"Who, Ma'am?" The man continues checking various things.

             
"Landon. Please," I moan out as I feel another contraction approaching. Next thing I know, he's putting in an IV. "I have to stay awake. Please."

             
"This will only relieve pressure and pain. You may seem a little loopy, but you'll be awake," he tells me. I just nod as I feel the effects take over.

I hear a loud crash and  holler Brooklyn’s name just before the line goes dead. I sit there in the library, and everyone is staring at me. My heart is racing. What just happened? I gather my books and throw them into my bag. I grab my phone and dial Preston as I race down the hall.

             
Before he can speak, I start, "Something is wrong. I was talking to her, and then I heard a crash. Then the line was dead." I pant as I run out to my truck.

             
"Mom?" Preston is panting too, and I only assume he's running to his car too.

             
"Yeah, meet me at the hospital unless I call you back otherwise. " I hang up, not waiting on his reply.

             
I drive so fast I don't remember getting there. I run to the reception desk in the ER. My gir--wife was brought in, I think. She's pregnant. I need to see her."

             
“Let me check.” The lady clicks on her computer. "They just brought her in. I'll page the nurse that you arrived."

             
I nod and sit to wait. Preston comes running in a few minutes after me. "How is she?"

             
"I don't know yet. They're g
etting a nurse." We sit and wait. I rake my hands through my hair. "FUCK."

             
"Mr. Baker?" We both jump up.

             
"I told her I was her husband," I tell Preston as we approach the nurse.

             
She looks at us both. "Me," I tell her.

             
"Just in time, we're about to take the baby."              "Good Luck, Dad," Preston tells me. "Take care of my mom."

             
I nod. "Yeah. Call your grandparents and my parents and Lacy." I can feel the blood drain from my face.

             
"I got it. Go," Preston tells me while pulling his phone out. After the nurse and I walk to the back, she hands me some scrubs to change into. "How is she?"

             
"Your wife?" the nurse asks.

             
"Both. But yeah." I tie the hat on.

             
"She’s bruised up, but she should be fine. The baby is fine but seems to be a little stressed so we're going to take her now."

             
"Okay, thanks." She leaves me to change. I feel like a ball of nerves. As soon as I change, I walk down the hall to see my 'wife' and my soon-to-be daughter.

             
I follow the nurse into the operating room, and Brooklyn is just lying there in a gown. She has several bruises on her face and a gash on her head. Her left arm is rolled in a wrap. Everyone is preparing, and there is a curtain pulled at her waist. "Stay up by her head," the nurse tells me.

             
"Hey, baby," I whisper to Brooklyn. She lazily looks over at me.

             
"Hi." She smiles. I kiss her softly.

             
The on-call doctor walks in. "We ready?" he asks everyone in general. Within seconds it get chaotic. After about maybe ten or fifteen minutes, I hear commotion, and I hear a cry. I smile as I realize it's her. My daughter. I lean over to Brooklyn and whisper in her ear.  "She's here. You did so well. I love you."  I kiss her lips again. She just smiles, and a tear falls from her eye. I watch as they move the baby over to a warmer and begin to check everything. She's crying and crying.

             
Next thing I know there's a couple nurses with panicked looks, as the doctor starts spouting off things. All I hear is excessive bleeding. I close my eyes and press my forehead to hers. "Stay with me." I whisper it over and over. Brooklyn smiles and nods before closing her eyes.

             
"Sir, you're going to have to step out for a few minutes," the nurse tells me, and I shake my head in the negative.

             
"She needs me. I can't go." I begin to raise my voice.

             
The doctor looks up and me. "It's fine. I got it." I nod at him as I run my fingers through Brooklyn's hair. It's silky soft, and she continues to just smile.

             
They bring my beautiful daughter to me. We don't even have a name. I tremble as I hold her. “Hey beautiful, you look just like Mommy.” I kiss her forehead. I lower her down so Brooklyn can see her. "Isn't she beautiful?" I say to Brooklyn.

             
"Yeah," Brooklyn whispers.

              Once they have us into a room, and Brooklyn and I have had our time with our new baby, we allow visitors to show. My mom is so eager to see her first grandchild. "What did you decide on for her name?" Mom inquires.

             
I look at Brooklyn, and she smiles, letting me know it's okay to spread the news. "Amelia Grace Thomas," I announce proudly.

             
"That's so beautiful." Mom kisses my forehead before kissing both Brooklyn and Amelia's foreheads also.

             
Preston, Lacy, and both sets of our parents gather to welcome Amelia into the world. She looks just like her mother. Completely beautiful.

             
We get out of the hospital the day after Thanksgiving so everyone decides to postpone it until Saturday. Brooklyn rested all day while my mom and Lacy prepared dinner. The guys watch football, and I jump from the football with them to the other room with Brooklyn, Amelia, and Lacy. Lacy keeps Amelia while Brooklyn takes short naps. Every time I go to check on my girls, they're either sleeping or Brooklyn is nursing.

             
"Dinner's about ready." I give Lacy a go-ahead look and wait for her to leave before turning to Brooklyn. "How are you feeling?"

             
"Sore, but good." I help her up from the bed. I wrap my arms around her.               "A few weeks before any loving?" I nuzzle her neck first, then place small kisses from her neck to her sweet lips.

Epilogue- 6 weeks later-Brooklyn

              Life as a new mom again is exciting, fun, exhausting, all rolled together. Preston is back at school and so is Landon. He is so busy with Law School and interning with his dad, so he struggles to get home early enough to spend time with us. He still jumps from the apartment he shares with Preston a couple nights a week to staying with us at the house. I'm trying to be tolerant of his upcoming career. I know it's important, but I feel we're on the backburner. He makes every effort to spend as much time with Amelia as he can. He's a good dad to her, and she lights up each time he holds her. His mom spends a lot of time here and is a great help when I need something as simple as a shower or the dishes done.

             
Amelia is six weeks old, and I got released last week from the doctor, but Landon's been busy with work and school, and then Christmas was here, so we've had no alone time.  His parents are doing a New Year's Eve party tonight and insist on keeping Amelia afterwards to give me a break for the night.

             
I'm dressing in a long blue strapless dress with a white sweater. Landon is dressed in a pair of slacks with a white button shirt. He's been acting strange all day. He barely looks my way, and when we talk, it's all about what Amelia is doing. I love talking about my daughter, but I need some of us back too. I sometimes wonder if our age will affect us. Does he want to move on? Maybe there's someone else at work or school? I can't help but think these things. I'm a thirty-six-year-old mother of a twenty-one-year-old and a six-week-old. "You ready?" Landon peeks into the bathroom where I've been the last thirty minutes.

             
"Yeah. Amelia still sleeping?" I walk toward him, and he lightly pecks my lips.

             
"She is still asleep, but I managed to strap her into her car seat." He takes my hand and leads me down the stairs.

              The evening is great. Landon has had a few beers and is a nervous wreck. I glance around and no one unusual sticks out to me. His dad had invited the office to the party, and I thought if there was someone from his office that Landon has been secretly seeing, I would notice, but he's only talked to a few other attorneys. Amelia went to sleep about an hour ago and the countdown to midnight has just begun. Landon approaches me and pulls me into his arms. I smile up at him.
