Y
ou can easily plan the fun and exciting things you want to experience while you travel or go out with friends, but you can't predict needing to call the police to report a theft or rushing to an emergency room with

Calling for Help in Times of Need
When you're faced with an emergency, the last way you want to spend your time is searching for an oversized Chinese-English dictionary to figure out how to quickly call for help. Try memorizing these phrases before a situation arises:
Jià o jÇngchá!
å«è¦å¯
(jyaow jeeng-chah!) (
Call the police!
)
Jià o jiùhùchÄ!
å«ææ¤è½¦
! (
å«æè·è»
! (jyaow jyo-hoo-chuh!) (
Call an Âambulance!
)
Jiù mìng!
æå½
! (jyo meeng!) (
Help!/Save me!
)
ZháohuÇ lÄ!
çç«å¦
! (jaow-hwaw lah!) (
Fire!
)
ZhuÄ zéi!
æè´¼
(
æè³
!) (jwah dzay!) (
Stop, thief!
)
Be careful when you say the words
jià o
å«
(jyaow) (
to call
) and
jiù
æ
(jyo) (
to save
) in the preceding phrases. You don't want to mistakenly ask someone to save the police when you want him to call the police.
Sometimes you have to ask for someone who speaks English. Here are some phrases you can quickly blurt out during emergencies:
NÇ shuÅ YÄ«ngwén ma?
ä½ è¯´è±æå
? (
ä½ èªªè±æå
?) (nee shwaw eeng-one mah?) (
Do you speak English?
)
WÇ xÅ«yà o yÃge jiÇng YÄ«ngwén de lÇshÄ«.
æéè¦ä¸ä¸ªè®²è±æçå¾å¸
. (
æéè¦ä¸åè¬è±æçå¾å¸«
.) (waw shyew-yaow ee-guh jyahng eeng-one duh lyew-shir.) (
I need a lawyer who speaks English.
)
