To Love and Protect (31 page)

“Looks like I’ll have to accept a new job more often,” Matt said appreciatively as she straddled him tight and added one more lingering kiss.

"Know what I think?" she said once she managed to finally pry herself away and catch her breath. "I think you should first accept the position of K-9 instructor, then accept the position of being my significant other."

Matt looked into her eyes and smiled. "Too late. I already accepted that position the first time I saw you in the clinic, doing your damnedest to save Carly’s life.  I just hope you don’t get bored now that things are getting back to normal.”

“I don’t think they ever
were
normal since we’ve met – unless you call gunfire and anonymous threats typical everyday stuff! I think we packed enough craziness into one month to last a lifetime.”

“So you’ll be okay with just the two of us being together and no outside drama?”

Shelley grinned.  “Oh, I think I’ll be able to manage.  Besides, something tells me things are going to be anything but boring.”

Matt squeezed her hand.  “Good.  So let’s go get something to eat – I’m starving.”

“Me, too!”  Shelley paused, her frozen look of surprise melting into a wide smile.  “I can’t remember the last time I said that.”

Matt rolled his eyes for effect.  “Great.  I guess the days of you being a cheap dinner date are officially over.”

Shelley playfully elbowed him in the ribs, then leaned in for one more kiss. Love had found its way to her again … and despite her earlier fear of loss, she now knew in her heart that with Matt by her side, she had everything in the world to gain.
