“Fuck it. I'll get the rest later.” As soon as the words came out of
my mouth, his hands gripped my hair and I had only moved a small distance
before his lips completely captured mine.

Neither of us cared that the syrup was still sticking to his chest.
I was practically safe—his shirt was my protection.

I ran my tongue along his top lip, tasting the sweetness instantly.
I was on my back quickly and his hands ran down my sides, lifting my legs to
wrap around his waist. I let out a sigh of relief when I felt his length run
along the center of my panties, and the way he caught my lip between his teeth
caused my hips to roll.

Nothing could ruin the mood that had started now. The heat of it,
the way his lips trailed along my jaw and down my neck, the way our hips were
moving in-sync was mentally unbreakable.

But as soon as his lips sucked on my neck, the unenviable happened.

“Oh, shit.” The weight on top of me disappeared and I watched as
Tristan scrambled around the room to put his jeans on. “I’m late.”

Trying to understand what just happened, I looked over to the clock.
4:17PM. He had to be at the arena in less than an hour.

You're fucking kidding me.

“Booo!” My head fell back against the pillow, my thighs clenching
together to control the heat that had been building rapidly between them. If he
thinks for one second I’m going to give his shirt back, he can think again.

“I'm sorry, baby.” He leaned over me and placed a kiss on my lips.

I kissed him back, but I was still annoyed. “You're seriously going
to leave me like this?”

He arched a brow. “I'm the one with the boner and maple syrup all
over his chest and you're disappointed?”

He had a point. “Suck,” I mumbled. His chest glistened with the
syrup and I tried to quickly come up with something that would persuade him to
maybe... arrive late to his match. Stupid thought, I know.

“I'll see you tonight, okay?” He kissed me again when I nodded, and
slowly walked out of the room with nothing but his slacks on while his
blazer—which I now noticed—was bunched up in front of his erection.

I instantly glared over at the clock for being a cock-block,
planning to throw it out the window when my body cooled down, but I was only distracted
by a folded piece of paper sitting on my dresser. Reaching over, I grabbed the
paper thinking Tristan had left it for me. It actually looked like the object
that he was holding last night when I came back in the room.

I opened it, my brows furrowing as I read each word carefully.

Maya, things are going to start getting
complicated. You need to keep this to yourself but you can't trust everyone.
I'll explain more in due time, but for now you need to keep this to yourself.

I re-read the note over and over again. Eventually, panic came and I
needed to get this thing away. What the hell was any of this supposed to mean?
I can't trust everyone? Who was everyone? They could've been more specific.
More importantly, why the hell was Tristan leaving me this? I wasn't even fully
sure it was Tristan but he was the only one here.

“You know.” I quickly dropped the note to the floor when I heard
Melinda's voice, turning just in time to see her walk in. “I was wondering
where the maple syrup went, but after seeing Tristan run out of here with it
covering his chest, and the lack of his attempt to cover his boner, I kind of
figured where it went.” She arched a perfectly shaped brow. “You do know he's
going to have a great time washing that off?”

I shrugged, not sure if I was supposed to feel bad about that or
satisfied. “I was horny, he was horny, and I had maple syrup.” I reached down
and grabbed the syrup, holding it out for her.

“I'm actually surprised there's still some left,” she said, taking
the bottle. “You're so whipped, Maya.”

“How does that say I'm whipped?”

“It doesn't. You not denying it does.” She flashed a grin and walked
out of my room, fully ignoring the glare that I had.

Shaking my head, I picked the note back up and grabbed the lighter
off my dresser. I watched the note burn in my ashtray, and the whole time I had
the words running through my head over and over again. I also had the thought
of me being whipped lodged in there too.

I didn't deny it.

Fuck.

Twenty-Eight – Still Friends with
Benefits and Complications?

“So, are you guys like in a relationship now, or are you still in
the FWBAC stage?”

Melinda's question took me by surprise and I choked on the smoke
entering my lungs, all while trying to keep myself perched on the boot of my
car. Patting my chest and getting over my coughing fit, I stared ludicrously at
her. “You couldn't ask me that when I wasn't having a smoke?”

“Sorry, next time, I'll just ask him.” She shrugged, placing her
smoke between her lips and inhaling.

I hadn't really thought about it until Melinda asked. What were
Tristan and I now? Were we together? Were we not together? Were we...
together-but-not-together—that's not even a real thing but I was trying to make
it something. “I actually don't know,” I murmured, finally coming to the
conclusion that I didn't even know. “We didn't really discuss it.”

“So you guys just had sex and then he left as soon as he woke?” she
asked.

“We didn't have sex, we...” I paused, not really sure where I was
going with it. Did we make love last night?

“Made love?” she mimicked the words in my head. My silence lasted
all of two seconds before she instantly jumped on it. “Oh my God.” Melinda was
in front of me and her face carried a shocked expression. “He told you he loved
you, didn't he?”

I didn't answer, and it only added to the assumptions in her head.

“And you told him that you loved him too? Oh, Maya, what have you
put yourself in?” She grinned mischievously. “Maya and Tristan sitting in a
tree, s-e-x-ing 'til
quarter past three
—”

“It was kind of... until four...” I muttered without looking at her.

“Wow.” She turned back to lean against the boot again. “I'm actually
kind of jealous.”

“You have no reason to be jealous, Mel,” I said, watching as cars
pulled into the parking lot. We were waiting for Daniel to turn up. He’d told
us that he was going to do something and he'd be back in five minutes but that
was over ten minutes ago. I was starting to think he had done a runner.

“Are you kidding me? Maya, it's rare for our kind to even find love
let alone with someone who actually supported it.”

