.

‘Fuck me, fuck me, fuck me,’ I mumbled around him.

‘What’s that, darling?’ He pulled free of my lips and I chased him with the tip of my tongue so he hissed a little. Whether it was from the feel or the sight of me, I didn’t know.

‘Fuck me,’ I said. My voice was all need and trust. And it humbled me.

Deke was a mind fuck.

‘Get on the tub,’ he said.

I didn’t argue. I crawled on my knees the two feet or so to the old claw foot tub. When I turned and perched on the edge he was rolling the condom on. Walking on his knees, grinning like the Devil, I realised the edge of the tub was the perfect height. He was aligned with me and I was ready – the coolness of the porcelain’s kiss on my ass was rivalled by the extreme heat of him when our bodies met.

‘Put me in you.’

He kissed me and I wrapped my arm around him, following by hooking one leg to his waist to split my body wide. I fumbled for just an instant, the condom slippery and my hands shaky with adrenaline. And then he was poised, barely giving me the head, but on the brink of sliding home.

It was only an inch, but it was a delicious inch and I surged forward to take him into my body.

His eyes – so dark they were luscious – slammed shut and he moaned on the slow lazy thrust that put him deep inside me. Strong hands clutched my ass, even as the cool tub kissed the bottom of my crack.

‘You’re hot and the tub is cool,’ I blabbered.

He smiled, nipping my jaw, my neck and finally my breast. His teeth clamping down on the side swell of my breast as he drove into me. He kept me pinned with his hands and I’d never felt more used and more adored at the same time.

Safe. You feel safe
.

A man hadn’t made me feel safe since my dad.

Part of that was me; part was the men I’d met. None of them lived up to the love of my dad. And I didn’t trust men who weren’t as good as him.

I pushed
that
thought away, too. For all my mouthing off about no commitment and no strings, I was sure as shit complicating my own thoughts when it came to something as simple as getting laid.

Deke had told me he was fine. So it was fine.

I pushed my body forward to take him deeper, driving my clit to the hard bone of pelvis. We gasped in unison and he said, ‘If you do that again –’

I cut him off by doing it again. His fingers dug into me painfully hard and I yanked with my leg and my arms. He was in me, seated deep, and I almost had him trapped. Almost to the point where he couldn’t move. So we both drove our bodies forward in short staccato leaps until we were barely breathing. When his lips mashed down on mine, I pulled his hair, and as he bit my tongue we came.

Together.

It was like the world stopped to breathe in that heartbeat of time, and when everything around us exhaled, we came.

I sobbed into his mouth but he just kept kissing me. Holding me close. Anchoring me. Keeping me safe.

Our lips stayed locked until he grew soft inside of me. When we parted, Deke brushed my wet bangs back. ‘Now about those letters.’

‘And that wine.’

He kissed my nose and smoothed his fingertips over my eyelids until I shivered. He chuckled and helped me stand. ‘And that wine.’

Chapter Eighteen

I was dressed again and he was dressed again, and I smiled at him, a bit sad over the fact that we
were
dressed. I found myself liking Deke in every way imaginable – sense of humour, disposition, appetites, but most of all naked. He was a good man to have bare under you. Or over you.

We sipped a rich Cabernet with oaky hints as we rifled through the stack of letters.

‘The handwriting is abysmal,’ he said.

I snorted, nodding. ‘But I’m not one to point fingers,’ I said. ‘The older I get, the more I use computers, the more my handwriting tanks.’

‘Here we go.’ Deke tipped back on the rear legs of the high stools and I waited for him to tip over and crack his head open. But lean and lanky and somehow defying gravity, he didn’t.

‘Dearest, I look out over the town to you and I weep.’

I blinked. ‘What?’

He shrugged. ‘Hold on.’ Deke cleared his throat, took a sip of wine and continued. ‘To think that we can’t be together. To think that our lips can only meet in the dark of night under a cover of deceit. To think that our bodies can only meld together under a canopy of lies and sadness. I miss you so. I watch the lights of your home and I think of what it would be like if we could be together. If we could announce our love. If we could have both big parties and small, holidays and birthdays, but most of all … never-ending love. Yours,
Mrs
.’

