“I will not shut the fuck up,” I said, chuckling. “Would one million dollars change your life?”
“Shut the fuck up!”
“I thought we covered this.”
She hit me, then—just punched me straight in the arm.
“God
dammit
,” I said, rubbing the spot. “For a little thing, you punch like a motherfucker.”
“I’ll do a lot worse that that if you’re messing with me,” she said, her jaw jutting out menacingly. “Are you kidding around? Fucking with the poor girl??”
“No! Jesus, no, Lilly. I’m dead serious.”
“Then

a million dollars would change my life! What is
wrong
with you? It would change anyone’s life!”
“Not mine,” I said quietly.
She glared at me again, looking at me like I was an alien. I looked back at her the same way.
“Okay, so we’ve agreed that one million is a lot of money for you. Excellent,” I said. “Now, as you may have noticed at lunch, my father expects me to get married… soon.”
“I
did
notice,” Lilly said, smiling now. “And I noticed you had no problem lying your ass off about you and me.”
“Yes, well,” I said. “You also may have noticed that he isn’t exactly taking ‘No’ for an answer on this whole thing. I need someone to pose as my fiancé, at the very least…”
“And at the most?”
“Well,” I said. “Right now, I’m willing to pay you
one million dollars
if you’d be my fake fiancé for as long as it takes to get my father to revoke this fucked up contract of his.”
“Okaaaaay? And if he doesn’t revoke the contract?”
The words were hard to get out. She was still staring at me like I’d lost my goddamn mind, and hell, maybe I had.
“I will pay you an extra million to be the mother of my child.”
There. It was out there now. Everything was laid out on the table. All I had to do now was wait for her reaction.
The silence stretched between us as she looked up at me with those wide, beautiful eyes of hers—looking at me like I was some maniac who’d kidnapped her, instead of a man who needed her help, and was willing to pay for it.

She looked out the window, at the streets and alleyways as we drove on, thinking God-knows-what, and driving me out of my mind. Finally, she looked back at me and cracked an off-kilter grin.
“Damien Black,” she said. “I don’t know what kind of lunatic you are, but for a million dollars, I’m willing to find out.”
I laughed, and reached for her hand. She pulled it back and stuck her finger in the middle of my chest.
“
But
,” she said. “I’m not agreeing to have a baby… Not yet, anyway. That’s just too far.”
“We can start with you being my fiancé,” I said. “I’ll need you to live with me, of course, so we can keep up appearances. Is that a problem for you?”
“Hell, no,” she said.
It was then, leaning in to shake her hand, that I finally placed that alluring scent of hers, the one that had been tickling the back of my mind all day.
Chanel No. 5…
This young lady, stealing wallets just to get by, from the look of her clothes, at least, was wearing Chanel No. 5.
I sat back, smiling to myself over this realization.
She may not have recognized me, and may be one street-smart little thief, but this girl also had a taste for the finer things. This was something I could exploit.
I was going to show this little lady the time of her life, and then, if my father insisted on me having that baby, I was going to show her a lifestyle she couldn’t refuse.
