We lay on the bed together and indulged in long, luxurious kisses. I could feel his cock resting against my thigh, ready whenever I wanted it. “Ashland…” was all I had to say.

He gently spread my legs and entered me. We moved in a slow rhythm, desire mingling with sadness and loss. How far had we come since the days when the passion of the moment was enough? Now we loved one another and those feelings added depth and despair. Only in letting him go did I realize how much I wanted him.

I could feel my orgasm beginning to stir inside me. I gripped Ashland’s wide shoulders, silently urging him to touch that place deep inside me that only he had reached. “Oh god, Ashland,” I moaned.

My orgasm was like a white-hot flash across my brain, briefly erasing any thought of the dawn ahead. And then he came too, pouring himself into me, until all that was left was our labored breathing and our hearts beating wildly.

The taxi would come for Ashland at six o’clock. Elena would be in it, waiting for him. I tried to forget that as we lay there together, neither of us wanting to sleep.

“Nothing’s going to change,” Ashland whispered in my ear as the first birds awoke outside in anticipation of the dawn.

“We don’t know that, Ashland. I don’t want us to make any promises. It would be too sad if we had to break them.”

“I know how I feel about you. I can promise you that nothing is going to change that.”

Without meaning to, I drifted off to sleep in his arms. When I awoke again, the sunrise was bathing the room in golden hues and Ashland was leaning on one elbow, still watching me quietly. “Did you sleep at all?” I asked.

“I’ll sleep on the plane.”

“I can make you some breakfast.”

He shook his head. “Go to the window.”

I slipped out of bed, still naked, and padded across the carpet to the French doors. “Open them,” he said.

I turned the handles and pulled the doors open wide. The morning air was pleasantly cool off the lake. I turned back to Ashland, who was lying on his side in the bed, watching me. I made a step to join him. “No,” he said. “Stay there.”

“Why?”

“I want to take in every detail of you. I want you etched in my memory.”

I stood silently, the new day’s rays turning my skin luminescent. Ashland’s gaze caressed every morsel of my body—my eyes, my throat, my breasts, my arms, my stomach, my vagina, my thighs, my feet. He took his time, as if he was memorizing a sacred text.

The phone rang. He picked it up without taking his eyes off me. “I’ll be down in a few minutes,” he said.

I picked up his bathrobe and pulled it around me as I watched him dress. We spoke little. Finally, when his shoes were on, he took me in his arms for one last kiss.

“I love you,” I said.

“I’ll always love you,” he replied.

We left the bedroom hand in hand. After one last, lingering look, he descended the stairs while I slipped into his office, which overlooked the street.

I watched from the edge of the window. Elena stood by the cab’s open door, looking gorgeous and perfect. Ashland came out the front, carrying just one suitcase because he always traveled light. Elena’s face lit up as he approached. She said something to him, though I couldn’t hear what.

Just before he climbed into the cab, Ashland looked up at my window. I knew what deep emotions lay behind that phlegmatic face. I pressed my palm against the cool glass, wanting to touch him one last time, knowing the final time may have already passed.

He turned and climbed into the cab. I watched it pull away. Its brake lights flashed briefly at the end of the street. It turned the corner and was gone.

I remained at the window, wanting to stay there and grieve. But I knew I couldn’t. There wasn’t time. My family would miss me.
