Fixation (Magnetic Desires Book 3) (21 page)

Tia stared at Mellie, her little brow creased over pursed lips. "Is daddy going to move in with Uncle Mike, too?"

Lola wandered over to stand beside her sister, giving her a quick hug before answering Tia’s question. "Maybe for a few nights but then we’re going to move in to our own house. How does that sound?"

Mellie gave a slight smile, the first genuine effort at friendliness since we’d met. I took the other stool beside Tia and rested my arm along the back. "Is that okay?"

"What about Uncle Mike? Won’t he get lonely?"

"Uncle Mike will be fine. And besides, he can visit any time."

"Okay."

"Thank you, Mellie." I offered her my hand.

Pulling me in close, she whispered in my ear. "Don’t hurt her again, or I’ll have your balls for a purse."

"Is that your way of calling a truce?"

She shrugged. "You’re family, and for some reason my sister loves you."

"I know how lucky I am."

"Good."

Patting her arm, I moved past to gather Lola. "That was easy."

The side of her mouth quirked up with a twitch. "I believe I remember someone telling me a long time ago they would make me coffee every day."

"I did."

"Well then… you better get to it."

"Only if you kiss me."

"What?"

"Kiss me."

"In front of…"

"Yeah, wifey. No more sneaking around. I’m going to kiss you whenever I damn well want."

I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her onto her tiptoes while I gazed into her eyes. She tilted her head back as I dipped down to meet her. Tia giggled in the background, and I brushed my lips over hers, nibbling at her plump lower lip.

Mike cleared his throat as he entered the kitchen through the back door. "Oh man, about time you two stopped
sneaking
around the house. There is only so much I can handle."

Lola flushed, her cheeks almost scarlet. "I’m so sorry, Mike."

"Don’t worry about it." He started the coffee pot. "Who wants brunch? I think I even have a bottle of champagne around here. We can celebrate."

Mike was already getting ingredients out, and Mellie took Tia to wash up so they could help. Grasping Lola's hand, I pulled her out of the kitchen and into the back yard. "I have something else for you. When I came I didn’t know if you’d want it."

"What’s that?"

I dragged her across the yard to a sleek red sedan.

"Another car? How many do you have?"

"Oh, no, this is yours." I opened the back door while she stood gaping.

"Mine?"

"Yeah, we didn’t get to go that day because Tia fell asleep. So I bought you this, but that’s not what I wanted to give you."

"It isn’t?"

I dragged the reframed photo from the back seat. "This is."

She covered her mouth, tears forming in the corner of her lashes. "It’s the moment."

"The moment you knew you would marry me, no matter how much you fought against it."

"Yes."

Turning it around, I undid the backing. "I wrote this when I had it framed the first time, after you were gone."

She read the words and I watched her gaze move left to right, once, twice, three times.
Love like this will find its way back. Believe in her.

"Guess I forgot until the picture fell the day after I walked away from you, but I won’t forget again. I promise you that." Propping the picture against the side of the car, I pulled her into my arms to layer kisses along her jaw.

She giggled as my lips grazed her throat. "If you keep this up, our daughter will be sleeping over at my sister’s again."

"We’re together now, sweetheart. I’m not hiding how much I love you from anyone. Especially our daughter."

I let her go to put the painting back in the car, and then hand in hand we joined the others to celebrate.

Acknowledgments

It takes a lot to unscramble my brain and write a story readers want to read. I don't do this alone. Thank you to my children who put up with my incessant whining for writing time and actually giving me the space to do it. To my husband for letting me run ideas with him and never getting jealous of the time I spend writing.

Thank you to Sheri William's, Jennifer Stewart, and Katrina Blake for always having time to run ideas and sort out the kinks and kinkiness. You gals are amazeballs.

Thank you to my editor Tami Lund. I love your work and your vision that takes my characters and turn them into something special. And finally you, yes you, the one reading this book. Thank you for picking up one of my books. I do hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it. You are the best!