‘Mrs?’ I said. I held my hand out and Deke slid the thin worn paper inside. I read it myself. ‘Mrs … Mrs … M–R–S,’ I said.

‘How many time are you going to say it?’ He grinned.

‘Once more: M–R–S.’ We sat in silence for a moment and I said, ‘What was the tower builder’s name?’

‘Maxwell Shore.’

I looked at him. ‘And this house, was it the original house on this property?’

He nodded. ‘Yeah.’

‘So that barbeque has always been here? Did it serve all the houses ever?’

‘Nah, it was always connected and used only by this house. Which, before you, was Sidney.’

‘Maxwell Shore,’ I repeated.

Deke took a swig of his wine, polished it off and went to refill. ‘Holy fuck!’ he yelled, spilling wine on the counter. ‘Maxwell
Robach
Shore.’

I grinned. ‘M. R. S. Which means, the occupant of this house …’

‘Sidney lived here from the 50s on. They were about the same age, Maxwell and Sid.’

I nodded. ‘Forbidden love. There was no Rapunzel for that tower. Just a lovely old man in a cute little house, in love with another, more eccentric man, and they were young and it was ages ago and people frowned on that kind of love.’

‘Wow,’ Deke said. ‘Sid and Max.’

‘Forbidden love,’ I sighed. ‘Come on,’ I said, holding my hand out.

‘Where are we going?’

‘To pay homage: by climbing that tower and looking down over my enchanted little house.’

* * *

‘We will be
right back
,’ I told Brutus. He looked at me and cocked his head as if to say, yeah, right. ‘Do not eat anything you shouldn’t.’

He blinked.

Hunh. I wondered what would be awry when we returned. We crossed the street quietly, and I felt oddly like a teenager sneaking off to get up to no good on a dark fall night. I shivered with the joy of it and wondered if Stephen or the surly Coop might be watching us scurry to the tower.

Part of me hoped not. Part of me thrilled at the idea.

I’d never been to the tower, so Deke grabbed my hand and yanked me down the narrow walkway between his house and Coop’s. It could only be described as an alleyway and that made me think dirty things. Which made me grin.

‘What are you smiling at, girly?’ he asked me, pressing his mouth to my ear lobe and hugging me tight against the wind.

From Coop’s window came the sounds of The Black Keys’ ‘I wanted love, I needed love …’
.
Even with the double glazed glass window closed it was audible. ‘He must have it cranked up,’ I murmured.

‘The angrier he is, the louder it is,’ Deke said, laughing softly in the dark. ‘He must be really pissed at you.’

I snorted. ‘He’ll have to get in line.’

‘Yeah? Who else is pissed at you?’ He kissed my ear as we started up the slippery, leaf-covered hill to the base of the tower.

I shrugged. ‘I have no idea. No one, I guess. It’s weird but I always
feel
like people are pissed at me. Or annoyed. Or let down.’

‘Ah, you have the unidentifiable guilt. I get that.’

I chuckled and turned on him fast, pressing him to the cool stone of the tower. I kissed him, mashing my pelvis to his pelvis. Feeling the slide and heft of the cock that I’d just had – but wanted again. I felt seventeen instead of twenty-eight.

‘Good to know,’ I said.

‘Come on, Farrell.’ He took my hand and led me through the keyhole door in the structure. ‘You’re no princess. I bet you eat them for breakfast. But this can be your tower.’

‘No princess,’ I repeated, feigning offense. ‘What are you trying to say, Deke?’

It was his turn to pin me to the cool rough stone and kiss me. ‘That you’re more of an Amazonian warrior than a princess. No long elaborate hair and puffy sleeves for you. You’re more daggers, and boots and braids.’

I grabbed his cock and squeezed so that his breath rushed out of him. ‘You’re really getting a handle on me, aren’t you?’

He kissed me on the tip of my nose. ‘Girly, I’ll get anything on you I can. Handle, fingers, cock …’
