SLE can affect many body parts. Symptoms may include weakness, loss of appetite, susceptibility to infection, a red butterfly-shaped rash on the face and sometimes scalp, and joint pains. In severe cases the lungs, kidneys, spleen and brain can be affected.

Those with lupus often have flareups with intermittent periods of remission.

CAUSES

Lupus is a complex condition that may be triggered by chronic stress, drugs, viral infections, environmental pollutants, food intolerances, and extreme fatigue.

Action plan

It would be advisable to consult a medical practitioner for extra guidance. In the meantime, the aims are to reduce inflammation, aid healing, alkalize the body, and support the liver, kidneys, and bowel in their work of detoxification and elimination.

EAT/DRINK

Whole grains and pulses for their B vitamins, magnesium, and fiber for internal cleansing.

Sea vegetables are rich in minerals needed for normal immune function.

Oily fish. These contain anti-inflammatory oils. Try sardines, mackerel, salmon (wild or organic), herring, and trout.

Fruits and vegetables, which are the best source of nutrients needed for proper immune function and pH balance. Eat at least eight portions a day. Try to have a large glass of freshly pressed organic vegetable juice daily as well.

AVOID

Tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, chiles, eggplant, alfalfa, and tobacco because they can aggravate inflammatory conditions.

Alcohol, caffeine, sugar, refined carbohydrates, salt, meat, processed foods, and additives are all inflammatory.

HERBS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Drink dandelion coffee to support the liver and to supply potassium. Potassium helps to alkalize the system.

Take magnesium citrate. Magnesium is needed to alkalize the system and support bone health.

Take fish oil supplements. Fish oils contain beneficial anti-inflammatory fats.

EXTRA TIPS

If your symptoms appeared after you had started a course of medication then talk to your GP about changing what you are taking.