I couldn't exactly say that Tristan fully supported it, only because
of how he was still closed up about the subject. I had noticed in some of his
reactions that he was still trying to get used to it. And with him trying, it
only made me want to give him more reasons to keep trying. I just didn't know
how long it would take before it became too much.

“It's not as great as you think,” I said, “yeah he seems pretty cool
with it now, but it's only been a day, ya know. There will come a time where he
probably won't stand the look of me and I honestly wouldn't know how to handle
that.”

I could feel Melinda's eyes on me as she thought about how to
answer. She eventually gave up trying to think and nudged her shoulder against
mine. “You never know, Maya. The future holds a lot of unexpected routes. You
just need to wait for the time to come before you can handle it. Everyone
spends their time wondering what's going to happen tomorrow, or the next day,
or even next year, but no one realizes that right now—the present—it needs your
attention more.”

“Wow,” I said, staring at her in a whole new light, “has Daniel
rubbed off on you lately, or have you taken an inspirational class that I
didn't know about?”

“We're all full of wisdom, Maya.” She rolled her eyes. “You just
need to know how to access it.”

“Touché,” I said. I was grateful for her words though. They actually
put a sense of comfort with me. And she was right—again—I needed to focus on
right now. Tristan was with me now. If problems start in the future then I'll
deal with them then.

“Speaking of Daniel…” Melinda looked around the parking area. “If he
doesn't turn up in the next five minutes I'm going to kill him.”

I predicted the future pretty closely earlier. Melinda had a go at
Daniel, he said sorry, she continued yelling, he... kept saying sorry, and then
eventually—after a few pancakes were thrown—she forgave him, only if he
promised to stay the hell away from Sophia or else his balls will be coming
off—her words, not mine.

On the subject of human best friends, I called Jamie today.
Apparently her phone call wasn't a happy one. The guy—who she was supposed to
be going on a date with—stood her up. The way she explained it to me made my
heart ache for her. Her voice was so quiet and half the time she was taking
ragged breaths. I wanted to just go over to that ship and give that guy a piece
of my mind. He didn't realize what he was missing out on.

I couldn't even tell her about Tristan. I wanted to—only because I
knew she would have something to say—but I just couldn't do that to her. It
wasn't the right time.

A familiar low rumble distracted my thoughts and I looked up to see
Noah pulling in, parking his car in the car-park next to mine.

“Maya,” he said as he got out, “just the person I want to see.”

Uh oh, that never ends well.

“So, I go home last night expecting to see my best friend home after
his little short temper.” He walked to stand in front of me. He was amused. I
knew this judging by his attempt at trying to fight a smile. “And what I get
is... well nothing, he doesn't come home until just about a couple of hours
ago, with maple syrup all over his chest.”

Now I could see why he was finding this amusing. “I don't know what
you're talking about, Noah.”

“Funny.” His brown eyes bore into mine. “Because when I asked him
what happened, he said and I quote '
Maya happened'
and hey, I'm not
trying to be a dick, all I'm saying is that it's about time you guys got your
heads out of your asses. It was starting to get annoying hearing him bitch and
moan.”

“What did he moan about?” I asked curiously.

“She's so fucking complicated, man,” he replied in a voice that I
guessed was supposed to be Tristan's. “I don't understand why girls are so
complicating. Fuck, she's stubborn.”

Melinda snorted a laugh, and I knew why. I nodded. “That sounds like
me.”

“That's what I said.” Noah looked down at his watch. “Fuck I knew I
shouldn't have met up with that girl. Ten minutes until his match, you coming?”

“Yeah, we're just waiting for our friend,” Melinda said, just as I
spotted Daniel... and Ethan walking across the road.

“Looks like we were waiting for two friends,” I murmured, hopping
off the boot of my car. “I didn't know Ethan was coming.” I looked to Melinda,
but she wasn't staring at what I was staring at. Instead her eyes were
plastered to her nails, a red tinge crawling on her cheeks. “Are you blushing?
Why are you blushing?”

“No reason,” she replied fast.

“Don't make me ask Daniel,” I warned, “He’ll tell me.” Actually,
after I spilled his secret I'd be lucky if he told me.

“I have a feeling this is a girl conversation.” I had almost
forgotten that Noah was here. “I'll see you guys in there.”

Melinda watched as he walked inside and I knew she was trying to
avoid telling me something. The fact that Daniel and Ethan were almost here
just made me impatient. “Melinda Jane Jacobs, you better tell me or else.”

“You really had to bring my middle name into it?” She cringed then
glared towards me. “I don't go running your middle name out there, Bernadette.”

Now it was my turn to cringe. I hated my middle name, only because
it really didn't go with my personality, and it was my mother's name.
Seriously, it was probably the only thing I got from her.

“Just tell me,” I sighed.

“Okay, but don't laugh—”

“I'm so going to laugh now.”

“Maya!”

“Okay, okay, just hurry.” Daniel and Ethan were entering the parking
lot, and I actually wanted to get inside before Tristan came out.

“I told Ethan...” the rest of her words were mumbled and I kicked
her roughly until she repeated her words. “I told Ethan that we were perfect
for each other. I was drunk, okay!”

I know she told me not to laugh. A good friend wouldn't laugh... “Oh
my God.” I covered my mouth with my hand, trying to stop it from bursting out
with laughter. It wasn't going well.

“Go on, laugh it up,” she said, “You’re going to anyway.”

That was the opening I needed. I laughed. I laughed so hard that I
was starting to see tears in my eyes. “Oh God, that is the best thing I've ever
heard. How did he take it?”

“As every other male does—with a clueless expression.”

No wonder she was so embarrassed about it. She felt rejected. “Aw,
Mel.” I leaned my chin on her shoulder and her own words crawled into my head.
“Your future holds many unexpected routes, babe. Give him some time.”
