Epilogue

“W
ell, well, Pasquale, you did okay,” said a voice from behind me.

“Hey, babe. That’s Il Re to you,” I said, turning to see the angel broad.

“What’d I say about calling me babe?” she asked. I smiled realizing I felt pretty good. For a minute I wished Tess could see me. Of course, she couldn’t, but I knew this was a job she’d be proud I’d done. “Can’t help it, I’m wallowing in victory.”

“Don’t wallow too long.”

“Why not?”

“Because strictly speaking you didn’t do things exactly by the book.”

He raised one eyebrow at her. “You didn’t give me a book. All you said was they had to be married And Il Re delivered.”

“I’ll give you that. I thought we’d talked about you being the king,” she said.

“I just realized that I could still be the king,” I said.

“Oh, yeah?”

“Yeah, the king of hearts.”

She almost smiled. I saw her lips twitched. But she vanished and I was standing alone outside the church where Harris and Sarah were getting married. I was glad they’d made it. Glad I’d done something to make the world a better place.

Merda,
I was sounding like a gavone. But it didn’t bother me. I didn’t have any

to see me any more. Just my conscience to keep me company. And my conscience said being the king of hearts was the right title for me.
